"It's alright," Ricky Lewis said indifferently, "it's something that happened more than twenty years ago. I was truly sad for a while after my mother died, but it's all in the past now."

"..." Jaylene fell silent, unsure of what to say next.

After dinner, back in the car, Ricky asked, "Do you want me to take you to your company to get your car, or directly to your home?"

However, Jaylene could not switch on her mobile phone, and frowned saying, "I don't know if it's out of power or broken. I didn't charge it at Mum's house yesterday, and I didn't charge it the day before when I went shopping with a friend. Today, I guess the battery must be drained."

"Here, call your parents first." Ricky handed her his own phone.

Jaylene nodded, immediately dialling her home number. Nancy Scott answered after only two rings with a 'hello'.

"Mum, it's me, I was out for work today and my phone ran out of power, so I borrowed a colleague's phone to call you. Have you and Dad already had dinner?"
