Ash had never seen an Elf before. In the span of two days now he had seen two races he had never seen before. Although the elms were the more exotic and weirder ones. The elves held their mysteries. He had heard how rare it was for elves to come into human cities, they were very territorial and had a very high superiority complex. Even though humans and elves were almost the same in numbers, and among the most abundant four species on the continent, you could spend your whole life without ever seeing one.
Even though they were much closer in appearance to a human, but there were still some differences. The first thing he noticed was the way they held their bodies, their limbs were much leaner and their muscles seemed to be placed a little differently than humans resulting in the effect that it looked like gravity had a slightly different effect on them, it seemed to pull them down slightly less, as they seemed to be moving much gracefully. Humans could look like them he thought, some of them had the same features, except the ears. The male elf was a bit wider in shoulders and had less grace, or the female was just too beautiful. Melissa seemed like a child in comparison to her. She was wearing elven clothes, they were very fitting and seemed to wrap around her curves like a second skin, displaying her shape with enticing clarity. He had never had a stronger reaction to seeing a woman before.
Then a bell rang somewhere below and the fight in the ground broke up, the young men bowed to each other and the group started moving out of the ground. Ash left the room quickly to go to the mess, where he might get a chance to see the elf.
The obvious question in his mind was what are elves doing here? From his previous conversation and incident with Derek of meeting elms, he had concluded that Derek's job had something to do with other kingdoms. Maybe he was a diplomat who managed human relations with other forces.
He reached the building that Derek had pointed to just as as the group had started entering. The elves were coming up behind them. He slowed down and waited for them to enter. He saw Ron coming around the building as he was about to enter. Ron bowed slightly at seeing him unsure of what his status was.
"Hi, I am Ash" Ash introduced himself.
"Oh, hi, I am Ron" he replied.
"Have you been here long?" he asked.
"What do you mean? I was born here" said Ron.
"Oh, sorry, I am new here so I don't know much about the place," said Ash.
"If you don't mind me asking, how do you know Sir Derek?" asked Ron.
"I am his apprentice, I don't know for sure what I'll be doing, he was recruiting near my hometown and well he just picked me and now I am here, he hasn't told me much," said Ash.
"Wow, Sir Derek's apprentice, he has never taken one before, I mean he sometimes trains others but not a proper apprentice, you must be good," said Ron.
"Not really, I am just 18, there is nothing I am particularly good at, I saw them fight in the ground just now, I am nowhere that good," said Ash.
"Well those were noble kids, with magical artifacts, and special trainers all their lives, Sir Derek was a common man like us so he didn't like them much either, but what Sir Derek do, not always requires a sword," said Ron.
"So do you know, what I'll be doing?" asked Ash.
"Well, I don't exactly know what he does, but he travels often, even to the elven cities, and the elves only talk to him with respect and no one else," said Ron.
"Why are those elves here?" asked Ash.
"Oh they come from time to time to talk to Sir Derek, usually it's just the guy, but this time he brought along someone with him, umm, I should go now, I have some work to finish, see you later," said Ron and ran off.
Ash left to his thoughts and entered the mess, inside there were several wooden tables placed in rows where people were eating, on a table in the right corner he saw Derek sitting facing the door. He spotted Ash at the door and waved him over.
Ash rushed over to the table only to stop in his tracks as the two elves were also sitting at his table across him.
Derek motioned him to come across and sit on his left. Ash moved around the table, trying not to make eye contact, he sat down and then looked up slowly. His heart stopped once more as he found himself staring right into two gorgeous eyes, and this time they were staring back.
"Who is he?" the other elf asked.
"Ash Blake, my apprentice," said Derek eating his food and not looking up.
The elf had some displeasure when Ash had sat down but now he was looking at him with curiosity.
"Well met, Ash Blake, I am Aria Silv, and this is Roren Dior," said Aria in a pleased voice.
"Nice to meet you," said Ash flustered, he would have made a fool of himself, if Fiona hadn't drilled him on how to calm his nerves.
"So, Mr. Derek, what have you thought about our request? " asked Roren.
"Like I said, I have to go somewhere else next week, so you'll have to wait," said Derek.
"You just need to come to our court and listen to what the elders have to say, and take it to your king," said Roren.
"If it's just a message, why not just send a letter," said Derek.
"Mr. Derek, you have known us for so long, yet you still don't know, we don't waste our time talking about meaningless things, what the elders have to say is of real importance and they wish that you must recite it to the king yourself," said Roren.
"Well then, I apologize but you'll have to wait, I have already agreed to my presence elsewhere, I can't break my word, I am sure you must understand," said Derek.
"I know, you are a busy man, that's why I brought Aria along to show you the weight of the matter," said Roren.
"It was a real pleasure meeting you princess, the last time I saw you you were a little kid, your mother must be proud of you," said Derek.
"Thank you very much, Mr. Derek, I remember the day a little, it was my first time seeing a human, you have done a lot for improving elven-human relations," said Aria.
Ash however was stuck on the mention of princess, they should be clearer, she couldn't be the princess of the Elven kingdom, otherwise, there would have been more guards and things around her and maybe things worked differently there.
"If you are adamant about not coming with us, then I must send a letter back about this to the council, they will have to think of another way to reach the king's ears," said Roren and left the table.
"I heard you were at the grounds watching the cadets train," said Derek to Aria.
"Yes, Roren wanted to show me, I must say our fighting styles are very different," said Aria.
"I don't think so," said Derek,
"Pardon, I mean even an amateur can take one look and tell the difference, even the shape of our weapons are different," said Aria, and Derek shrugged and went back to eating. Aria looked a little insulted and looked at Ash in response.
"I have never seen an elf fight before, so I don't know," he said.
"Well, I am done, it was nice meeting you Aria, you can stay here as long as you like, Ash finish eating and meet me in my office," said Derek and left.
"How long have you known, Mr. Derek?" asked Aria to Ash.
"Not long, I became his apprentice very recently," he said.
"In our culture, you have to pursue a teacher for years to become their students and receive their knowledge," she said. Ash nodded, these elves certainly liked to talk about themselves.
Ash picked a plate from the table and started to eat.
"Even your food looks so barbaric," said Aria looking at the dishes in front of her, she took her time choosing what she was going to try.
"I heard that elves used bows more than swords is that true?" he asked.
"We are proficient in a lot of weapons, yes bows are one of them, but almost every elf also knows how to use a sword, you can't just keep on fighting with arrows in a long battle," said Aria.
