That only applies to a man with nothing to lose and Sakumo has Kakashi. The only reason he followed through with his suicide is for two reasons. 1. He believes Kakashi doesn't need him and will be better off without him. 2. When he asked Kakashi about the situation Kakashi's response was the final nail in the coffin. All the MC needed to do was either use a shadow clone and reveal some future knowledge of Kakashi and include some extreme things that could have happened. Ex. Danzo could have abducted Kakashi into root and turned him into an emotionless slave. Kakashi could realize the truth and develop hatred for the village (Hiruzen and Danzo) and defect.
