So all of the kinetic force comes from the magnetic fields repelling effect and considering the smaller mass of the bullet compared to the barrel, the backwards force on the barrel is negligible.

The energy is contained in the magnetic field. Imagine the magnetic field pulling the bullet forward. The bullet is accelerated and only the vibrations from the bullet gliding along the barrel are converted into kinetic force projected on the gun. The rest of the energy goes either into the kinetic energy of the bullet or the magnetic field along the barrel. So Railguns have only minimal recoil. Most of the recoil of normal guns comes from the outward force of the explosion. It is impossible to fully direct an exlosion in one direction. The force takes the path of the least resistance and propels the bullet out. But an explosion is never unidirectional. It always spreads energy in all directions and that is what produces the recoil i think. I may be wrong on this one, since i have never actually studied how a gun works in detail but i think this hypothesis makes sense if only newtons laws are condidered.
