CHAPTER 36: THE ENVOY (II)
Riele and I watch as the party is welcomed by the mercenaries. I should have known. The Okutake family is notorious for their business as mercenaries. For some reason I just didn't put it together. Correction, they're not being welcomed. They're the ones in charge by the looks of things.
The guy with the long narrow face appears to be ordering around everybody. One thing I can't understand is why couldn't I sense them? I'm pretty sure I was concentrating on monitoring a wide area for any movements. It's like they just showed up out of nowhere.
The guy with the handle bar moustache leads the cape guy and super model into the only decent looking building in the entire village. The rest of the Beastkin join the mercenaries, now that I look closer, their clothes look the same as the mercenaries. What the hell is wrong with me!?
Anyway I'm assuming that's where they're keeping Jake Davids. It seems like the only logical location. All the other buildings are rundown and appear to be on the verge of collapsing. So that's my target but things don't end there. I need to somehow liberate an entire village of people while facing off against people I don't stand a chance against.
I don't think I could beat that skinny guy and he seems to be one of the lakkies. This might prove to be my undoing yet.
I already have a few ideas of going about things but the numbers are simply too much.
"Mister!!" Riele suddenly calls me. I turn to face her but she's been dragged away by some kind of vine coming from the bushes. What the hell?!

"Damn... my head is killing me aahhhaah!" My hands immediately reach for my head. I've got a fucking killer headache. Huh? What the fuck!? "Where am I!?" I ask in desperation as I struggle to stand up. I notice I'm in some kind of dark and damp room with metal bars caging me inside. It's cold as fuck and the air smells like shit.
"You got captured." A voice suddenly answers me. I turn to the direction of the owner but it's hard to see with this very dim light coming from the moon.
The Moon!? It was just barely passed noon. How did it get so fucking late!?
No, think! I just need to calm down. Obviously I was captured but this doesn't make any sense. I should have been able to sense it if someone was behind us. There can only be two possibilities, either someone can block me from sensing them or... they were simply too fast for me to pick up on it. From watching that skinny guy it's certainly possible. I'm not in tune with my instincts like a certain Goku or Piccolo. It only shows how much I still suck at this Ki thing. Maybe I would have been better off with Chakra since I actually know more about it's uses.
For Ki there are simply too many alliteration that I can't tell which is which. I mean is it even Ki or Chi or Qi. There are so many variations to it. I'm sure the one I'm having is the same with Dragon Ball so I remember it being 'Ki' in the manga.
So anyway back to the matter at hand. I've been captured. The chains on my legs and wrists is evidence enough. The chains are firm, tight and strong but I can easily break out of them. Breaking out of them is not the best move at this time. I'm sorry Riele but I'm afraid our agreement is over. I cannot leave this place while worrying about you. That's a change of plans. My priority now is to secure the envoy and take him back to Fort Defal to meet up with Helena and Freya.
"So who's captured me?" I ask the shadowy figure in the cell next to mine.
"Just a small time group of idiots." He answers. Well I think it's a he based on the voice.
"I wouldn't exactly call the Okutake Family small time." I retord.
"They might be big time to fools like you but they're just ants to where I'm from." He answers.
"That might be but you're still here aren't you?"
"Not really. They used the same kind of chains on you on me. With these things on you can't use a drop of mana." No wonder they seem fragile to me. I don't have or use mana. Nor do I need to use mana.
"How long you been here?"
"Few days maybe. They try their weak ass magic on me to spill the beans but it's nothing I haven't experienced before."
So he's got experience and magic. To me this guys seem very top tier but he talks of them like children. Either he's crazy stupid or to him they are just children.
"I never got your name, I'm Eto Shapan." I continue the conversation.
"Shapan Huh? Never heard of such a family name. I'm Davids, Jake Davids." He answers.
Oh Shit! Well that was easy. That only lives the escape. No no no no. I can't be in a rush. I cannot take things as they are. This people are idiots. I can't be going head on like a fool forever. The people who have captured me are my enemies in a sense. I don't really have anything for or against them. It's just they're trying to get in the way of my mission so let's treat them as enemies.
Right now I'm in the camp of my enemies. Meaning I can get as much information out of them as possible. Like the saying goes. I must know my enemy. I've made up my mind. Let's see what they got for me. What their plans are? I can decide on a proper course of action after that.
Anyway back to my cell neighbour.
"Davids? I've heard quite a lot about that name." I feint slight ignorance.
"Of course you have. My family is playing at the big boys table. Unlike these fools." He boasts. The big boys table huh? Well that certainly makes things more interesting.
"The big boy's? Meaning your family is very notorious?" I inquire.
"The Davids House is a very important noble family of the Vermilion Empire. I would say we are notorious! Very Notorious!" He seems to have taken offence to that. It only proves my hunch correct. A proud noble such as himself will be very generous to his savior. For now let's just let him thing of me as just a fellow prisoner.
"Well that explains why you're still alive. No one would dare try to openly seek war with the empire." I tease him a bit. It certainly does explain it. Either that or they're planning to use his death as a way to blame the Detalia House. While also proving themselves innocent of any wrongdoing against the empire.
"Kill me? Surely you jest! Who would openly seek the wrath of a force such as the Vermilion Empire!? Who could be so idiotic and blinded by fullish ambitions!" The man snapped. I can just make out his silhouette in the moon light.
"You call it blind ambition but we call it reaching for our destiny." A voice suddenly answers.
I turn towards the owner of the voice. It's that long faced dude again. Behind him is that hot chick in the silky dress and what appears to be her twin in a red cape. What is he, an idiot? The custom red leather suit does look dope though. Lastly it's the skinny wolfkin from the other day holding a lantern. How do this people show up without me sensing them? They can't all be that fast. I'm missing something I'm sure of it.
"Who are you!?" Jake demands in a prideful voice.
"My name, Mr Davids, is Toshiba Okutake. These are my niece and nephew Toyasaru and Toshiro." He answers in one of those cool monologue like villain voices.
Interesting names though. They sound Japanese to me but I should have guessed from Okutake. So he reveals himself finally. At least now I have a name.
"Is this who you work for!?" I ask the short wolfkin.
"I am very glad to finally meet you Mr Shapan." Toshiba talks as the other guy remains quiet.
So he knows my name huh? I expected as much from our brief encounter.
"Why is the Okutake Family trying to provoke a war with us?" Jake asks in a weirdly calm voice.
"We're not!" Toshiro answers instead.
"My nephew is right. We don't want a fight against the empire." Toshiba adds.
I'm guessing that's not the truth. I can sense him hiding something.
"I don't have anything against you! So why kidnap me?" I demand an obvious answer.
"Neither do I! You just happen to be working on the wrong side of history." He answers casually. Ain't that something? This dude believes he's some kind of revolutionary. How stupid can you get?
"So if you don't want a war with us, why are you keeping me here?" Jake asks. His voice is still weirdly calm.
"We will release you but only after we've completed our plan!" Toshiro speaks again.
Like I thought. They're planning to use him. They're probably planning to kill him and put the blame on the royal family. It's just not the time yet. Hmmm? Well that's weird. I think I recognize some one. Why am I sensing his Ki signature here in the building? Damn it! It makes so much sense now.
