Seeing The notifications, Luke was slightly disheartened, since he could not investigate at this very second due to injuries. The more time passed, the harder it would be to conduct investigation quests such as these, since evidence and clues would vanish, both intentionally and unintentionally with time.
It was at times like these where one truly missed not being able to pop a recovery potion, or simply killing yourself and reviving using one of the 3 revival slots per day, to get run of the ailment status.
However, he could not do that, and instead decided to learn some things from Harlem, Gard and occasionally Jacob.
…
Time flew and a week had finally passed. Luke had almost completely recovered, and was seated in the carriage rented by Jacob to take himself, Luke, Gard and Harlem to the slave market. Although guns existed, technology wasn't as modern as Earth was even back in 2020. Here, guns were rather crude and the most widely used ones were revolvers and hunting rifles. Pistols and other guns with blowback or recoil operation had not been invented yet. Carriages were the main method of transportation, with the existence of long distance travel using steam locomotives and steam powered sail-boats. There are also many other ways of transportation, including teleportation, rune-engraved transportation devices similar to hovering cars, and other inventions that would be created by players.
The new batch of slaves had already arrived and had been tutored by the exhilarated Gard and Harlem about how things worked.
Looking at his status, Luke was satisfied. He has spent a long time gaining knowledge from the three people he could call friends, the plump, black haired Gard, The chestnut hair, blue eyes Harlem, and the black hair, grey eyed Jacob.
The only way to learn skill for players was to complete quests, and receive them as rewards. These quests could be easy, like fetching a loaf of bread to get the cooking skill, or incredibly difficult like completing a 30 series chained mission, and defeating a mini boss to gain the beginner hand-to-hand combat skill.
However, for him, just listening to people explaining, and himself understanding the process was enough to gain the skills. However, some skills, like the luck enhancement skill that Gard innately possessed could not be taught, since he did not know it himself.
Luke had also used this week to go through everyone's status by using the most beloved skill by all players, [Inspection]. Although a player, NPC, or other creature with more than 10 levels higher than you would notice the activation of your skill, it a godsent gift for battles.
Anyway, Luke could not spend time grinding away at most of the skills since he was unable to more a lot. However, he had been able to grind sewing, cooking and meditation; a core skill for the magician pathway. Leveling up skills wasn't an issue, once a skill reached level 5, they would stop leveling up. One needed the corresponding knowledge to level them up, along with a skill point to allow the skill to Tier up. A similar system is used for talents as well.

Upon arriving at the Slave market, Gard, Harlem and Luke were made to wait in the slave room, while their owner, Jacob went to discuss some matters and sign the legal documents.
In this world, becoming a slave was incredibly easy. Just surrender to a bunch of bandits, and like clockwork, you would arrive at a local illegal slave market.
However, to gain back your freedom, you have to not only remove your magic slave mark, but also create a new identity, which would cost a few bronze.
While waiting, Harlem could not help but strike up a conversation with one of the slave girls next to her, who wore a blank look, as if she had given up on life.
Luke inched closer to hear their conversation from a distance away. He could not hear everything, but was able to make sense from the little he heard.
"Father… died…overdose. Mother… killed…two-headed bird!"
Upon hearing the last statement, Luke's expression lit up before he realized how insensitive he was being. This was no longer a game, but real life. He couldn't just log off from the game and prevent any backlash from affecting him. He was actually stuck in this world until he found a way out.
A notification came up in Luke's eyes.
