"The Thunder God's Meteorite Sword??" Ye Yan's mouth opened in shock and his eyebrows furrowed together as he heard Ning'Er bring up this weapon. "Girl, are you crazy? That weapon is too dangerous for someone like you to handle. You'll definitely die!"
Ning'Er replied with a firm resolve in her voice. "Founder Ye Yan, you may not know this but Glory City is facing many hidden dangers at this time. The previous eras had far more powerful experts who could defend humanity but right now, there's only one Legend Ranked expert, Lord Ye Mo, and he's not even in the city most of the time!"
He looked at her in concern, "Even if I allowed it, it's not an easy thing to control that sword. Back then, out of the five Legend Ranked demon spiritualists, only one managed to subdue that divine sword. Although the the Thunder God's Meteorite Sword shined at the hands of Sheng Mu, who slaughtered millions of demon beasts, it's a terrifying bloodthirsty sword. He eventually died young because of the drawback of using such a godly artifact!"
"Founder Ye Yan, since I have come here, I naturally have a method to control the bloodthirsty aura and risks of this sword. Please let me have a chance! I will protect Glory City with all my strength if I obtain it!" Ning'Er bowed deeply as she voiced these words.
Ye Yan was impressed with the sincerity and conviction of her words. He reluctantly agreed, "Very well...but first of all, show me your cultivation technique!"
She chanted the Lightning Dragon technique out loud as Ye Yan listened intently. His brows kept on locking, then relaxing, at times looking completely intoxicated. When she finished changing the technique, he let out a huge sigh.
"What an exquisite cultivation technique. If I practiced such a powerful technique from the start, I would have gone even higher than Legend Rank long ago, and reached an unimaginable realm!" Ye Yan said in amazement. The power of this cultivation technique far surpassed his imagination. It was simply the work of god!
With another sigh, he signalled for her to follow him as he led her into the deeper part of the Heavenly Sacred Border. She could sense all sorts of illusions appearing in her head, as though thousands of demon beasts were attacking from all sides but her mind had been tempered by her past experiences and these illusions couldn't affect her at all.
Suddenly, she felt an intense, murderous aura coming from a distance. She knew that this was the aura of the Thunder God's Meteorite Sword and began reinforcing her soul realm with layers of lightning. With these formidable layers of pure soul force, none of the aura was able to reach through to her soul realm but dissipated upon contact with her lightning-based forcefield around her dantian.
The closer she drew to the core of the Heavenly Sacred Border, the more pressure bombarded her and she could hear the screeching sound of wind and lightning as the divine sword resting on an ancient altar appeared in her sight.
A terrifying, murderous aura radiated from the altar.
Every step forward was filled with intense pressure and she stopped to gather her strength and think through her strategy. Nie Li had used the void form of the Shadow Devil demon spirit to pass through the bloodthirsty aura pressuring anyone who dared to walk closely. If she wasn't careful, the pressure would crack through her defences and drive her insane, leaving her a mindless killing machine. If it were an ordinary demon spiritualist, even if they had reached Black Gold Rank, they would go insane from going too close to this terrifying aura.
At the moment when the murderous aura rushed towards Ning'Er, she let out a soft grunt and quickly merged with her Panterran demon spirit. She knew that in order to be a predator considered among the top of the food chain in the St. Ancestral Mountain Range, the Panterran would have some natural defences towards soul attacks, which would be of a similar nature to the aura heading her way. However, as it washed over her, she realised that she had underestimated its effects as she felt a boiling, hot rage rise up within her and she lifted her head to roar in frustration.
After a few moments, she was able to rein in her anger but she knew that she could not take many of these waves before losing her ability to think rationally, and she would not be able to reach the altar, especially if the aura grew thicker as she approached the sword. As she sensed a second wave of murderous aura approaching, she remembered that lightning was the natural nemesis of souls. She didn't have time to reflect on how the Panterran's black lightning would impact the aura but she decided to throw a dense ball of energy from her mouth into the approaching aura.
Using her spiritual perception, she could sense that the sphere of black lightning tore a large hole in the invisible wave approaching her and she leaped through the gap easily with the Panterran's agility. Without any hesitation, she rushed towards the altar where with each wave of aura that approached, she ripped another hole with another energy attack.
Within seconds, she had reached the sword, where at the inner part of the altar, she could sense that the murderous aura from the Thunder God's Meteorite Sword couldn't be felt. With a deep breath of relief, she remembered Nie Li's technique and quickly sat down, crossing her legs. Waves of soul force rushed out from her body, bombarding towards the sword.
BOOM!
An explosive sound came from the sword as tens of millions of demon beast spirits turned into flashes of lightning, and rushed towards Ning'Er. She called out the Panterran spirit to guard by her side with low warning growls, as she prepared her soul realm to receive the incoming demon spirits.
As one of the demon spirits rushed into her soul realm, she activated the technique Nie Li had taught her to suck the demon spirit within and begin absorbing it into her dantian. The demon spirit was crushed into small fragments and the soul force from that demon spirit was completely absorbed by Ning'Er, making it into her own.
The Panterran fiercely guarded outside her soul realm and only allowed one demon spirit to enter at a time so that she could go at her pace to absorb each attacking demon spirit and rob them of their rich soul power. Although she had recently reached 5 Star Gold Rank, she felt her cultivation increasing rapidly again as countless demon spirits were crushed and consumed for her soul's nourishment, again and again.
Seeing this scene, Ye Yan immediately understood that Ning'Er was using the method to subdue the Thunder God's Meteorite Sword. For over two hours, she painstakingly broke down and absorbed the soul power of the murderous, rampaging demon spirits that rushed out of the sword to overwhelm her.
BANG!
She felt an incredible surge in her soul realm as the final barrier of her Gold Rank shattered with a piercing breaking sound in her mind. The soul force churned around her like a whirlpool, pulling all the remaining demon spirits that rushed from the sword into its deadly momentum and causing them to slowly dissipate as the incredible force broke them into tiny, little fragments. Then, just as abruptly, the swirling energy quietened down and there was completely silence all around.
1-Star Black Gold Rank!
Ning'Er opened her eyes in amazement. She had not anticipated that before she had even obtained what she came for, that she would already gain so much benefit. As Ye Yan's eyes opened wide in disbelief, the girl in front of him walked towards the Thunder God's Meteorite Sword, step by step. The sword appeared to try to wriggle in protest in the altar but her overwhelming thunder-like soul force wrapped around the area, and the artifact appeared to calm down in recognition of what was about to happen.
Ning'Er firmly grabbed onto the hilt.
OHMM!!!
A deafening ripple of energy spread out throughout the surrounding area and continued until it went through the whole of Glory City. The sound wave was invisible and ordinary people could not sense it but any experts at Black Gold Rank and above could feel the invisible wave shake their soul perceptions, as though it wanted to penetrate their soul realms.
The various Black Gold Rank experts in the city from the City Lord's Mansion, Divine Family and Sacred Family were all thrown into confusion as they wondered what could have released such frightening power to cause their soul realms to tremble uncontrollable. They all sent out their intelligence networks to gain more information but none of them were able to figure out the reason.
Holding the Thunder God's Meteorite Sword in her hands, Ning'Er trembled as she sensed the deep and boundless power this weapon contained. It was powerful beyond her imagination and worthy of being an ancient divine item!
When she pulled it out of the altar, lightning flashed across the sky and countless thunderbolts from all directions rained down on the sword in her hands without harming her at all. She felt like she could channel all this energy at will if she had enough soul force to give shape to her commands.
As she withdrew her soul force from the weapon, the sharp glow around the sword quickly dimmed down and turned into an old sword with rust stains on it. No one seeing it now would ever think that this rusty sword was the godly artifact that could throw out lightning bolts of incredible power.
At this moment, the Thunder God's Meteorite Sword had acknowledged its new master, and had become Ning'Er's servant.
Ye Yan approached her, unwilling to believe his eyes. "I can't believe you actually did it. In your hands, may this divine weapon once again rise as a protector of Glory City!" His face glowed with excitement before he suddenly looked downcast. "Only...I won't be able to see it come to pass with my own eyes."
"Why is that Founder Ye Yan? Are you unable to leave the Heavenly Sacred Border?" Ning'Er asked pretending to play dumb.
"That's not it. The Thunder God's Meteorite Sword was the artifact that my spirit had compatibility with and formed a weak link to keep me in this world relying on the unique environment of the Heavenly Sacred Border. Now that it has officially recognised a Master, my spirit will naturally dissipate after a few days." He replied.
"What if...I could find a way for you to remain in this world? Would you be open to be able to see the mighty exploits of this sword to fight for humanity?" She revealed her bait to him.
He replied without hesitation, "Of course I'm open! But what kind of method are you talking about? I'm not willing to use some sort of evil technique so that my spirit lives on."
"I am in the possession of inscriptions that can bind a spirit to a divine artifact such as this weapon. And I'm able to do it without wiping away your consciousness, or to put your spirit under the submission of its owner. I can give you full sentience and authority over the sword, as well as who you choose to work with. This way, if you disapprove of my actions, you can always block me from using the sword in future!" She said to him seriously.
He looked at her for a long while, uncertain whether to believe her or not. Everything she told him could be false in order for her to take control of his spirit and turn the weapon into one where she would have absolute control. The inscriptions were only known to her after all, along with the effects.
After what seemed like eternity, he sighed deeply, "With your strength, you shouldn't need to trick me. The weapon is powerful enough by itself without my spirit and you will definitely charge into Legend rank in the near future. I've decided...I want to experience first-hand the adventures of a fourteen year old Black Gold Rank girl!"
"Thank you for your trust in me. I will not let you down!" she exclaimed with joy in her voice. "The perfect place for us to do it is here where we won't be disturbed, with the rich soul energy all around us. Please don't resist when I bind your spirit onto the sword using the inscriptions as the connection!"
She would spend the next three days using her own blood, infused with her Black Gold Rank soul force to painstakingly inscribe the necessary inscriptions onto the blade of the divine sword. This was more complex than anything she had attempted so far in this life, and she wanted to make sure she got it right since it was dealing with the important spirit of Ancestral Founder Ye Yan!
OHMM!!
At the end of three days, another incredible surge of energy rippled through Glory City as the Thunder God's Meteorite Sword became a fully sentient divine artifact!
MadSnail probably has far more epic plans for the Thunder God's Meteorite Sword in terms of the soul hidden within but I'm just making this up as I go along and having fun instead of trying to guess what the original author's direction is!
Ning'Er exited the Heavenly Sacred Border after keeping the rusty sword into her interspatial ring in case anyone recognised what she was bringing out although she suspected no one had gone that deep inside to even catch a glimpse of the altar containing the sword for many decades. Most likely, only the upper echelons of Glory City's most powerful experts would have even known about it, and even so, few would have risked facing the deadly aura that the Thunder God's Meteorite Sword emitted even from a distance.
Ye Sheng walked up to her excitedly, "You've passed the Heavenly Sacred Border test! I was getting worried after you didn't come up for so many days."
She bowed her head to the man in front of her, "Vice Principal Ye Sheng, thank you for giving me the opportunity to take the test. I was fortunate to be able to pass."
He laughed out loud, "Good, good! I like that the younger generation still know how to be humble even in the face of such an achievement! Although it's a formality at this point, we will hold a ceremony soon to award you the recognition of one who has passed since it's so rare for someone to do so. It's time for Glory City to see your potential!"
Ning'Er thought for a moment and decided not to ask him to keep it a secret. She knew that too much attention would draw the focus of the Dark Guild but as she was already at Black Gold Rank, she felt like she was more prepared to put herself on the front line and test the response of her enemies. With her demon spirit, she could at the very least run away and escape from even an early Legend Rank expert unless that expert's demon beast also specialised in speed.
Heading out from the Holy Orchid Institute, she made preparations to visit her grandfather's village. Now that she had sufficient strength, it was finally time to have a few words with a dragon!
…..
By the time she arrived at her grandfather's home, it was almost time for dinner. She had decided to fly over at a leisurely pace to save the time from travelling on the ground by horse. The guards recognised her as the genius of the Winged Dragon Family and promptly let her into the home. She noted far more layers of guard duty after what had happened.
She walked into the dining hall that was dark except for a candle in the middle of the table. "Grandpa Xiao! Why are you sitting in the dark? I've brought your favourite snack from the city."
She heard his hoarse voice, "Ning'Er? It's so good that you visit." He proceeded to light up the lamps around the hall. "Sorry, making the dining hall brightly lit up in the evening always makes me think of the times when your...your grandma...I miss her so much."
She was relieved to see that his face had recovered a lot of its old complexion. "Did you use up all the Azure Water? How are you feeling, grandpa?"
He smiled as he looked at her, "I'm much better because of you. I've used up all the Azure Water and have largely removed most of the poison. However..."
He pulled the neckline of his shirt downwards and showed a black spot around his heart that looked like the size of a thumb print. "The remaining poison has collected around my heart and I'm unable to resolve this final trouble. Don't worry though, my life is no longer at risk just that I can sense that my cultivation will be unable to regain its old strength because it's being held back by the last, stubborn seed of poison. I'm only able to activate strength equal to around early Black Gold Rank right now..."
Ning'Er's eyes glowed with joy. "I'm so thankful that your life is no longer being threatened. I don't know what I'd do if...I lost you too." Her face turned serious. "In fact, the reason I came back here is because it's time to meet this...benefactor of our clan."
His jaw dropped in disbelief, "What do you mean? Ning'Er...you've reached Black Gold Rank?"
"Grandpa, don't look at me like that. I had a fortuitous encounter in the Heavenly Sacred Border and luckily managed to break the final barrier to reach Black Gold." she replied.
He gasped in further surprise, "Now you've even passed the Heavenly Sacred Border test too??!" He sat back in his chair completely dazed, muttering to himself, "What's going on with the younger generation nowadays...are we feeding them something different..."
When he finally managed to calm down, he sat forward again and looked straight at her, "Are you sure you want to take the risk that I took by meeting that dragon? What if you end up injured or poisoned the way I was? If you remember I was already at 5 Star Black Gold Rank when I made the ill-fated choice back then. You've only just broken through. How can I allow you to take a risk like that?"
"Don't worry, grandpa. If you could help to describe your experiences with the dragon, and the test you had to take, it would help me to understand whether I have the capabilities to proceed or not!" she declared confidently.
"The Winged Lightning Dragon is a draconic lineage known for their fighting ability using their unsurpassed speed. The proud dragon will only test for one thing - combat! Fortunately, it will not fight itself because there's no way even a legend ranked demon spiritualist could compete with a true legend ranked dragon! Instead, it has a special ability to send a lightning clone with similar abilities to itself but with a cultivation base at the peak of Black Gold Rank." Grandpa Xiao explained gravely.
A Black Gold Ranked dragon! No wonder so few had been able to pass its test. Even a regular Legend Rank demon spiritualist would find it a challenge to defeat this clone. Ning'Er began to wonder if she could face such an opponent at this point of time.
"Who has passed the test before?" she asked.
"Only the founder of our Winged Dragon Family!" came the immediate response. "You're allowed to use any strategy or tactic you want. The only requirement is that you take the test alone."
Ning'Er thought long and hard about whether to take this risk in front of her. Since her previous life, she had never shrunk away in fear but she also understood the wisdom of strategic retreats and patience. She currently had an ancient divine weapon and Black Gold Ranked armour, and she had confidence in the battle prowess of her Panterran demon spirit. At the same time, she wanted to resolve the last of the stubborn poison in her grandfather's body.
"Grandpa, I'll do it."
…..
She hiked through the mountains behind the village through a path that was specially marked out by the Winged Dragon Family. Only those of this bloodline could activate their unique aura and find glowing runes subtly carved into the rock walls to point the way. The journey took three days before she reached the waterfall which hid the cave entrance behind the sheet of thunderous water that crashed down from two hundred feet above.
If she didn't enter properly, the waterfall would press her down towards the pool below with incredible pressure. Not taking any chances, she transformed into her Panterran form and explored the slippery rocks at the side of the falling water to look for a way through from the side but there was no such luck. She would have to test out the same method as she had used the in the Heavenly Sacred Border.
She first sent out a test blast of black lightning to see its effect on the falling water. The electricity reacted with the water to blast open a small, round gap that merely lasted half a second before closing again. With the Panterran's speed, this was more than sufficient if she timed it just right. She leaped towards the middle of the waterfall, waiting until the last moment to release a fully charged sphere of energy to blast open the sliver of window for the Panterran to glide through, and then landed nimbly on the other side.
As her grandfather had told her, there was a large cave behind that she would have to travel through for half a day downwards before she would meet the benefactor of their clan. She walked through the rocky tunnels into the depth's of the dragon's cave and saw that the texture of the walls was changing to a shiny sheen, as though the walls hid many precious gems.
Finally, she came to an opening leading to a massive cavern. She held her breath as she saw that every pillar, wall, ceiling, stalactite and stalagmite was made of a shimmering, white material. It was completely dazzling and right in the middle of it was a large pool that she could sense was filled with Azure Water! The entire cavern was filled with all sorts of treasure that the dragon had collected over centuries and next to the pond, she could see a massive silver beast lying down, apparently sleeping.
Although it was just resting there with deep breaths shown in the slow rising and lowering of its torso, the aura that a true dragon emitted was even more powerful than the murderous aura she had felt from the Thunder God's Meteorite Sword. The dragon's aura didn't flow over in waves to try to overwhelm her in the same way, but the pressure she felt in her soul from being in the presence of such an ancient, high tier beast almost felt like her heart was being crushed slowly.
As she approached tentatively, trying hard to breathe as quietly as possible, a deep, gravelly voice resounded across the cavern majestically. "Which human dares intrude on my lair? It's been a long time since anyone visited me? I sincerely hope you're from the only bloodline I've approved to approach me. If not, it's been awhile since I've tasted human flesh and I wouldn't mind a snack even though you're just a tiny, little thing that won't fill me up."
Ning'Er knelt deeply on one knee. "Xiao Ning'Er from the Winged Dragon Family pays her respects to the Great Benefactor of our clan!"
The beast lifted its head lazily to look more carefully at her. "Hmmm? You must not be more than fifteen years old. What joke is this that your family is sending me children and weaklings? I'm starting to believe that I made a mistake in giving your ancestor my approval!"
"Great Benefactor, I am deeply sorry that I came while I was still this weak. I came with an urgent need. Forty years ago, a man known as the Silver Flash, came to take your test." she explained.
"Oh? Yes, that was the last time anyone visited me. What a shame, he actually had excellent potential and had reached 5 Star Black Gold Rank. I had placed so much expectation that he would only be the second person to pass my test but then he failed me. What a disappointment! If I recall, he got poisoned by my clone and by now, should have succumbed to it..." The dragon mused, half to himself.
"The Silver Flash is...my grandfather. He has managed to fight on despite the poison destroying his body all these years until today. I'm here to humble request for some Azure Water to bring back to him so that he can live on." Ning'Er's voice could not hide her earnest desperation to help her grandfather.
"Ahhh, the poison back then was to give him motivation to raise another powerful genius from the ranks of your family. Looks like he has once again failed and disappointed me. Instead, he thought that sending his little granddaughter would move my heart?" He burst out into booming laughter that bounced off the walls, hurting her ears as her ear drums vibrated to the thunderous noise. "He must not know much about dragons!"
From her kneeling position, Ning'Er lifted her face and looked straight at the terrifying beast in front of her. "Great Benefactor, I'm not here to move your heart with sentiment."
Her eyes flashed with silver lightning as she took on a resolute expression.
"I'm here to pass your test!"
Three days in a row. I'm on a roll! :)
Enjoy...
