I awoke to bright lights shining done from above. I was laying down on a bed, on closer inspection I realized that I was in a hospital bed. I could now hear the steady beating of my heart monitored by the ECG machine. How did I end up here?
The last thing I remember was...… shit I was at the Lagrange's home. Consuming Nathan's memory, but I passed out. Why? That's never happened before as I can recall. Sometimes the person whose memory in taking would pass out but I've never been rendered unconscious as a result. And for the first time I felt like I was experiencing the events of the memory.
There was a slight tingle at the back of my throat, it felt like I hadn't eaten or drank anything in days. What exactly happened when I blacked out? I tried to sit up but failed terribly. Shit was I paralyzed or something? No I can still feel my lower half; I'm just too cramped to move. I tried swallowing but my throat felt like sandpaper dry and rough.
"Jane?" I heard a voice whisper.
I tried to turn in the direction of the voice but only entered a new world of pain. I gritted my teeth.
"Don't try to move hun, I'll get you some water", the voice which I now recognized as Lydia's said.
A few seconds later a water bottle with a straw enters my peripheral vision. I accepted to the straw greedily as my throat cried out for relief. The cool soothing liquid flowed into my mouth easing my parched throat.
"Boy you must be thirsty you've been in a coma like state for almost a whole week".
Water accidently entered my windpipe when the new piece of information processed in my brain. Lydia patted my back to try and soothe my coughing fit.
"Weee---eeek?" I enquired as I finally found the ability to speak again.
"I'll go get the doctor", Lydia informed me as she exited to room.
A few minutes later tall middle aged man in a lab coat who I assumed to be the doctor entered and introduced himself as Dr. Cordon. He did a few checks and wrote some stuff on his clip broad told me I was only sleeping as my body was extremely tired. Well that's mostly my fault. But the weirdest thing was how he looked at me and when he touched me his hands were shaky and he seemed to be sweating heavily.
"You Ok there Doc you don't look so good?" I asked concerned
He flinched and I could only explain the look he gave me as complete terror. What the hell?
"No not at all I'll be just fine, now get some rest and you can be discharged by the end of the day", he said as he hurried out of the room.
"One sec hun", Lydia said as she followed after him.
What the hell is going on? Lydia soon returned and pulled a chair closer to the bed and sat down facing me.
"What's wrong with that guy?" I asked confused by the events that just took place.
She was quiet for a while.
"After you finished consuming Nathan's memory you blacked out and...." She paused and stared at me for what seemed like an hour.
" Lyd?"
"You changed Jane, well you appearance did", She explained.
My heart beat speed up; my current distress was clearly displayed by the ECG.
"Jane calm down", She said trying to prevent what she probably thought was a heart attack.
If what I feared actually happened after all these years then I may as well have one and die right now.
"Mirror."
"Are you sure?" she asked.
"Mirror", I insisted.
She walked over to the far corner of the room and picked up her bag and pulled out a small compact. She walked over to my bed side and slowly opened the compact. As I feared a face I hadn't seen in 12 years was displayed. My all too familiar blue black Locs rested against my violet skin and crimson red eyes stared back at me.
No , no, no how did this happen after so many years of cloking I've been exposed as the monster I really am.
"Jane" Lydia's concerned voice bought me back out of my daze.
Oh no Lydia, what does she think of me? She must think I'm a monster. I looked away from the mirror as well as from Lydia's eyes. I can't bear to; I can't see that look in her eyes. I don't want to see that look again the look of disgust, not from her.
"Don't look at me, don't come any closer", I whispered on hearing her move closer to me.
"Jane-"
"You think I'm disgusting don't you?!!" I shouted.
She didn't respond which hurt more that if she had said something hurtful.
"Well this is what I look like, this is the real me", I confirmed. "I'll understand if this is the last time I see you".
"Did you damage your brain when you blacked you?"
I looked up at her in confusion.
"Cause you talking a lot of shit right now".
I looked into her amber brown eyes and all I could register was anger and hurt no disgust not even a hint.
"Jane you are my best friend. Why would I give a flying fuck if you look like a hell spawn or not?!! Appearances don't mean shit to me! You've been there for me through the worst kinds of hell and you never even complained. You've supported and cared for me like a sister; you really think I'd throw that all away now?"
She walked over to me eyes glossy from unshed tears. She leaned in and hugged me.
"Now let me take care of you and don't try to push me away ever again or I'll beat your ass back into a coma", She threaten.
"Hell Spawn?" I crackled.
"Heck yea didn't you hear the Doc pissing himself".
And a peaceful silence surrounded us as we embraced.
My apologises for the long wait for this new chapter, been super busy lately had to step back and gather my thoughts for a bit.
