Chapter 6: Confusion
She opened her eyes and she only saw light around her. Statues of men and women were all around the path. When she watched them carefully she realized they all had wings. The place was empty, she walked around. She could admire the golden columns and the pale marble. Her nude feet were stepping on it like cotton, it was so warm and nice.
She heard a masculine voice but she was not able to understand what he was saying. When she lowered her head, she saw a shadow. Someone was behind her. As she returned, she could see nobody. After checking, the shadow was still there. Surprisingly, she didn't feel scared at all. On the contrary, this shadow was representing something very nice and her heart was beating stronger. She raised her hand in front of her and then she felt another hand taking hers. Even if she could not see it, she had the feeling that she knew this person.
She felt attracted to the columns, once she passed them. She saw an astonishing palace. The ceiling was a blue mosaic, letting out a nice soft light. The bottom was covered in white marble that reflected the blue light. Everything was so beautiful, she smiled like she never did before.
Everything was gigantic and, in the middle of the circular room, there was a superb golden statue of a man with tremendous wings. The man was carrying a sword and pointing to the sky. She could see that in the mosaic, there were two figures. One dark and one blue.
When Arja saw the statue she could not restrain herself. After all, that was a dream, right? She ran to it and stopped in front of it.
"Is that you?"
She saw that in her shadow the silhouette behind her was nodding.
"I know you…"
Then she felt a hand on her shoulder. She placed her hand on it. This feeling was deeply disturbing. She had so many emotions at this moment, she didn't know what to think anymore. She could hear his voice but she couldn't, she could see him but she couldn't, and at last, she could touch him but in the end… Her hand was only touching her shoulder.
She felt a tear running along her face. Her heart was crying, she couldn't put a word about what happened at this moment. She placed a finger on her lips, it was a sweet taste, a taste she knew very well and yet, unknown. She said once again with a more trembling voice.
"I know you…"
She felt arms all around her, powerful arms. As she was watching the statue a light started to glow. Slowly the light burned her eyes and she was forced to close them. When she opened them again, she was in her bedroom. Her servant was banging at the door.
"Princess! Prince Ulrich is waiting for you. Altraya and he are ready for a while on the bottom. Please, prepare yourself!"
Arja rushed to dress, her heart was tight, and she didn't want to leave her dream. When she arrived at the bottom she saw Ulich on one side and Altraya on the other in silence. It was promising to be very joyful. She looked like she was ready to destroy him and he looked like he was already defeated by her.
Arja took a deep breath. This trip promised to be "relaxing".
She jumped in the car with them silently. The driver pressed the horses and they took the direction of the lake.
In the streets, Arja could watch all the misery spreading through the city. She had never seen such things before. Altraya was used to it as she was visiting her family in the countryside regularly and didn't pay attention to it.
When they arrived at the lake, Arja took out the basket with her, Altraya sat with her and they started to prepare a nice place. Ulrich joined them. They were all three sitting in silence.
Around them, there was no life anymore. Before the war, this place was full of entertainment. Young people were coming to play and to flirt, constantly giving hilarious situations. They always had so much fun coming here and watching them.
Everything looked so dead now, so lost, so dark. Altraya raised her head in the direction of Ulrich. She had tears seeing him. Arja tried her best to make things less awkward. Then Ulrich screamed at her.
"I am sorry! Father obliged me to lie! The general is dead! This was a massacre, we had to run away in an emergency and we could not even take their body with us. We had to let them there."
Arja opened her mouth in shock. She could not believe it, it was so sudden. Altraya lowered her head, she was now crying out loud. Arja took her friend in her arms and watched Ulrich with anger.
"Ulrich, maybe you should go back to the palace, we will join you a bit later."
Ulrich didn't wait for it to be said twice. He stood up and almost ran. He left so fast that he even forgot to take one of the horses and came back walking.
Altraya grabbed Arja and cried on her shoulder.
"I knew it, Arja, it hurts so bad. It hurts!"
They stayed in this position for hours, then Altraya got calmer. They could finally talk. Arja didn't know how to help the pain of her friend.
"Ulrich didn't lie to you, you know it, it was a direct order. He had no choice, please, don't be mad at him."
Altraya knew everything before, she knew that if the King told him to say nothing then he had no choice even if he wanted with the deep of his heart. And even like this, how could he tell her that her father died in function after he was sure that the mission will be a failure? For him, it was like he killed him by himself.
At the end of the day, Altraya could calmly speak about her father, she was talking with nostalgia about his greatness. They even smiled after talking about how the general terrified Ulrich when they were younger.
When she felt ready, Altraya stood up and they left the place. During the trip to the palace, they crossed a group of soldiers.
They were coming back from the front. This vision was the worst Arja ever saw. The group was wounded, some men lost an arm or a leg, and some of them were skinless. She saw one of them attached to another with a rope, following the group and keeping his two eyes in his hands.
The group was walking slowly, letting time for everybody in the city to see them. Children stopped to play, the street became silent and we could only hear the sweet sound of birds contrasting with this terrible fact. The kingdom was at war and people were suffering. The main city was far from the battles and, except for the economic impact, most people had no idea what was happening.
