Derek woke up next morning unusually late. It was still fine by most people's standards, the city was just waking up, but Derek was used to waking up early, he concluded that being trapped in the tower was having its effects on him. He decided it was time to leave the tower and go into the city a little bit. He hadn't done that before because of the half-breeds that had been tasked to follow him in the shadows. He could always feel them in the edges of his senses whenever he stepped out of the room. The half-breeds had set tails for him and Isanna only because they didn't have too many good soldiers to spare right now, Isanna stayed inside the castle training so they reamined extra vigilent around Derek. He didn't like the feeling of being followed at all, he couldn't help but sense them, his senses had been sensitive since the fight and he didn't want to let his guard down in this kingdom, so he had to endure feeling the unfamiliar aura and gaze of his stalkers.
He was interested in seeing two places, the north Gate and the dock. It would look too suspiscious if he went to either of those places, but the north gate might be too much so he decided to go to the dock. It wasn't as quite as when they have arrived but it was still pretty deserted compared to a typical dock, as he expected there were no foriegn ships in the dock, and it didn't look like there were ships leaving the port too. The barbarian ships were still there, some parts of them have been stripped of wood and other materials being used to repair the city. The great size of the ships popped a question in his head. There had to be some barbarian survivors, according to the half-breeds there was none, their men had been too angry and had killed whoever they found even if they surrendered, the red mages themselves had killed many in the process of sucking their mana. But Derek's doubt grew bigger and bigger as he looked at the big ships, Fiona hadn't heard anything about barbarian prisoners in all the meeting she had eavesdropped on, but that still didn't satisfy his query.
If they were keeping it quiet even in their own meetings then it could be useful if he could find out where they were keeping the prisoners. They can't be in the castle, that would be too risky, they had seen what they were capable of and they knew about Fiona's ability to take over animals. If it was upto him, he would be keeping the prisoners somewhere far from the castle, but not just anywhere, the place would still need to have secuirty in place without making it seem odd, which again meant two places, the dock or the gates and according to Ron's hurried report he had taken in the morning, the security was much more in the north gate.
But for doing anything he needed to get rid off his tail, which would not be that difficult but that would just make his stalkers more paranoid and panicked that he knew that he was being followed, and they could end up doing something desperate which he might not like.
So Derek sneaked off onto one of the barbarian ships, nobody saw him entering through a small window, except his followers. He felt two of them entered behind him and others stayed back in case he came out of somewhere else. He could feel the change in their gazes as they became more excited that he was up to something and their boring duty was finally getting more interesting.
The ship was like a maze, there were plenty of rooms, corridors and levels to move through. There were some guards on the ship already but not too many to cause a trouble in his plan, he moved around the ship a little, his speed increased little by little, it was getting more and more dificult for his stalkers to follow him, all they could see was his shadow every other corner they turned, he took them deeper and deeper into the bottom levels of the ship, where the light was minimal and the visibility was low. He found the perfect place and time for doing his trick and he in an instant released a lot of mana from his body in a rough black shape similar to his own body, the shape moved on with similar speed to his like before and he hid in a room in the other direction with his real speed which was too fast for his followers to see. They kept following the mana double thinking it was the real Derek.
Derek then carefully left the ship from another entrance and too fast for anyone to catch him leaving. Hid plan worked, he found himself out of the dock without anyone following him. He changed his appearance a little bit, he stole a large rob from a shop and wore it over his armor and sword, he stayed in the shadows and moved too fast for anyone to catch a second glance at him. He reached the north gate, it was his first time here so he didn't know where was what, Ron's map didn't include the gates. There was a big iron gate in the wall which was closed right now, the building was built around it, on the sides and at the top of the gate. There were guards on every corner and window he could see, he couldn't see any straight way into the building.
He waited for some loophole in the security but the guards hadn't left any blindspots in their security which solidified his speculation that they were guarding something else. The only option left for him was to use a special advanced technique that he had learned over many years for such occasions. He let mana engulf his whole body, the mana slowly turned into water, the water changed in density and color and took form of a second skin and clothes, changing his appearance completely into one of the guards he had seen at the ship. He checked his appearance one last time and walked towards the north gate. He had to hurry because this technique required a lot of mana continuosly and a lot of concentration to not let the illusion drop. He had never even imagined you could use water and air affinities for creating such illusions, until he had met the old man who gave him an old scroll describing this technique. The old man had got the scroll from the Soul Knights, it was the first time he had heard about them and was extremely fascinated by the deep knowledge of mana they had to think of such techniques.
He kept his head straight and walked straight into the building through the guards coming in and out. Nobody gave him a second look or stopped him. Once inside he looked around to see which way to go, he couldn't stand in one place for too long to not look suspicious.
He let his senses guide him to the deeper parts of the building, once the number of people around started to get thin and he started receiving more looks by everyone passing by he knew he was going in the right direction. He found a secluded room, it was someone's office, and used it to change his appearance again, he hid his armor and sword in the office behind a loose floorboard and shed his heavy clothes. The next illusion he dawned was all black, he changed the water surface as such that it reflected no light, and he look like he had wore the darkest robe ever. But it still wasn't enough, so to complete his plan, he stepped out in the corridor making sure no one was there at the time, and let a small breeze of mana flow into the building, the mana carefully extinguished every hanging lantern that was lit in the corridors. He had little time before they lit them back up, so he ran fast through the corridors checking every room and sound. He was heading down stairs to the bottom levels, it wasn't apparent from th outside that the building was built inside the ground as well. He soon found himself in a dungeon like in the castle, he knew that he was in the right place now because there were two big guards at the entrance to the dungeon, but they didn't notice him in the dark as he ran past them with great speed and covered in dark skin.
