A protective barrier is a set of runic arrays that are formed to create a powerful shield that would stop any attacks from an external force.  However, it consumes too much energy that it could only be set up from a secured location and should be immobile to prevent the array from overlapping.

Hence protective barriers are only installed in cities or large communities with many people. Central Town itself has a powerful protective barrier that would activate once the town is in peril. However, it would only be a last recourse as it would truly consume too many mana stones which are the source of its energy.

However, this type of knowledge is now obsolete when the flying ship came. This is because, although no one realized it, the talisman that the soldiers are wearing is actually a miniaturized version of this type of barrier.
