Capítulo 31: xxxi

They say that fire burns brighter in the darkness and Atticus was one of the darkest shadows in Queensland amongst the elders of the wolves. People always thought twice about him because he was sneaky and deceitful. What fire doesn't destroy, it hardens and Atticus's heart was hard as a rock or some might think that he didn't have a heart.

I never liked Atticus, that day when he tried to embarrass me in the market, I saw a glimpse of the real devil that he was. The man, who forcefully manipulates people and breaks them down into nothing, permanently driving them away. Take Paul and Cleo's mother as an example. My grandfather told me that arranged marriages were very popular back when my parents were young and it was traditional. Atticus was heavily involved in tradition since he tried to force his own daughter to marry Marcus's father, who was at least 10 years older than her.

My grandfather said that Atticus's controlling behavior drove his daughter mad until one day she disappeared leaving behind two children that she had with a man that she had loved, who also disappeared.

I felt sorry for Cleo, who was still labeled as missing. Melody had told me that Cleo was just a child and it doesn't take a genius to figure out the type of relationship between her and Atticus. He abused that girl, may not have physically, but emotionally and mentally which is identified as the worst type of abuse. Paul tried to protect his sister but it wasn't enough.

My grandfather was right about Mateo's plan. Atticus was his test dummy, the person who he was going to blame everything on, and Mateo did just that. People were getting suspicious and they wanted answers, so he gave them one, a very dramatic and emotional one.

It's been a day since everyone found out about Marcus's sudden death and although everyone was talking about it, the day ran pretty smoothly as if it was any other day. The market was flooded as usual and all the vendors had made an appearance including Atticus, who seemed unfazed by Marcus's death and his granddaughter's disappearance.

Rosalie and Melody had also made an appearance with the twins and Paul watching from a distance in their wolf forms. The tension was high for some reason, it was as if something was waiting to happen and it did.

Halfway through serving customers and interacting, there was suddenly a shocking sight that made everyone stop what they were doing. Walking through the crowds as the people parted ways for them to pass, were the infamous siblings, who recently lost their father. No one had seen the siblings since their father had died and seeing them now sparked everyone's interest and attention.

Everyone watched as the siblings walked to Atticus's booth with different expressions on their faces. It was both intimidating and pitiful. Mateo held his sister's hand with a blank expression on his face, while his sister clingy onto his arm as her skin looked incredibly pale with red swollen eyes and tear-stained cheeks.

"Everyone seemed to hold their breaths as they stopped before turning to Atticus, who looked around in confusion before looking back at the dreadful-looking siblings. Atticus waited for something to happen and that's when Cora broke down and began sobbing causing her brother to pull her into his arms, shielding her face against his chest as he glared at Atticus, whose eyes widened at the girl's sudden action.

"What do you have to say for yourself?" Mateo asked in a calm tone that sent shivers down Atticus's spine. Everyone was confused by Mateo's sudden statement, it sounded shameful and they didn't understand what Atticus had done to feel shameful.

"YOU KILLED MY FATHER!" Cora yelled as gasps filled the air and the color from Atticus's face drained. Everyone was shocked and although everyone knew that Atticus could not be trusted, they didn't think he would go and kill the Alpha.

Atticus turned into a stuttering fool as he raised his hands in surrender, "I-I didn't kill the Alpha, I-I swear, s-she's lying," he said in fear as everyone looked at him in disgust and disbelief, "Are you calling my sister a liar?" Mateo asked as Atticus tried looking for his grandchildren, but they were nowhere to be found.

"An autopsy was immediately done on my father's body and they found wolfsbane poison in his stomach along with his favorite soup that you offered to make and you sent your granddaughter to deliver it, where is she hiding?" Mateo confessed as Atticus went pale, "Y-You! You bastard! You set me up, it was all you, you used me!" Atticus yelled as everyone looked at him as if he was crazy.

Rosalie shook her head, as she watched Cora secretly smirk against Mateo's chest, "Are you seeing this?" She asked through the mate bond, "Yeah, Benjamin was right," Genesis said as Rosalie frowned at the sight of Mateo's dogs grabbing Atticus by his arms before dragging him out from his stall and dropping him in front of Mateo, who looked down at him.

"Where's Paul?" She asked, knowing what was about to take place, "He left, Gio went after him to make sure he doesn't do anything stupid," Genesis replied as Rosalie hummed, "Maybe you sure get out from there, I don't want you to see what's about to happen," he said as Rosalie looked around feeling eyes on her before she caught Blake, who stared at her with a blank expression on his face.

"I can't, I have eyes on me," she said as Genesis growled in her head, "Who?" He asked as she avoid Blake's stare, "It's Blake, he has his eyes dead set on me," she replied before a cry-out grabbed her attention.

Mateo's goons began punching and kicking Atticus as he cried out in pain. It was pretty brutal as Atticus was too old to fight back, "Paul! He-lp me!!!" He yelled, but neither Paul nor anyone came to help him. Everyone was terrified as they watched Atticus get severely beaten until he was now unconscious, but the beating didn't stop. Children cried as their mothers covered their eyes and ears, while they hid in their spouse's chest.

"Stay where you are Rosalie, I'm on my way," Genesis said as Rosalie held Melody, who cried in her shoulder, while she stared blankly at Mateo, who caught her eyes, "I'm here," she whispered before tearing her eyes away from Mateo, who clenched his jaw.

Mateo was happy that he was able to catch Rosalie's eyes, he wanted her to know that he was doing all of this for her, but as she looked away, something snapped within him. His eyes darkened as he saw Genesis walk up from behind her before wrapping his arm around her waist.

"MINE!" He thought, watching the way they interacted with each other. The way she relaxed in his arms, the way her eyes lit up when she saw him, the way she smiled at him, the way she touched him, moaned his name.

That night, Mateo had gone into the forest to clear his head, when he heard the moaning of the girl that he was obsessed with. Following the sound, and to Mateo's dislike, he saw, no, watched as Genesis had his way with Rosalie, and it angered him. He believed that she belonged to him, everything that she does to them, should only be done to him. His jealousy began to grow into anger and rage causing something to trigger off inside of him.

Everyone watched as Mateo pushed the two guys away before grabbing Atticus by his neck. With his eyes locked with the two mates, he gritted through his teeth as he squeezed the neck of an unconscious Atticus before twisting sharply as a loud snap was heard causing people to scream and watch in horror as Mateo dropped Atticus's dead body on the floor.

"I need everyone to understand something, I'm the new Alpha and this is an example for anyone who crosses me or thinks that they can disrespect me, I don't care if you're old or a little child, male or female, stay in your place," he said as his voice echoed in the silent place.

"Oh and one more thing," he said with his finger raised before he turned to face Melody's tent, "Rosalie, you're mine," he said, flashing his red eyes before smiling to show his deadly teeth, "And I'm coming for you."

...

I'm going to kill him," Giovanni said as we all gathered in the living room, "You're not going kill anyone, Gio, just calm down, and where's Paul?" I asked, watching as Giovanni paced in front of me, while Genesis sat beside me on the couch's arm and Melody stood behind my grandfather. We were all left feeling emotionally heavy after witnessing what had happened down at the market. I couldn't unsee it and Mateo wouldn't remove Atticus's body, which left everyone mentally scarred.

Paul was nowhere to be and his sister was still missing. But honestly, after seeing Mateo brutally murder Atticus, I wouldn't be surprised if she was already dead, "I don't know, he just took off, maybe went to look for sister, I don't know, and frankly, I don't care, I just want to kill Mateo," he gritted as Kamari's voice appeared in my head.

"Calm him down, Rosalie, now is not the time for him to go on a rampage," she said as I sighed, "Come here, Gio," I softly beckoned, spreading my legs as he looked at me before sighing heavily, coming to sit in between my legs before laying back against my chest as I wrapped my arms around him, "So what are we going to do?" He asked as we turned to my grandfather, who sat silently, staring into space.

"Grandpa?" I softly called out, snapping him out of his thoughts as he looked at me with an unrecognizable look in his eyes, "Huh?" He hummed as I was scared to open my mouth already expecting a response, "What do we do?" I asked as my eyes glossed over as he stared at me with a knowing look, "You prepare yourselves," he mumbled before turning his wheelchair and began wheeling away as Melody looked back at us with tired eyes before following after my grandfather.

I sighed shakingly as tears threatened to escape from my eyes. My heart pounded against my chest as the twins tensed up around me, "Hey, there's no need for that, calm down," Genesis said as Giovanni got off of me to kneel, "Talk to us, tell us what's wrong?" Giovanni said as he grabbed my hand. I looked up just as a tear fell from my eye, "This was what my father was talking about, this is the storm," I said as Giovanni frowned, "What are you talking about?" He asked as I sniffled, "I had a dream and my parents were there, they said that this would happen and that one of us is going to die," I said as more tears streamed down my face.

"That person is not going to be you," Giovanni said as his voice dropped by a few octaves, "Grandpa thinks it's going to be him," I said as his face falls, "No one is going to die," he said with anger laced in his tone, "We don't know that!" I exclaimed, grabbing his face as he shook his head with tears gathering in his eyes.

"I refuse, I refuse to lose anyone else, I'll die before anyone of you dies, so fine, if your father said one of us is going to die, then it'll be me," he said as I shook my head, "No, you nor Genesis can't die, I don't know how I would live with myself," he scoffed, "And I'll be damned if I let any of my family die," he said, making his mind up as I stared at him with trembling lips, "You don't understand- Genesis, you saw what Mateo did out there, he said that he's coming for me," I pleaded while looking up at him as he cooed before gently grabbing my chin.

"Then we'll be waiting."
