At the borders of the two zones was a campfire with four teams present. The first that caught Lucius's eye was a member of the Haiti team, Jean-Louis Desrosiers. He stood at an average height for a fifteen-year-old, but his presence was anything but ordinary. His skin color was a rich mahogany, and his eyes were deep and dark. His hair was styled in short, tight curls adorned with small, colorful beads.
What was most interesting about him was the series of talismans and charms hung around his neck, each representing a different loa, or spirit, from the Vodou pantheon.
Beside him was Solène Toussaint, also fifteen. She was tall and slender, with skin the color of caramel and bright, expressive eyes that seemed to sparkle with an inner light. Her long, dark hair cascaded in loose waves down her back, adorned with flowers and colorful ribbons.
