I watch Tito Herman's car drive out from our house.
When it was already far away, it was only then that I decided to go back inside our house. The whole area has been cleaned with the help of the helpers sent by Tita Amara to clean up the clutter. The equipment has also been properly restored to its original position. But there seems to be something missing ...
I took a deep breath before heading to the frames placed on the table near the bottom of the stairs.
"You're the one missing," I whispered to myself.
I took one of the frame where all of us three are smiling like a real happy family. It was five months ago when we decided to travel in this private beach. This is one of the last and happiest moment we all have. My Mama and Papa were hugging together and I'm the one on the middle hugging them also.
How I wish this was just my worst nightmare. My father's death. My mother's painful case in hospital. My family's abruptions. All of this hurtful scene in my life!
I didn't even tell Papa that even if he did that, I still thanked him that he became my father. Yes, cheating is a mistake! But I can't deny my love for my father, he's not a perfect husband but a perfect father for his daughter. And I treasure that.
I looked up at the wall where the large frame of their wedding hung. Next to it was my pictures every year or my growth picture, it was started from my baby figure were my Mama carried me in her hands until this recent year taken from garage with my new black honda motor.
As I look to my parents wedding picture, my heart ache even more.
After looking at the photos, I went to my bedroom to take a bath. This house is the only thing my father left, aside from his debt. This is big for the three of us, one master's bedroom were my mama and papa sleep, my room not very large but it suits all my things and stuff and also two guest rooms for our visitors.
My father is the recent Governor in our town, enough to maintain our lifestyle and my mother is elementary teacher thats why she's very conservative the way I behaved.
But now, everything is gone. My father got removed from his position when his issues pop out. My mother temporarily replaced when she got comatose because of my father. And now I don't know when she will wake up from that state, it's almost a month and nothing had change from her vitals as the doctors said.
I fell asleep thinking about the things that had happened to my family and the responsibilities that I now have to bear. It hurts to think that every little things that are most important to you could also dissapear so quickly. Love, trust, person or thing.
I was covered with a blanket when the sunlight hit my face. I took a few more minutes to take a nap before deciding to get up. I went into the bathroom to take a shower, then went downstairs.
As I went out from my room, it feels like this house is so lonely. It used to be noisy in the kitchen because before, Mama was already preparing food. Especially that Papa and her are both busy for work. But now everything becomes the opposite, silent and nothing may hear rather than my footsteps.
I went to the kitchen and open the refrigerator to find something to cook. I realized that the food was only for two weeks away and that if I couldn't find a job right away, I certainly wouldn't last.
It's also good that I can cook somehow because now it seems like I will always do it for myself.
I cooked my breakfast and brew my coffee. I heard a knock on the door so I quickly attended to it.
"Ohh" I got surprised. It's early in the morning and Henry is right in front of my door.
"Have you eaten? "He asked.
I just shook my head before thinking of opening the door for him to enter.
"I just finished cooking and I'm preparing to eat." I added as I walk ahead of him.
"Great! Let's eat together. I bring you food, I thought you haven't cook yet." He said and lifted the paper bag he was holding.
"Sure." I smiled before I take a sit.
I let Henry arrange the food he brought. I know that they only care for me because I'm the only one left in here.
"So ... You haven't yet eaten?" I asked.
"Not yet. I really plan to eat with you so I've already brought a lot." He slowly sat down on the opposite chair.
"What are you!? I can cook. " I laughed a little.
He smiled. "No. I want to eat with you." His response was serious.
I was stunned for a moment. I drank coffee to recover from what he just said and just started eating the food he brought.
"Did Tita cook this or did you?" It's delicious and it's doubtful if Henry cooked it.
He smirked. "What do you think?"
I stared at him so he laughed a little. "It's probably Tita. You don't have any cooking skills."
He laughed out loud. "You speak so bad Sin. I'll learn that too, of course when I'm ready to start a family."
"Well you should, maybe your future wife will be miserable."
"She's not going to be miserable, she's even lucky." His eyebrows went up and down. He rub his chin with his thumb before he gave me a boasting look. "Isn't it!?"
"Tss. I don't know with you."
Eventually we just resumed eating breakfast.
"So... What will you do after this?" Henry asked.
I was in the sink washing the things we used while his back leaned on the refrigerator with his arms crossed over his chest. I glanced at him slightly before I continued.
"I'll look for a job"
"Work?"
He was obviously confused so I turned around to face him.
"Well... As you can see I don't have my parents now all I have is myself and I need to work in order to live."
He looked away. Maybe he realize that my life is different now than he used to
.
"If you have just accepted Mama's offer." He whispered but enough for me to hear.
It's true that Tita Amara offered that I live there with them but I don't want to take advantage of the good they do for me. I didn't want to get to the point where I added to their burden. We have a house, even if I'm the only one, I can definitely afford it, this is enough for me.
"Henry, you know I can't depend on others for the rest of my life. I also had to stand on my own. I'm thankful that Tito and Tita are there, that's already a big thing for me. You already help me a lot."
"Tss. You know Sin, there's a right time for you to stand on your own and that's definitely not now. Let my family help you first."
I shook my head. "You don't understand. This is my problem. I don't want others to have problems just because of me. Besides, I can do it."
He stared at me for a long time before he slowly nod and took a deep breath.
"If that's what you want then. But don't forget that I'm always here for you."
I nod. "Yeah."
"Hmm. I wanted to go with you to look for a job but I promised Papa that I would come back soon. We have to visit something. "
"It's okay. I'll just let you know when I find something,"
"Right."
After that, Henry also had to leave for his errand with Tito Herman. I, on the other hand, have also prepared myself because I'll start looking for a job.
I wear my black high waist jeans, white printed simple shirt for the top and black shoes. Also my black sling bag for my documents and pocket money.
When I passed a restaurant I started asking if they needed a waitress or even a dishwasher but there are currently no vacancies because they got one last week.
The small store is the same, the owner doesn't need a cashier or even a cleaner because his nephew goes there to help.
I sigh. I never knew that searching for work have a difficulty. Maybe I should continue searching probably the ones I asked earlier were just coincidence.
"Can I come inside? "I asked the guard.
He examined me from head to toe. "Do you have appointment ma'am?"
"Uhh...I haven't. But I saw the post there saying they're looking for cashier. I would like to apply." I pointed to the paper glued to the glass wall.
The guard frowned. He examined me again. "It's like you're still a young girl for that kind of job, just go home. Maybe it's only for your truancy so you're looking for a job, probably you're afraid to ask money on your parents."
My ears heated at what I heard. Just because I said I'm looking for a job, he's not addressing me as a ma'am anymore !? Okay that's fine. But ... young girl!? Really?
What rights does he have to insult me?! I was looking for a better job here, and now he's accusing me that I will just consume my salary for my truancy. How dare him! And ... am I afraid to ask my parents? If my father is still alive I'm sure without me asking for money he will still gave me and I'm sure that I was not in this state looking for a job at this age. And my mother she never refused at once giving me money when I need it she gladly gave me, sometimes there's even more.
I could still hear over and over again in my brain what the guard had said. I cannot accept.
"Uhmm ... Excuse me?" I turned to someone who spoke behind.
It was only then that I noticed that I was blocking the way up to the glass door. I quickly stepped aside so the woman could pass.
"Good morning ma'am! Please come in." Respectful greeting from the guard. He even opened the door.
Wow! I didn't even received 'Good morning' before, this guard really favors someone. I looked at the woman. Obviously wearing an expensive clothes, also all the jewelry was shining gold, even the bag she was carrying was from a well-known brand. I can see the overflowing luxury in her posture, even her actions and the way she speaks are artistic.
I look at my myself. My clothes are branded too but very simple since I was looking for a job. I'm wearing expensive shoes and sling bag too that Mama bought. But now I feel like I never match anymore the high lifestyle. I cannot afford to pay or buy for it anymore.
I can't understand myself. I was jealous at the woman for treating her politely because she was known that she have something to spurt in life. I resent why I am in such a situation that I have to humble myself and accept what others will throw at me. Why are people so unequal?
The guard returned in front of me. "So ... Manong can I get in now?"
His ruffled eyebrow rose. "Hayy, young people are really stubborn." He showed me the log book. "Here. Write your name then it's already fine." He said.
I took it easily and wrote down my name and the other details.
The cold aircon greeted me. I approached the woman who greeted me that were the attendant and also the assistant.
"Good morning ma'am! How may I help you?" She asked.
Her uniform is nice and she also wearing heels, so the difference between the two of us is even more define. It is a small jewelry store and this is my first time to come here because my mom and I would always buy jewelry from another store and it's more bigger in there though.
"Uhmm... Hi! Can I talk to your manager?" I shyly said.
She was stilled for a moment but nodded as well and guided me through the door. I think the manager was inside.
She knocked twice before she turn the doorknob.
She held out her hand for me to go inside so then I entered. When I roam my eyes all over the room I observed that it was really clean. All papers and furnitures were in the right places. It isn't like the other offices because it is small and I think it can only accommodate for five to six visitors.
The woman in the reading glass looked at me, I think she was in her middle 40's. I walked quickly towards her table and sat on the chair placed in front of her table.
"Good morning ma'am! My name is Sienne Laura Salamera. " I introduced myself as she simply nodded.
"I was looking for a job and suddenly I saw the post outside, it says your looking for a cashier. Uhmm... I just want to ask if the position is still vacant."
It seems like she think first before she slightly clear her throat and removed her sunglass. "Well, Ms. Salamera ... right?"
I nodded.
"Okay. Ms. Salamera, the position is still available but I don't think it suits to you. May I know your age?"
I seem to know what will happen from what she had said but I still hope that I can get a job now.
"I'm officially 18 ma'am." I confidently said.
I think I'm at the right age because that's what I always see in other works, that they are finding workers who had already in a legal age.
She adjusted on her seat. "Hmm. I see, so it means you haven't get a job like this before."
I nodded because that was the truth. "First time?" She asked.
"Yes ma'am."
"As you can see were running a jewelry store here. Yes! we're looking for a cashier but we can't just permit someone who doesn't have an experience at all." I nodded again. Understanding what she had said.
"And I don't want to have a bad background for the first time to the customers. We need a fine credentials of employees before we accept."
I nodded again. I don't have any of the qualities that she's been looking for, maybe this job are not for me, maybe there's something else.
I got up. "Sorry for the inconvenience ma'am, and thank you for the time."
She smiled and nodded. "I'm sorry Ms. Salamera."
I went out and the woman accompanied me to the manager greeted me again. When I came out of the glass door, the guard smiled at me, as if he knew what had happened inside.
"Any news kid?" He asked.
I didn't answer him as I only gave him a sullen look before I pass him. Bad day!
