Capítulo 4: Chapter 4

The chest was almost full of Sophie's things and clothes. That was a perfect thing because there was a big possibility that Sophie would not perceive immediately that someone had stolen her belongings even though it was just borrowing.

Agnes chose what she needed from the bottom of Sophie's clothes hoping that this would make it more difficult for Sophie to realize their absence. Agnes picked out an off-white shirt and a brown skirt. Her hands worked quickly with sharp, confident movements. The faster she left from there, the better.

"Oh, God, make her not notice. I am not stealing them. I will return them to her. Please, do not let her understand anything until then." She prayed silently.

She tidied the rest of the clothes in the chest precisely as she had found them. When she finished, she hid the chosen clothes under what she was wearing and went out of the dormitories.

She wished that the maids in the kitchen had not yet finished picking the peas from the floor.

She could not know for sure, but she could not stay in the dormitory any longer. She had to leave there as soon as possible.

She got out, ran around the house until she reached out of the library's window she had previously unhooked. She peeked inside, and luckily for her, no one was inside.

Agnes gently pushed the window, and it opened. She climbed in and bolted the window again. One thing remained to do. To get out of there without being seen. She stood behind the door and stuck her ear on it. But then she remembered that even people were talking outside the door, she would not hear anything because the door was too thick.

So, she had to open the door. What if someone is outside? What would she say? With what excuse did she come to the library? Lord Augustine expressly forbids it. The only exceptions are two maids who clean the library every morning.

Agnes thought about it for a while, and an idea flashed in her mind. She went to the shelves and got a book from the specific kind that Adela reads. Now she had the excuse she was looking for. That Adela sent her to bring her a book. Perfect!

She opened the door without fear and got out to get face to face with a maid.

"Hello, Agnes," the maid told her kind with a smile.

"Hello, Anna. Adela sent me to bring her a book she wants to read," explained herself and showed her the book.

"Oh, that's very nice," Anna told her, pushing herself to show some interest, "it was nice to see you, but I have to move on; I have a lot of chores waiting for me," she informed her and left in a hurry without waiting for an answer.

"That was rude," Agnes thought, "But I prefer it than the questions. I was fortunate that it was Anna who only cares about her job."

Before Agnes went up to Adela's chamber, she went through the small living room and bolted the window that had unhooked there too.

After, full of enthusiasm, she climbed up the stairs and went straight to her mistress's chamber.

But Adela was not there!

Adela thought about it over and over again and decided that Agnes's safety mattered more to her than her desire to meet that boy. She was willing to find some other way of meeting him without putting Agnes in danger.

When she finally decided to come out of her room and started looking for Agnes, the time had passed, and Agnes – at that time- was entering the kitchen.

Adela, during her search, could not avoid the living room where her mother was sitting with her sister, embroidering and chatted with them for a while, resulting in even more delay.

And this was wishful work because all Adela's effort would ruin Agnes's plan.

Unwittingly, of course.

Agnes was looking at the empty chamber and did not know what to assume. First, she hid the clothes she had taken from Sophie in the closet, and after she opened the door, to go out and found Adela.

A few steps later, she saw Adela returning. As soon as Adela saw her, she ran to her.

"Where have you been? I'm looking for you everywhere. Also, my mother held me up a little bit too. Listen, I thought about it again. Do not go. It would be best if you did not go. I do not want…."

«Shh…. Stop talking. It might be anyone around and may listen to us. Come with me." Agnes told her and pulled her into the chamber.

"What is going on, Agnes? Just tell me, do not keep me any longer in suspense."

Without answering, Agnes opened the closet and took the clothes out.

"But these are maid's clothes," Adela said in surprise.

"Yes, they are," Agnes said with a smile.

"So you did it?" Adela looked at her with big eyes.

"Yes! I did it." Agnes announced.

"That means everything went well? You were not in danger?" Adela asked happily with shining eyes and a wide smile.

"Yes, everything went just fine."

"Well done, Agnes! You're amazing!" Adela exclaimed excitedly and hugged her, full of joy and relief.

The little girl laughed and said. "Let's see first if the clothes fit you."

"Okay, you are right."

Adela wore the clothes, and they fitted on her body perfectly. The assessment they had made about Sophie turned out to be correct.

"I feel like it has always been mine," Adela said and began to dance with joy.

"That is great, Adela!" Agnes told her, laughing, "But now, take the clothes off to hide them before anyone enters and caught us."

"Yes, okay. You always have right, Agnes. It is one of the reasons that I completely trust you." Adela said to the little girl, who smiled at her, listening to that beautiful words. No one has ever spoken to her in such pretty words.

Adela stopped dancing around the room and undressed with Agnes's help. Agnes took the clothes, folded them carefully, and hid them deep in the closet; As far away as possible from eyes full of curiosity.

"I cannot describe how happy I am, Agnes. Tomorrow I will be near to him; we will meet face to face", Adela said dreamily with a smile that did not seem to come off her face.

"May everything go as you wish, Adela," Agnes wished her and caressed her tenderly on the shoulder. "But do not get so excited. Wait first to see what everyone will do tomorrow and if you will finally be able to go,"

"Yes, you have right, again. We will see."

After dinner, which included roasted chicken and peas (yes, the cook finally managed to have it all perfect on time), Adela retired into her room, excusing herself that she felt very sleepy. But it was a lie. The truth was that she wanted to be left alone with her happy, dreamy thoughts.

That night she had her sweetest sleep ever.

The following day, Adela woke up very early from the sweet smell of anticipation.

She looked out from the open window. It had just begun to dawn, and the light was still dim breath. Not even the birds had yet started chirping.

She stretched out on her bed with a big smile on her face.

That new-fresh day might be the big day!!
