"Sir, the chairman's man is already lurking around the company. Don't you think this is risky for you?" Matthew asked. It had been a week since Noah had decided to become a manager at his own company, which he had kept hidden from his father, Jacob.
Noah scratched his chin as he continued to read through the documents for the upcoming Teda Group board meeting. Matthew couldn't quite read what was on his boss's mind, despite having followed him since his days at the overseas branch.
"Check his schedule. If it is possible, I wanted to meet him today," said Noah suddenly, raising his head. His expressionless face gave Matthew a chill down his spine.
Matthew quickly nodded in response to Noah's order, feeling a sense of unease at his boss's sudden change in demeanour. "Yes, sir. Right away." He quickly went to the door but paused as he reached the knob. "Sir," he said, hesitatingly.
"Hmm," Noah's look remained unreadable.
"About Miss Sarah," Matthew continued, but he paused again, uncertain if he should proceed. Noah's eyes suddenly changed, turning cold and sending him a warning not to interfere with whatever plan he had in mind.
"If you don't have anything more to say, I would prefer you go on with the thing I ask you too," Noah said, closing the file of the document he read before.
"Ah, I'm sorry sir. I will go now," Matthew excused himself and turned.
"Wait," Noah's low and deep voice immediately stopped Matthew from moving.
"Speak," Noah said firmly, his eyes still fixed on Matthew.
Matthew hesitated for a moment before gathering his courage and continuing. "I was just wondering if you have any plans to inform Miss Sarah about your new position in the company, sir?" He lied, that was not the question he wanted to ask Noah but because of fear, he changed it.
Noah's expression remained stoic, and Matthew couldn't tell if his question had offended him. "I have no plans to inform anyone about my position in this company," Noah finally replied, his tone firm and final.
"Understood, sir. I'll get back to work now." And with that, Matthew turned and left the room, not wanting to waste more time in the tense atmosphere.
Noah sighed and rubbed the back of his neck, glancing at the now-empty cup of tea as he recalled his earlier encounter with Sarah that morning.
"Are you that stupid?! How long have you been working as a personal assistant?!" Noah threw the paper that was smudged with a bit of tea that Sarah had brought for him. "I told you to put it there. Don't you get it?"
Sarah's hands were held together as her pale face looked at him with fear. She shook, hearing the shout from Noah.
Noah shook his head, his frustration evident. "Just go and get me a new set of these documents," he said dismissively, turning his attention back to the documents on his desk. He secretly glanced as Sarah quickly scurried out of the room, feeling embarrassed and ashamed.
Back in reality, Noah stood up, taking the cup with him. That was the only excuse he had for now to check on her. Stepping out of his room, he walked slowly to the pantry, where the staff quickly stood up upon seeing him.
"Let me help you, sir," Leita tried to reach for the cup in his hand, but Noah moved it away quickly.
"No, it's okay. I wanted to get another cup." Noah gave her a feeble smile and caught sight of Sarah standing at her cubicle, the moment she heard his voice.
She rushed towards him immediately and said, "Let me, sir," taking the cup from Noah's hand, and headed to the pantry right away.
He was supposed to wait in his room, but then his legs brought him to the pantry. "Are you okay?" Noah asked, his voice laced with concern as he noticed Sarah's trembling hands.
"Oh sir, you could just wait in your room, I will send it in a minute." Sarah said, realising he was standing at the back. "Ouch!"
The cup dropped and scattered in pieces. Sarah was pouring the hot water earlier and when she talked to Noah, she lost her focus and unexpectedly poured on her other hand that was holding the cup.
Noah rushed over to her immediately, ignoring the mess on the floor. "Are you okay?" he asked, his tone still firm but with a hint of concern.
Sarah nodded, her eyes downcast, too timid to meet his gaze. "I'm fine, sir," she murmured, trying to pull her injured hand away from him.
Noah held on to her hand firmly, inspecting the burn with a critical eye. "This is going to impede your work," he said, his voice devoid of any sympathy.
Sarah bit her lip, trying to keep her emotions in check. "I'll manage, sir," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
Noah raised an eyebrow, unconvinced. "You will manage? You could even hurt yourself just by making a cup of tea. Just go see a doctor," he said, his voice still cold and detached.
Sarah felt hurt by his words, but she knew they were true. In the past week, the only tasks he had assigned her were making him tea and copying a certain document, yet she couldn't even do those simple tasks correctly.
Noah noticed the hurt expression on Sarah's face but chose to ignore it. He turned away, reaching for his phone to call for a car. "I'll have someone take you to the hospital. You can't continue to work like this," he said, his voice still lacking any warmth.
"No, sir, it's okay," Sarah replied, pausing to try and hide the sadness she felt. "I'll go see a doctor on my own. Let me make another cup of tea for you." She reached for a new cup on the tray, but her hand was stopped by Noah's.
"What's on your mind?" Noah asked, slightly irritated. He took the cup from her hand and put it back.
Without another word, Noah gently took her injured hand and led her to the sink, turning on the cold water to soothe the burn. He carefully washed her hand and then led her to the pantry's first aid kit, where he pulled out a tube of burn cream and applied it to her hand. His touch was surprisingly gentle.
"Take a break and go see the doctor now," he said, his voice softer than before.
"Thank you, sir. I'm sorry for disturbing your work," Sarah said, standing up and suddenly bowing. "Since I keep making mistakes, I don't think I'm fit for this job. I'll hand in my resignation letter tomorrow." Her unexpected words surprised Noah and left the room in silence.
