So he can't just take a sword sized stick and turn it into a steel sword without creating extra mass (or taking it from his surroundings, though again the creation of new mass was explicitly mentioned).

no problem, though I must admit, this Argument only really holds, because the Author both mentions victory through science in his title and tries to explain his abilities using scientific methods. If he had just said "and then the stick was magicked into steel" reasoning with rl logic would have been futile.
