บท 7: Chapter 7~ Nourishment
Arthur's P.O.V.
As I lay captain Kerigan on the ground with the assistance of Jack, I heard Vel's voice inside my head. "Hey Art. Go back to those three men you just killed. I'm gonna show you what to do to get more powerful" she said. I nodded and proceeded back into the alley.
"Wait! What happened to him?! Did you do this?!" Christopher exclaimed as he walked towards me. I glared back at him and found it quite hard to explain the situation. "Art. This man has always been annoying. How about we kill him?" Vel's voice rang out inside my head. I, of course, ignored it.
"Nonsense, Mr. Morgan is not that kind of man." Kaz said as he helped Jack apply pressure to the captain's wound. Christopher ignored him and turned to Craig; he then exclaimed once again. "Craig. I told you this man is bad news! He must have been thrown overboard because of some crime he commited!" Claive glanced at me then back to Christopher and back at me again.
"Let's not jump to conclusion. Could you tell us what happened back there?" Craig responded in a calm and serious tone.
"Well..." I responded while scratching my head, thinking of an explaination.
Christopher made a clicking voice with his tongue and aggresively grabbed my shirt. "This guy is a Fucki-!"
"Enough!" Captain shouted shortly after barely regaining consciousness. "This.. Man saved... My life.." He added while grunting and gasping for air. Christopher pushed me as he let go of my shirt.
As they all crowded around the captain, I slowly went back to the alley. Surely, the three bodies were still there. However, for some reason, it is only at this moment that it hit me. I realized that this is the first time that I have killed a human. And yet I felt nothing at all.
As I got closer, I noticed something that made me stop. Atop the bodies were dark figures that barely resemble a ball. It floats directly above the bodies and is covered with a fire like aura that slowly moved and change patterns. Each ball has a different hue in them but they are uniform in appearance and shape.
"Those are...In simple terms... Are souls." Vel said. Souls huh. They feel rather cold when I tried to reach for them. However, when I touched it, my hand simply went past through it. It is as if there was nothing there. For the most part, it stayed stationary with small movements from time to time.
"These things are extremely important." Vel mentioned. To my surprise, without my command, my shadow moved on its own and formed a silhouette of a human. However, the only human-like resemblance that it had was a head and the upper torso. Its' build was niether masculine nor feminine. From it's waist down, there was only a tail-like part that progressively got thinner as it approach and connect to my body. It's face does not even have any features except for two blood red eyes. Or atleast I assumed that it was its' eyes. All in all, it only has a blank face, devoid of emotion.
"These things are as important as they are delicious!" Vel said in a excited tone. Then the shadow, which was completely stationary since it materialized, suddenly twitch as its' face ripped open to reaveal its' mouth.
Jagged teeth that were as sharp as knives covered the upper and lower section of the mouth. Inside was an eerie red glow that emminated from its' insides. It opened wide, almost wider than the size of my head. In a snappy and fast motion, it ate one of the ligther toned soul. It easily fit in its' mouth and was gulped down almost instantaneously. While still shocked, I felt a warm feeling within my body. It was strangely satisfying and comforting.
"Ahhhh that was good!" I flinched as the faceless shadow suddenly spoke out of the blue. Wait, this voice...
"Vel?!" I said in a almost shouting tone. The shadow grinned with its' terrifying mouth as it looked back at me. That voice was definitely hers. However, this form is nowhere near the one she had when I saw her the first time. The shadow then turned its' attension to the other two souls. It's arms elongated to reach for the farthest one and snatched it in high speeds. With two souls in hand, It.... No... SHE presented them to me.
"Notice something?" She said as she presented the souls.
"This one has a darker color." I replied as I pointed at the soul from the one that I killed last.
Vel turned her attension back to the souls and said "The corruption in a human's soul can be determined by the color. It goes like this:
- SILVER - The purest of souls. No contamination whatsover. Very rare for humans to have. Souls of angels.
- WHITE - Extremely pure. Also the color that humans are born with.
- BLUE - Minor contamination. This color is ussually the soul color of children.
- YELLOW - Moderate contamination. This is the standard soul color of a normal citizen.
- ORANGE - Highly contaminated. Beings with this soul color are trouble makers, criminals, and murderers.
- RED - Extremely contaminated. The owners of such souls has a special place in hell. Beings with blood red souls are vile, evil and downright beyond saving.
- BLACK - The soul color of demons and devils."
The soul she ate was clearly orange. One of the remaining two souls had the same color while one is darker but not quite red yet.
Vel ate the ligther colored soul and once again I felt that warm feeling.
" Mmm~ Oh! And the darker color they are, the better!" She ate the last one. I am already used to the warm feeling that comes after but this time it was different.
"KUH!" I grunted as I fell on my knees, clutching my chest. It was hot. It was almost unbearable and unbelievably painful. I closed my eyes and crouched in a fetal position because of the pain. After feeling like being burned inside, I felt like something is going to explode inside me.
"AAHHHH!" I shouted as I can no longer deal with the pain. Shadow escaped my body like steam escaping from a pipe.
*pant*

*pant*
"W-Whew...." I was sweating and panting. Shadow was slowly releasing from my body in a smoke like way.
"How does it feel to have your first nourishment?" Vel asked in a playful tone.
"Horrible. I can't wait for the next one." I replied.
"Letting me eat souls with darker colors will make our shadows stronger." She said as her body lost its' uniform shape and slowly crept back into me. She didn't need to tell me. Just looking at my hands, it was easy to tell that I am able to produce more shadow than before. That explosion is a very clear demonstration.
In the distance, I can already hear a commotion . That explosion made quite the noise.
"Wha-! Somebody help! There are unconscious people over here!" A man shoted as he peeked at the alley.
"Hey you! Stay over there!" One exclaimed as he saw me. Ah this may be problematic.
....
Anna P. O. V.
"Officer Anna! Its' your first assignment and you are already causing trouble!" Has chief always been this annoying? Those men that I have arrested are snickering in a corner thinking that they have cornered me.
"With all due respect, they assualted civilians." I replied to the fuming police chief.
"They were on a official business matter!" He replied.
"But they als-" *Slap*
"Do not talk back! Do you know that we almost lost the support of these business partners?!" He shouted. With a sigh he went behind his deck and sat on his chair. "Please understand. Those poor people live off the government and does not even pay tax! They don't deserve our protection. In fact, they are the reason why we have less salary!" he added.
"Yes, I understand."
The chief smiled "You are dismissed."
I closed the door behind me and proceeded to my desk. Not too long after that, the two men I arrested were set free.
"Hey~ What happened to your face?" Gina asked me. A coworker who is three years older than me and has been on the force for a year before me.
"Ah I slipped." I replied. Gina had a frown on her face as a sign of disbelief.
"Oh come on, thats bullshit." she replied.
"Oh yeah?" I replied while looking at the reports passed this morning. One case caught my attension.
"An incident in a harbor at Thames? Three dead. One individual was last seen but not identified. According to the people, It was a male, caucasian, atleast 6 feet in height and blond hair" I read the report outloud and Gina turned her attention towards me.
"Oh that? That report was filled just before you came back." She said as she took a look in the report. "Pretty shocking right? Three men were killed in broad daylight. Well thats not all. Witnesses say that once they tried to engage the man, he simply vanished out of thin air, only leaving a black smoke as he disappeared."
What? Vanished out of thin air? Impossible. "Gina, is this case taken by somebody else?" I asked.
"Hmm, none that I know of. Do you want to? Theres very little information tho." Gina replied.
"Yes. The three men in the picture had the same uniform as the men that I have arrested they may be connected somehow."
"Alrigthy, I will leave it to you. Goodluck!"
