Then it would be better to say that they were smashing particles together. then mana wouldn't work as a molecule or atom, but as a form of radiation or a different kind of particle, allowing for the mutations of the animals. Plus, we are still smashing various particles together to this day, so it wouldn't be wrong to say that it exists, and we just haven't discovered it yet. Either way, it's all fiction, and I just haven't seen an introduction like that and want to read a story that uses it as a part of its intro.
