Capítulo 18: Smuggling Ring

The rest of the month of February passed in a blur of routine and predictability. Each day seemed to blend into the next, marked by the same sequence of events that had become almost second nature. For the first time since I started my job, things felt monotonous and uneventful.

Our shifts began with the usual roll call in the briefing room. Sergeant Grey would go over the day's assignments, give updates on ongoing cases, and remind us of any new policies or procedures.

Patrolling the streets became a series of repetitive tasks. We responded to the usual calls: minor traffic accidents, noise complaints, and the occasional shoplifting incident. These were the bread and butter of our daily grind, requiring more patience and diplomacy than adrenaline and action. Each call was handled with the same methodical approach, ensuring we followed protocol and maintained order.

Our lunch breaks were often the highlight of the day. John, Lucy, and I would meet at our favourite food truck to catch up and share stories.

During the evening patrols, the city seemed to move at a slower pace. We would drive through the neighbourhoods, observing the quiet streets and ensuring everything was in order. The radio chatter was often minimal, with only the occasional update or dispatch interrupting the silence. Angela and I would talk about our future aspirations, sharing future plans, etc.

At the end of each shift, we would return to the station, complete our paperwork, and debrief with Sergeant Grey. He would review our reports, offer feedback, and sometimes share a few words of wisdom.

As the month drew to a close, I realized that the quiet, uneventful days were also an integral part of the job.

The only interesting case we encountered during this time was the case of of stolen medical equipment. This case was as follows.

One morning, Angela and I responded to a call about a possible assault in an apartment building. As we reached the reported floor of the apartment, we heard screams coming from one of the rooms. I kicked down the door, expecting to confront a violent situation. Instead, we were greeted by the bizarre sight of a man shocking himself with a defibrillator.

"What the hell are you doing?" Angela shouted, her eyes wide.

The man, sweating profusely and breathing heavily, looked up at us with a wild grin. "Just trying to get an adrenaline rush," he panted.

I was ready to handcuff him on the spot for reckless endangerment and possession of stolen medical equipment, but Angela held up her hand, stopping me.

"Wait a minute," she said, turning to the man. "Where did you get that defibrillator? It's obviously stolen from a hospital."

The man's eyes darted around nervously, and he swallowed hard. Angela saw the opportunity and pressed on, her voice firm but calm. "Look, we can make a deal. Tell us who provided you with this equipment, and we might be able to cut you some slack."

He hesitated, clearly weighing his options, before finally blurting out a name, "It was Eddie."

Angela nodded, satisfied. "Alright, we'll need you to come with us for now."

We took him to the station for further questioning.

Then, we tracked Eddie and arrested him without incident. We took him to the station and secured him in the interrogation room. Angela and I sat across from him.

Angela leaned forward, and says, "Eddie, we caught you with $20,000 worth of stolen medical equipment. That makes this a major felony, and you're looking at serious jail time. But we can cut a deal if you provide us with a list of your higher-ups."

His eyes darted around, clearly calculating his options. After a moment, he nodded, agreeing to the deal.

Sensing the urgency of the moment, I felt a knot of unease tightening in my gut. I couldn't let this proceed without ensuring we were on solid ground. I interrupted, "Officer Lopez, can we talk outside for a minute?"

Angela shot me a look but stood up and followed me out of the interrogation room. As soon as the door closed behind us, she turned to me, her voice sharp with frustration. "What the hell, Alex? I was about to cut a deal that could take down the leader of this whole smuggling ring."

I took a deep breath, choosing my words carefully. "Angela, we don't have any intel confirming there's someone above him. It's possible he's the head of this ring. If we make a deal based on this little information, we could end up letting a dangerous man go free. We need to talk to Sergeant Grey and get support from Major Crimes before moving forward."

Angela's eyes narrowed as she considered my words. After a moment, she sighed, the tension in her shoulders easing slightly. "Okay, you're right. I was too hasty just now. Looks like the pressure of becoming a detective got to me. We'll do it your way. I'll report to Sergeant Grey. In the meantime, you go through his cell records. We'll try to find his accomplices using his call history."

I nodded, feeling a sense of relief as we headed back to our respective tasks. While Angela went to brief Sergeant Grey, I settled in front of a computer, pulling up Eddie's cell phone records.

As I sifted through the data, patterns began to emerge. Certain numbers appeared repeatedly, suggesting frequent communication. I cross-referenced these with known associates and flagged any unfamiliar numbers for further investigation.

An hour later, Angela returned, her expression more focused. "Major Crimes is on board, and we've got their support. They are investigating on their end. What have you found?"

I pointed to the screen, highlighting the key contacts. "These are the numbers Eddie has been in touch with the most. Some match known associates, but a few are new. We need to dig deeper into those."

Angela nodded, her earlier frustration replaced with determination. "Good work, Alex. Let's see if we can trace the owner of these phone numbers."

We spent the next few hours arresting a total of five new suspects, each tied to the smuggling ring Eddie was involved in. With the evidence we found and the data provided by the Major Crimes Unit, we learned that there was indeed a leader of the smuggling ring we hadn't yet caught.

This revelation set the stage for our next critical task: interrogating each suspect thoroughly. Each interview was a test of patience and skill, as we sifted through their lies and half-truths. Finally, after another two hours, one of the more cooperative criminals provided us with a location—a warehouse that was allegedly the hub of their operations. We quickly confirmed the information to be true through cross-referencing and surveillance.

During these interrogations, we also learned that Eddie was considered the leader's most loyal man. It became clear that Eddie would never betray his boss, which made the information we had extracted from the other suspects all the more valuable. We had narrowly avoided a potentially disastrous mistake by not prematurely making a deal with Eddie, and now we were on the right path to dismantling the entire smuggling ring.

Armed with this critical information, Angela and I immediately reported to Sergeant Grey. We presented the details we had gathered. Sergeant Grey, understanding the gravity of the situation, wasted no time in mobilizing the necessary forces. He arranged for a SWAT team and additional police officers to join the operation.

As night fell, the team assembled, and the atmosphere was thick with anticipation. The warehouse, now confirmed as the centre of the smuggling operation, was our primary target. We geared up, checking our equipment and mentally preparing for the raid ahead.

As we arrived and positioned ourselves strategically around the building, the SWAT team took the lead. With a signal from the team leader, we breached the warehouse, moving in with precision and force. The element of surprise was on our side, and within moments, we had the upper hand.

Inside, the scene was chaotic. Stacks of stolen medical equipment were scattered around, and several suspects attempted to flee or resist arrest. However, the combined efforts of the SWAT team and police officers ensured that no one escaped. Amid the turmoil, we spotted the leader—a man who had eluded justice for far too long. He was cornered and, realizing the futility of resistance, surrendered.

With the leader in custody, we secured the warehouse, taking inventory of the evidence and ensuring all suspects were accounted for. We had successfully dismantled a major smuggling ring, preventing further illegal activities and ensuring that stolen medical equipment would no longer be trafficked.

By the end of shift, we were called into the captain's office. Angela and I exchanged glances as we walked down the hallway, a mix of anticipation.

We entered the office and stood at attention. Captain Anderson looked up from her desk, her expression stern but appreciative. "Hunter, Lopez, take a seat," she said, motioning to the chairs in front of her desk. We sat down, waiting for her to speak.

She began, "I've reviewed the reports on the smuggling ring operation. The work you two did was exceptional. Thanks to you, we've dismantled a major criminal operation and prevented future crimes involving stolen medical equipment."

"Keep up the good work," Captain Anderson said, standing up and extending her hand. Angela and I stood as well, shaking her hand in turn.

As we left the office, I glanced at Angela. "Feels good, doesn't it?" I asked.

She smiled, a rare moment of softness in her usually composed demeanour. "Yeah, it does."
