He was going to drop the disguise anyway so preserving his hidden identity didn't help him at all. from the perspective of the main character I think that by killing the fire nation's soldiers he could help the resistance and convince them that he was an infiltrator, that would also help in the long run for when he has to help the avatar defeat the fire lord in the future. For example haru could've vouched for him in the future. Now he has made life harder for himself, not to mention he killed innocent slaves and helped the fire naton keep the outpost. I will keep reading but I hope he will stop killing innocents and destroying the resistance.
