Why did he drop out? From the debts that he inherited? Okay, but did he even try to stay in school? It seemed to me that he was extremely driven to become a doctor, to prove that he could've cured his father, that the doctor's assigned to his father were incompetent. But now he drops out because of debts? Actually, I don't hate the decision to have the MC drop out, but it can't be because of debts or any external factor. He would have to drop out from a flaw in his character, like for example, when his mother dies something breaks inside him. Maybe after his mother dies he becomes sick looking at anyone that has fallen ill and is only able to think of his father or mother, resulting in him unable to continue his studies as a doctor. There you would have a character flaw that you could build on in the coming chapters. This is a reincarnation story, the basic draw of any of these stories is a simple question "What would I do if I had a second chance?" In my example that would be overcoming his trauma and finally become a doctor. The way things are going it seems it's just going to be "let's get luckier this time". There is my monthly constructive criticism that is waaay too many words, hope it helps author.

Well, ya, his thoughts are absolutely appropriate. The constructive criticism in my comment was about how this information was conveyed poorly and heavy handed, its about the writing, you've completely missed the point. I know I didn't include the comparison with his prior life in my example, but it wouldn't be hard to insert that information into the story organically. You could, for example, make the MC confused at the situation. He doesn't understand why he is able to peacefully eat with his father, but although he is confused he enjoys it regardless. That would convey that he hasn't had such a simple and peaceful interaction with his father in his previous life organically.

Well, my conjecture was under the assumption that the fanfic wasn't a retelling of the original work. Let me rephrase, unless the fanfic is a verbatim rehashing of the original work, then it will inevitably become an AU.

Exactly, you could follow the plot for a bit, but eventually you'll change enough where its effectively an AU, its inevitable.

I would have posted this on Royal Road before here, I don't remember the last time a non reincarnation story was ever in the power top 10. I don't think the audience here is really geared towards this type of stuff. They would probably think that its too slow, or just wont be interested in the first place.
