Capítulo 1: The Black Sphere; The Rise of Eclipse

Chapter 1: The Selection Process

The sun was relentless, hanging high over Parris Island, South Carolina, as rows of fresh Marines stood at attention. Sweat trickled down their faces, but their stances were unwavering—backs straight, eyes forward. Among them stood Selena Vega, her chin lifted with pride, the crisp edges of her dress blues immaculate. She was a Lance Corporal now, graduating with honors, a distinction that few achieved. The Marine Corps had transformed her from a determined recruit into a warrior, and the pride radiating from her dark brown eyes was unmistakable.

The commanding officer's voice echoed across the parade deck.

"Lance Corporal Vega!"

Selena stepped forward with a sharp salute, her heart pounding as the officer pinned the ribbon for Honor Graduate onto her uniform. As she returned to her place, her mind raced with memories of the grueling weeks that had led to this moment—long marches through swamps, hours of grueling drills, and the mental battles she fought every day to stay strong. She had earned this, every second of it.

After the ceremony, Selena found herself surrounded by family and fellow Marines. Her mother, Rosa, wrapped her in a fierce hug, tears streaming down her face.

"You did it, mija," Rosa whispered. "I'm so proud of you."

Selena smiled, her voice steady. "It's just the beginning, mamá."

The Letter That Changed Everything

A few weeks later, back at Camp Pendleton, Selena was finishing a morning run along the coastal cliffs when she was summoned to her CO's office. The summons was unexpected. As she entered, she found Lieutenant Colonel Daniels waiting, his expression unreadable. Beside him stood a man in a crisp suit with a Pentagon insignia on his lapel.

"Lance Corporal Vega," Daniels began, "you've caught the attention of some very important people."

The man in the suit stepped forward, his voice authoritative yet measured. "My name is Agent Michael Carter. I'm here on behalf of the Pentagon and the Commandant of the Marine Corps. We've been observing your performance, not just in boot camp but throughout your physical assessments and tactical simulations. You've exceeded every expectation."

Selena remained at attention, her mind racing. "Thank you, sir."

Agent Carter leaned in slightly. "We're assembling a team—something new, something dangerous. You would be the first woman ever to attempt the Special Operations program. It's a one-in-a-million opportunity, but it's also the most challenging path a Marine can take. Are you ready for that, Lance Corporal?"

The room fell silent, the weight of the offer hanging in the air. Selena's pulse quickened, but she didn't hesitate.

"Yes, sir. I'm ready."

Daniels nodded, a rare smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "Good. Report to the Special Operations training facility at zero five hundred tomorrow. Dismissed."

Chapter 1: A Night of Reflection

The moon hung high over Parris Island, bathing the barracks in a soft, silver glow. The air was thick with the humid warmth of a Southern night, and the scent of salt lingered from the nearby marshes. Selena Vega, now a freshly minted Lance Corporal, stood alone on the training field. She had graduated with honors that morning, the Marine Corps emblem pinned proudly on her uniform, yet she found herself restless, drawn to the quiet solitude of the open field.

She closed her eyes and let the night wrap around her, inhaling deeply. Her mind drifted back to Arturo Vega, her father, the man whose spirit carried her through every grueling day of boot camp. He had been a legend in the Marine Corps, enlisting at just seventeen during the Vietnam War. Arturo was more than a Marine—he was a warrior, a hero who had earned the Medal of Honor and a Purple Heart. The stories of his bravery had echoed through her childhood, each one more awe-inspiring than the last.

Arturo had single-handedly taken out an elite VC sniper unit that lay in wait for his platoon. He went off the grid, moving silently through the jungle, his body blending into the shadows. He was wounded in the firefight, yet he survived, dragging his brothers in arms to safety. It was the stuff of legend, but to Selena, it was simply her father's way.

Yet, she knew the cost. Vietnam had left its scars, not just the visible ones but the invisible ones too. The war followed him like a shadow, and when the doctors told him that Agent Orange had likely left him sterile, he thought the war had taken even more. Then, in 1987, Selena was born—a miracle baby. Arturo never let her forget how special she was.

She could still hear his voice, deep and steady, guiding her through the lessons he believed were vital:

"Always be aware of your surroundings."

"Trust your instincts."

"Know how to survive off the land."

By the time she could walk, Arturo had already begun teaching her the essentials—how to build a fire, track game, shoot with precision. She was his pride and joy, and everything he taught her came from a place of fierce love and devotion.

But the joy was short-lived. He passed away a week after her high school graduation in 2005, his body finally succumbing to the years of battle, both in Vietnam and within himself. He had seen her off to enlist in the Marine Corps but wasn't there to witness her achievements. His absence had been a heavy weight on her heart ever since.

As Selena opened her eyes and stared into the distance, the tears that welled up didn't fall. She stood tall, shoulders squared, her father's spirit ever-present. "I made it, Dad," she whispered. "I'm a Marine now. Just like you."

Her reflection was not one of sadness but of purpose. Arturo Vega's teachings had given her more than survival skills—they had given her the resilience to face the impossible, the strength to endure the unthinkable, and the heart to lead when others would falter.

The next challenge loomed ahead: Special Ops training. It would push her beyond her limits, but she knew one thing for certain—her father's spirit would carry her through, just as it had in boot camp. She could almost feel him beside her, his hand on her shoulder, steady and unyielding.

Tonight was a night of reflection, a quiet promise to the man who had shaped her into the warrior she was becoming. Tomorrow, she would rise with the sun, ready to face the next challenge. But tonight, she honored him. And she knew, wherever he was, Arturo Vega was watching, proud as ever.
