We walk over to a bench near a tree. I sat down as he sat across from me. A small silence clouded us as we sat staring at each other. Clearing his throat he broke the barrier.
"Alyssa?" He said. I smile; I like how he made my name sound. I could definitely get used to that; him saying my name, over and over. I quickly found myself lost in my imagination. Cracking out of my thoughts, I rejoin the conversation that he seemed to have started. Why couldn't he just want to voluntarily say my name over and over again?
"So you're the Alyssa Brookes that I've heard Dylan talk so much about?" He asked as I nod. "So you're the Ash Jones that I've heard all the girls talk about?" He nods sheepishly. After checking the time, he then said, "Well since we've got twenty minutes until class starts, how about we play..." he trailed off thinking of a get-to-know you game.
"Twenty question?", I offered. After a moment Ash nodded his head leaning his arms on the table between us and started. "Question number one: do you like peanut butter sandwiches?" He asked. "Yes. Question two: would you rather have a pet monkey or a snake?" I quickly reply. "Monkey. Question three: what's the most adventurous thing you've ever done?" He asked. "Skinny dipped. Question four: what's your favorite shaped country?" I ask him. "Australia. Question five: if you were trapped in a house that only had bread, jam, pasta sauce and bacon, what would you eat first?" He asked. "Pasta sauce sandwich," I answered laughingly. We continue with more stupid, boring questions and it was time for the last one. "Last one, I said embarrassed, do you believe in love at first sight?" I so felt like laughing putting him on the spot like that.
Dear lord, please let him say yes. Because I know I do. This one took a minute for him to think about, but he didn't take his eyes off of me. "Yeah, I do now," he smiles at me.
Thank you, God.
We sat there for a minute longer until we heard the bell ring. "Can I see your schedule?", he asked. I give him my schedule as I start to stand up. "Wait here a minute," he says. I obey, waiting until he returns. Hoping he does return. Hoping he didn't just ditch me. I know that I would be a little late to my first class, but it was all worth it when he appeared by my side a minute later holding his hand out for me. I gladly took it and we walked into the building.
We walk into the hall, students scattering to class quickly trying to beat the last bell. We walk straight to my home class, the physical contact sizzling my skin as he keeps his hand on the small of my back. The door was still open and the teacher wasn't there yet. I turn to face Ash but found he was closer than before. I panicked. "Bye Ash!", I called as I rushed into class.
How awkward.
