Day after day, at the Round Ecruteak Gym, the same actions were repeated every day. In the blink of an eye, half a month had passed. The life was supposed to be dull and boring, but to Cain, every day was fulfilling because he could see the slight progress of his Pokémon.
Ditto went through basic training every day, mainly focusing on speed exercises.
Gastly's "Shadow Hypnosis" training did not progress very quickly. The range and power of its Night Shade defense, the speed of using Hypnosis, and the ability to multitask all needed to be strengthened.
The five Shuppet became Gastly's training partners, and with daily practice, Gastly had somewhat mastered "Shadow Hypnosis." Its move that relied on Night Shade to drain life energy became more and more proficient.
It seemed that the power of "eating" was stronger than its own.
Raikou had not been idle for the past half month either. Duskull and Machop were also making progress, and just the day before, they were able to use Foresight before the Gastly army launched their attack. This was a historic leap.
The first floor of the Brass Tower, after half a month of challenges, still hadn't been conquered, but success was getting closer and closer.
After consolidating their ultimate moves once more, Cain and Raikou challenged the first floor of the Brass Tower for the eighteenth time.
"How confident are you this time?" Raikou asked.
"I won't come out if we lose again."
Cain coldly replied, and walked in with Ditto and Gastly.
Raikou snorted, "So confident," and followed closely.
Two Haunters and twenty Gastly, they had been battling them every day for over half a month, and were already very familiar with each other.
"Foresight."
Raikou called out without any hesitation.
"Ditto, transform. Gastly, cover with Night Shade."
Cain knew that the key to winning this battle was to successfully use Foresight, so he didn't dare to neglect Machop and Duskull.
Ditto quickly transformed into a Haunter and threw out two Shadow Balls. Transforming into Haunter every day for half a month had raised Ditto's understanding of Ghost-types to a higher level.
The two Haunters engaged by Ditto were temporarily unable to manage the tactical command of the Gastly army.
The Gastlys closest to Machop and Duskull in the army initiated their attacks first, extending their tongues and whipping them. Cain's Gastly conjured a vast Night Shade to block the attacks that were focused on Machop and Duskull.
In just an instant,
Machop and Duskull fired four beams of light, illuminating the entire first floor of the Brass Tower without leaving a single blind spot.
All the Gastlys were suddenly materialized, the Gastly army were caught off guard and panicked by the sudden exposure to such strong light.
"Now's the time, attack!"
At Cain's command, Gastly led the Night Shade like a dark cloud, swallowing the five nearby enemy Gastly directly.
Absorbing their life energy.
At this moment, two Haunters sensed the situation was unfavorable and hurriedly abandoned Ditto to provide support. However, Ditto's sense of duty would not be abandoned just because the Haunters fled. Shadow Ball was thrown out like a rapid-fire cannon, leaving Haunter with no choice but to stay behind and fight with Ditto.
Duskull was using Shadow Sneak to attack a Gastly when a Haunter's support arrived just in time. A Shadow Ball shattered Duskull's shadow, forcing it to retreat.
After successfully providing support, the Haunter organized a group of Gastly to surround the three Pokémon.
"They want to form a Night Shade formation. They plan to disperse Gastly's move at any cost."
Cain directed Raikou, and although Raikou was reluctant, he knew that once the Night Shade formation was complete, it would be impossible to break through the layers of illusions with their current strength.
Without further ado.
Raikou directly commanded Machop and Duskull to launch close-range attacks.
The ultimate Ghost-type moves had limited damage to Machop, so it stepped forward and used Karate Chop directly against two Gastly.
The two Gastly didn't even have time to react, as they were already under the effect of Foresight.
They took Machop's powerful blow and fell.
However, Duskull was originally slow and didn't dare to withstand the ultimate moves. It just assumed an offensive posture, attracting some Gastly's attention, but in fact, it didn't have the ability to approach the Gastly army.
The Night Shade created by Cain's Gastly suddenly expanded.
Cain nodded.
As expected, the life energy of the five Gastly that were just swallowed had been mostly consumed, and they fell from the dark cloud of Night Shade.
That took care of seven Gastly.
Under these circumstances, Haunter was unable to organize the Night Shade formation and simply gave up.
Faced with several Gastly, Duskull, which was already somewhat stretched, became Haunter's primary target.
Haunter threw two Shadow Balls, and Duskull's strength had already declined. How could it avoid Haunter's rapid-fire attack? It was knocked to the ground.
Haunter followed up with a Shadow Punch.
The Duskull, under continuous attack from Gastly, was on the verge of collapsing.
However, it had to be admitted that Raikou was quite skilled in Pokémon training. Just as Gastly was about to triumph over Duskull, Duskull retaliated with a dying burst of energy, using Shadow Sneak. A huge dark claw emerged from behind Gastly, striking it down.
"Gastly, go."
As a commanding figure, Gastly had now exposed a huge weakness, which Cain could not let slip by.
Gastly was engulfed by the Night Shade, which descended like a dark cloud.
However, Gastly's appetite had reached its limit, and it could no longer absorb the enemy Gastly's life energy. It could only control it.
On Cain and Raikou's side, Duskull had lost its fighting ability, Ditto and another Haunter were locked in a stalemate, and the remaining Haunter was under the control of Night Shade. There were still thirteen Gastly to contend with.
"Shadow Hypnosis."
Cain had no choice but to use this move. How could a single Machop hope to battle thirteen formidable Gastly?
That was a mere pipe dream, even if the timing for using "Shadow Hypnosis" was not ideal.
Only six Gastly were attacking Cain's Gastly, which was shrouded in Night Shade, in an attempt to save their comrade. As these six Gastly were in the midst of their attack, red light waves suddenly spread from within the dark mist. Caught by the move, the six Gastly's eyelids grew heavy, and they soon succumbed to drowsiness, falling one by one.
Naturally, the Haunter trapped within the Night Shade could not escape the penetrating hypnotic light waves either and was thrown out by Gastly after falling asleep.
With seven Gastly left to face Machop, Machop could only take a defensive stance. Witnessing Machop's immense strength, the Gastly maintained a considerable distance, rendering Machop unable to get close.
However, Gastly could not use "Hypnosis" in this position either, as the seven Gastly were not looking in its direction. Hypnosis primarily worked through eye contact; if their backs were turned, the technique was useless.
Machop was on the verge of collapsing, and if Gastly abandoned its Night Shade protection to attack directly, it would be at its limit handling two Gastly, let alone seven. Victory seemed impossible.
The battle had come this far, and success seemed within reach, but Cain found himself at an impasse, unsure of what to do next.
