There was a specific reason Jack went into the kitchen instead of following Radin and Edwin upstairs. With this chance encounter, he would be able to talk to the little girl and gain an understanding of who they were. 

By now, the initial shock had passed. Even though all of a sudden it became a bizarre world that he had to live in, he was sure that the basic fundamentals would remain the same. Power and wealth were two factors that influenced everyone to follow the Jungle rules due to their desire to rise to the top. Jack needed to review every aspect of the situation in order to decide what he should do next. The crucial step that he needed to take in order to secure his future lay in whether he wanted to stay near Edwin and his group or separate himself from them.

 He was a person with a great deal of ambition in his heart, who yearned to be successful in life.
