Smoking, even occasionally, is objectively bad for your health and the health of anyone around you. To say otherwise to justify a character doing it isn't accurate. Smoking even occasionally increases your risk of cancer and is bad for all of your organs, even if your kidneys are fine. It also increases the likelihood of increased reliance and addiction. In my personal opinion, smoking is never cool, but of course that is just my personal opinion. I don't expect others to share it. If you think smoking looks cool, then you think it looks cool. Not everyone will have the same reaction to every character, especially as characters are usually flawed in some way (which isn't inherently bad). Characters can also change and grow. That's usually a good thing. Maybe he kicks the habit. Maybe he doesn't. Either way, it's okay for characters to be flawed. Or maybe you don't see it as flawed. This is your character. If you (or he - sometimes characters decide things for authors) decide he smokes, then he smokes. Not everyone will like that, nor will it change the fact that smoking, even occasionally, is bad for your health. You can just like that the character smokes, or even just decide that he does without liking it, and then he does, but please don't try to justify it by claiming it's fine even though it's been medically disproven for decades.
