CHAPTER 112
THE BISHOP OF PADUA gave the impression that he had seen a ghost. Her face was white and her eyes were troubled. Greg couldn't help but notice the uneasiness that had taken over the priest.
— I trust you know why we're here, Your Eminence — Greg said.
— Yes, it was a terrible thing, I could never imagine something like that. I really can't understand it — the bishop said to the policemen sitting opposite him.
— What can you not understand?
— That horrible crime, the murder of a friar so dedicated to the work of God.
Greg realized that the bishop was speaking the truth.
— Did you know the friar for a long time?
— Two years ago. I can tell you that he was a man of simple habits and few words. He belonged to a very demanding order of the Church, the order of Cistercian monks.
— Is this not an order in which monks live in seclusion? Greg asked.
— Yes, the monks of the Cistercian order live isolated from the world, spending most of their lives cloistered...
— Yet he was here in Padua.
— In fact, Detective, Charles no longer belonged to the Cistercian order.
— Did he abandon the monastic life?
— Abandon would not be the appropriate term.
— Wouldn't that be appropriate? — Greg asked with interest.
— It would be correct to say that Charles Varineo was chosen to exercise an important vocation.
— Do you mean to practice exorcism?
— While the Church has modernized, that doesn't mean it has let its guard down on its great enemy. Charles, due to his life of prayer and dedication to spiritual things, was recognized by priests with special assignments within the Church, as a capable warrior for direct confrontation against the hosts of our adversary. And it looks like he fell in combat.
— When you speak of enemy, adversary, are you referring to the Devil?
— This is a great adversary not only of the Church, but of all mankind, Detective.
— Yes, I understand — Greg confessed in a tone of voice that recognized the great truth in the bishop's words.
There was a short silence between everyone, until the moved bishop broke it.
— It was a horrible death, wasn't it?
— Yes — Greg muttered, nodding.
— But who could do that to a man like that? asked the bishop.
— That's what we're trying to find out, we believe that the monk was the victim of a secret society that practices Satanism.
— A secret society that practices Satanism?
Gregory Evans saw the bewilderment in the cleric's eyes.
— We are responsible for a kidnapping case of a boy who was murdered in New York, all the evidence brought us to Italy. The murder of this monk has similar characteristics.
— What similarity can there be between a kidnapping and a murder?
— This boy, after he escaped captivity, was in a hospital under our protection when he was attacked again, but this time the result was different.
— My God!
— From what we saw, the house was ransacked. But what could thieves be looking for in the home of a man who has taken a vow of poverty? — Greg asked.
The Detective noticed that the bishop's hands were shaking as he presented them with a small letter.
— Maybe that could help them, Detective — said the bishop, still uncertain if that attitude of his was the right one.
— What is this? — Greg asked, picking up the envelope as he gazed at the anguished priest.
— As Friar Charles was acting on an exorcism case in my episcopal jurisdiction, he was obliged by canon law to report to me all strange episodes that occurred in his activity. At first I believed that Charles should be removed, as I feared for his sanity...
— But now…— asked Greg as he opened the envelope.
— Now I believe him. Please, Detective, read the letter.
"Mister Bishop, it is with a deep sense of awe that, in accordance with canon law, I come to report to you terrible revelations which, I believe, have come to me, by the mercy of God.
I ask you to meditate on the content of this letter. And together with me, share the weight of these revelations. Another letter is being sent to the Vatican for judgment by His Holiness.
Two weeks ago, when I was called to exercise the office entrusted to me as a minister of the Holy Church, I came across something that shook me to the core.
The entity was in a girl. A young woman who, deceived by friends, decided to participate in a spiritualism session. Being a weak person, the evil spirit had no difficulty getting hold of her.
This is common, and this sad reality is the raison d'être of my ministry.
What surprised me a lot, because in more than twenty years of exorcist practices I had never come across something similar, was the manifestation of the entity.
I followed all the steps of the exorcism, and when I ordered him to leave the girl, I was surprised when, instead of resisting through spasms and convulsions in the possessed body, the anguished entity proceeded to reveal a secret to me.
I resisted, because we shouldn't listen to these creatures, proven to be liars.
But when she was about to conclude the exorcism with the expulsion, she uttered the words that piqued my curiosity:
A secret of Lucifer."
— A Lucifer secret? — said Fernando in surprise, looking at the Detective.
Greg continued reading:
"For some mysterious reason, contrary to all exorcism rites, I stopped to listen to him.
It was as if a veil had been lifted from my eyes. I could then realize that many terrible facts, injustices and wars that occurred throughout history were the result of a diabolical purpose that is difficult for human intelligence to understand. I could understand that hell is preparing for the government of the world and the outbreak of the Third World War. I got to know how events are heading towards the fulfillment of the Apocalypse. All from the appearance of the man of sin, the great Priest and Prince of Lucifer.
At first I doubted, because as I mentioned, this cursed entity is not worthy of trust. His only objective is to remain as long as possible in a human body, thus fleeing the infernal flames. Yet I have been able to prove from very ancient books that the hosts of the underworld are kept in subjection by hatred and by a discipline the cruelty of which no man could conceive.
That entity, moved by hatred against the Prince of Hades, revealed to me that the Great Priest of Lucifer, known to us as the Antichrist, is already in our midst, and aided by the adepts of evil, men and women who, deceived, serve the purposes of Devil already has a plan in advance to deceive the nations.
These nations will be seduced by the magnetism of the man of sin, who, cunningly paralyzing all the forces of Hades, will establish a period of peace in the world. Amazed, men will offer him the kingdom of Earth. Once assumed the power of this universal throne, the Priest of Hades will declare himself God. This initially seemed absurd to me, but by carefully examining the Holy Scriptures, I was able to verify the accuracy of the entity's reports.
This is an old plan, so old that it arose in Lucifer's mind when he was still in Eden, he felt jealous of man's happiness and managed to harm the glorious purposes of God reserved for the human species.
The man of sin has already been chosen, now he awaits only the propitious occasion for his baptism to be carried out in the blood of a special virgin..."
— Virgin Special? — The agent exclaimed as he looked at Greg.
— It was what I feared, everything points in that direction — he confirmed — there will probably be another murder.
"...who was born under the sign of Mars, on the twenty-ninth day of the alignment of the stars of Orion..."
— What does that mean, Detective?
— I know as much as you, Fernando.
— Whatever that means, I know one thing: a girl is in great danger!
"...then he will bring night to mankind, and laughter will turn to weeping, truth to lies, and the third part of the stars that fell will seek to return to their former place by way of the sea of blood..."
— What does that mean? — Greg asked the bishop, interrupting the reading — I don't understand.
— It is a difficult passage to understand — agreed the bishop.
— When he speaks of the third part of the stars, he seems to be referring to the passage from the prophet Isaiah, who gives an account of the fallen angels.
— But it says here they will seek to return, what can that be?
— I really don't know what to answer. This makes no sense, there is no Church dogma or doctrine that says anything about it...
— Do you claim that the Church knows nothing about this? — Greg let his distress show.
— Well, there's nothing that's been made public or even that I'm aware of. If anything, it should only be known to the Pope. Some secret vital to the Church...
— Is this really possible? — Greg asked in surprise.
— Yes, there are secrets whose knowledge belongs only to the Supreme Pontiff, see the case of the third secret of Fatima.
— The third secret of Fatima was revealed to the world just now, a short time ago — interjected Fernando.
— Yes, it has only now been revealed, but only in part — The bishop smiled.
— In part?
— Yes, there are very difficult aspects. The pontiff judged it more appropriate to keep it a secret.
Greg turned his eyes to the text, having his attention awakened by the final words.
"My spirit is broken and my soul is troubled, I have never seen anything like it before, I feel guilty hearing such a revelation from such a terrible creature. My heart conflicts with reason and my wish would be to forget everything. My reason, in the name of prudence, forced me to reveal the terrible things I heard.
Because of the terror these revelations inspire in me, I keep them secret, communicating them only to you, in obedience to Canon Law and to the Vicar of Christ and Bishop of Rome, His Holiness the Pope. May God enlighten your souls so that the light of his wonderful wisdom can guide the steps of Christianity in this very difficult moment.
Your humble servant in the Lord Friar Charles Varineo"
— Was this correspondence sent to the Pope? — Greg asked.
— Yes, by the rules of Canon Law, if any priest discovers something powerful enough to harm the Church, he has an obligation to communicate it to the bishop of his diocese and the Pope.
— How many people in Rome would have access to this correspondence?
— A very limited number, I can assure you.
