Capítulo 13: Agree or don't (12)

Grace

Yesterday's events had left me wondering if that was real or not. Probably not. I hope not, but I know that was real. Although it still felt surreal. Everything that happened yesterday was real. Jake coming as my customer, his weird deal and a whole damn ride with him, was real. God is unnecessarily rude to me.

And I still have to answer him about the deal.

As I wandered through college corridors, I tried to remember why I was here. I was unconsciously aware of every person's presence. Students were piled up in groups to hang around. Some were going in a hurry for their work except for me. I attended my classes without taking notes or even paying attention to what was being said. Angela was on a leave for her personal matters. I didn't even bother to ask her about the matters, because I was so lost in my own problems. I know I'm a bad example of a friend. But it really doesn't matter because I am …

I lost my balance and hunched forward as my eyes went wide, fearing the fall I was going to take, when out of nowhere a strong and a big hand wrapped around my arm, pulling me up and steadying me. I moved my eyes up to find a smirking Jake. I looked down and realized he had his one-foot out.

This fucker tried to trip me on purpose.

I snatched my arm away from his grip and glared at him.

“What the fuck?” I barked these words at him, angrily. He leaned closer to me, still smirking. “How about a 'thank you'. I saved you from falling.” He said. My hands twitched to slap him. I crossed my hands on my chest and replied “You were the one who tripped me in the first place.” He moved back and studied my face.

“You were lost in thoughts.” He said, it like it explained the reason for tripping me. Or maybe it was his pathetic way to change the topic.

“Is that why you decided to trip me?” I asked him instead of answering his question. I was fuming from inside.

“What were you thinking?” He asked, completely ignoring my question.

“None of your business.” I snapped. I looked around his sides and confirmed he did not have any of his friends with him.

“I thought you didn't want anyone to know about our relationship.” I whisper yelled at him. To which he simply replied with “I don't.” After that he continued studying me.

His words and actions contradicted on every level. If he didn't want anyone to know about our relationship then why did he keep on bullying me in front of everyone?

“Does it mean that you decided to agree with my deal?” He asked me in a grave voice. This caught me off guard and I struggled to find words.

“I… I… I'm…” I stammered but nothing came out. I came to a halt when his friends appeared at his sides. I glanced at both Ethan and Mason who came to either side of Jake and leaned against the wall beside him. They turned to look at me.

Mason let out a low whistle and said “Ohoo… What did we get here? Grace… Are you here to grace us with your presence?” With that he chuckled and Jake gave me a one sided lip smile. I wanted to roll my eyes but instead I gave him one of my bored looks, clearly showing that his lame joke didn't hit its mark.

“What are you doing here, Grace?” Ethan asked in a calming tone. This guy looked sincerest and mature guy in this group. He's the only one who looked good enough to talk. The rest are like the high school bully who will beat someone just for fun. Which was true in this case. They were bullies.

I gave Ethan one of my genuine smiles.

“Nothing, really.” I said as I saw the time in my wristwatch. “I have to attend a lecture. So I'll get going.” I told them, moving towards my next lecture room.

“What? Why…? No, don't go. Please… come back.” I heard Mason say, but I was already on my way. I heard them snicker behind my back.

I reached the classroom and entered. I was early so not a lot of students were present. I walked up to a seat in the middle and sat down. I opened my bag and took out a notebook, looking at my previous notes. I heard a gasp and a sigh. From my peripheral vision I saw three figures entering the room. I glanced upwards and my heart thumped in my chest as I saw my three bullies entering the class. My mouth gaped open when I saw them taking seats behind my back, in a row.

What in the ever devil hell.

It's not their class. I never even saw them before in this class.

I turned away from them and looked ahead. It can't be happening. I tried to relax myself and picked a highlighter to highlight main points in my notebook. I started working on my notebook. After only five minutes, I saw a glimpse of someone. I was so immersed in my work that I didn't see that 'someone' was coming my way. I looked up and saw a blonde girl standing in front of me. And she was smiling, sweetly. Sickening sweetly.

“I saw you with Jake today and was wondering what are you both?” My heartbeat escalated but I kept my calm. “Nothing. He was just asking me for an extra pen.” I replied with a lie, praying it will shut her up and make her go away. “Oh… okay. What does your father do?” She asked, making me swallow hard. I closed my eyes and opened them. I didn't want to talk about my father. Especially not his work. How can I tell them I'm an orphan and I'm on a scholarship to study?

“Um mm why are you asking that?” I asked her. Trying and failing to change the topic. She sat on the upper part of my desk where my notebook sat. She picked it up and flipped the pages rapidly from one side then gave it back to me.

“Answer me.” She hissed the words at me with a hardening jaw and clenched teeth. It wasn't a good sign. I glanced at the door, hoping the professor would come early. I didn't realize that the whole class had gone silent and was paying attention to our drama. I hated this attention. A bile rose in my stomach and I gulped it down. I nervously tucked a strand of hair behind my ear and looked at her. “Answer me.” She said angrily but this time she pushed my shoulder back harshly.

“Don't touch her, Monika.”

Jake's cold and deadly voice boomed across the room. It cut through any murmurs that were happening across the room.

The King had spoken.

I had never heard his voice like this. There was murder in his voice. His deep, dark, cold voice sent shivers down my spine. The girl, Monika visibly shivered in fear and I saw her swallowing hard. Whole class became tense at the thought of what might come next. Monika nervously smiled behind my back, to Jake I guess, and walked back to her seat. After she sat, the professor entered the classroom and noticed the tension in the air because he didn't greet the class as usual but looked around. His eyes stopped on someone behind me, supposedly at Jake, and he shook his head knowingly. Maybe he had seen this before. He turned and started teaching. My phone vibrated with a message. I looked down to see it was from an unknown person.

Meet me at the 'Red zone'.

7:00 pm.

Jake

I closed my phone and glanced behind me. Jake was staring at me.

I spent all the lectures thinking about what's going to happen. My thoughts keep swirling around the word 'Red zone' word. At seven pm I reached the place. Nobody was there. I was to turn and leave when Jake appeared from behind me.

“Do you accept the deal or not?” He asked. I took a deep breath and let out the words.

“I do.”
