บท 13: The Starry Night

An amazing spread of all the breakfast foods you could want filled the table. Mr. and Mrs. Potter were at the opposite end and there were two seats left. Quinn sat down next to Lily, about to have a conversation when a choking noise sounded from across the table. Quinn looked up to see another boy that sat diagonal from her, coughing.

"Who are you," the boy said staring at her in bewilderment.

"I may ask you the same thing," Quinn said arching an eyebrow.

"I'm sorry, I forgot to mention this is my other son, James." Mrs. Potter said.

"Ah, so there are more of you," Quinn said nodding.

"And you are?" Said James in mock politeness.

"Quinn Eldens, a friend of Lily's."

"Ah, okay that makes way more sense than what I was thinking," James said.

"Why? What were you thinking," Quinn asked, her eyebrows rising.

"Well, I saw you and Al come down together and I thought maybe." He stopped, looking between Quinn and Albus. Albus, Quinn, and Lily burst into laughter, hunching over their plates. The rest of the day sped by, Quinn and Lily talked a lot, and Quinn was able to explore the house and some of its surrounding woods. She even found a secluded clearing in the Potter's garden that would be perfect for reading. Next thing she knew, she was sitting once again at the table, awaiting another delicious meal. She ate quickly, beginning to feel anxious after having spent all day with people. She stood, excused herself from the table and went out into the garden. Albus watched her go, waiting a solid 35 minutes before following.

She sat, her knees supporting her chin as her eyes stared up at the stars, the garden humming around her.

"I wondered where you had run off to." He said, his hands tucked in his jean pockets. She turned to look at him with that scrutinizing look she always wore when deep in thought.

"I had to get away," she said looking up into his eyes.

"I know," Albus said plopping on the grass next to her, turning his gaze upward.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean I know you."

"You do not know me."

"Oh really? You want to bet?"

"I'll take that bet." She said, extending her hand.

"Deal," he said shaking her hand.

"Okay, what do you know about me."

"You are a massive introvert and when around large amounts of people at a time you need to take some breaks where you can just be by yourself."

"Okay, but that's an easy one,"

"You are constantly analyzing everyone and everything around you. When you get nervous you chew on your bottom lip and finally, you know I'm right but you are too stubborn to admit it." Albus said, leaning down toward her with every statement. She scowled, her nose scrunching the way it did when she was frustrated. Albus let out a bark of laughter.

"You are too easy to annoy."

"I am not easy!" Quinn said, pushing him so that his arms barely caught himself. A wide smirk spread across his face.

"Oh shut up you know what I meant!" Quinn said laying down, the frosty grass crunching under her back. A peaceful silence fell between them as they both lay on their backs looking at the stars, a gust of chilly air blowing Quinn's hair softly off her forehead.

"The stars are so beautiful," said Quinn breaking the silence.

"Yeah," Albus said, turning to look at Quinn's profile "gorgeous."

Albus sat up suddenly, taking off his sweatshirt.

"Here, you can use it as a pillow," Albus said, handing Quinn his jacket.

"Thanks," Quinn said, scrunching it under her head.

Albus lay back down, freezing as Quinn's arm brushed against his. He glanced down. Her hand lay on the grass, a mere inch from his. He breathed deeply moving his hand cautiously closer to hers. He sucked in his breath as the sides of their hands touched. Quinn turned her head to look at Albus, her blue eyes glowing in the moonlight. A long moment stretched between them, their eye contact never faltering.

"Quinn," Albus said, hesitating. "I- I think I-"

"Kids, It's freezing, come get some hot chocolate before bed!" Albus' mother shouted, the light from the kitchen pouring onto the grass, making the frost glitter. Albus and Quinn hurried to their feet and rushed into the warm kitchen, both getting a mug of hot chocolate.

She was leaning against the wooden doorway that led into the sitting room, sipping hot chocolate from a steaming mug.

"Hey," Albus said nervously.

"Oh hey," Quinn said, shifting uncomfortably against the doorway.

"You have something in your hair," Albus said approaching her and picking a white berry from her golden waves.

"What is it?" Quinn asked, looking at the small white berry sitting idly in his palm.

"It's a berry from the-" he cleared his throat "from the mistletoe."

"Mistletoe?" Quinn said, looking up at the bundle of leaves and berries that hung above their heads.

"Yeah," he said uncomfortably, but still not backing away.

"You know mistletoe berries are actually poisonous," Quinn said matter-of-factly.

"Really?"

"Yup."

Quinn yawned widely, covering her mouth with her hands.

"Well, I'm off to bed," Quinn said, heading toward the stairs. "Oh wait," Quinn said turning back to face Albus. "Here," Quinn said standing on tip-toe as she placed a swift kiss on his cheek. "So you don't get bad luck," Quinn said smiling, before rushing upstairs. Albus touched the place where she kissed him, smiling widely to himself.
