These guys smell opportunities faster than a hound, Kane thought as the knocking continued outside his door.
But he didn't rush to open the door after all they wanted him. He calmly ate his breakfast instead, letting them knock for a while longer.
"Open the door, we need to talk," came an impatient voice from outside.
"It's not convenient for me right now. You'll have to wait," Kane shouted back, deliberately raising his voice.
After finishing breakfast, Kane sat for a bit, not in any hurry to get up. When he was ready, he packed up his things, placed ditto on his head, and finally opened the door, stepping out and shutting it behind him.
"What do you want?" he asked, looking at the three well-dressed men standing before him.
Inwardly, Kane felt only disgust for these "righteous gentlemen."
"Hello, little brother," one of them began with an unctuous tone, "We're from the orphanage. We understand you're the last member of your family and that you're under ten years old. According to the city's regulations, children like you must be taken into care by the orphanage. I can tell you all about the many benefits of—"
"No need," Kane interrupted him flatly. He had no interest in hearing another word. After all, having been to an orphanage before, he knew full well it was far from the paradise they were about to describe.
The three men found themselves at a loss in the face of Kane's cold demeanor, speechless and embarrassed. Kane pulled out his work permit.
"I've got a job," he said. "I don't need to go to the orphanage. You can leave now."
One of the men squinted at the card skeptically. "We'll need you to come with us to verify the authenticity of this work permit."
Kane scoffed. "And who gave you that authority? You know very well you don't authority to do that I've got work to do. Now, goodbye!"
Without giving them another chance to respond, Kane walked away, leaving the three men standing there.

As Kane rode his bicycle through the streets of Ecruteak City, he pondered what to do next. The work permit he carried was from a shady shell company, and sooner or later, the orphanage staff would catch on. He figured he had maybe two weeks before they realized the truth, which left him no time to relax.
Kane spent the rest of the day wandering around the city, realizing just how difficult things were. He was right finding a proper job was no easy task. The city's laws required one to be at least ten years old to hold a valid work permit, and while some small factories didn't care about permits, they weren't going to hand him one either. It was too risky for them, especially if they suspected he might be sent to expose their illegal activities.
Thus, Kane's work card was essentially useless. In no time, the authorities would catch the shell company for employing child labor, and Kane would lose his shield.
Another day passed, and Kane found himself feeling discouraged, pushing his bike along aimlessly.
He didn't dare go home early, thinking the orphanage staff might be waiting there for him.
Walking without purpose, he felt like a ghost drifting through the streets.
"Hey, Kane!"
He suddenly heard someone call his name, startling him. He paused for a moment, puzzled. He didn't have any friends, so who could it be?
The voice called out again from behind him.
Turning around, Kane saw a familiar face. "You're...?"
"It's me, Ryuusei, the apprentice from the Ecruteak Gym! You gave me a hundred poke dollars the other day, remember?"
Right, the apprentice from the other day.
"What do you want?" Kane asked.
"Well, I've been feeling kind of bad about taking your money and not doing anything for you in return," Ryuusei said, looking somewhat guilty.
"You don't owe me anything," Kane replied curtly. He had no desire to be involved with this person.
"Don't be so quick to brush me off," Ryuusei protested. "I've been thinking about it, and I've got some good news for you."
Kane was skeptical that any good news could come his way, but before he could say anything, Ryuusei continued.
"My master, Chiyama, is holding tryouts to take on new apprentices at the Ecruteak Gym. There are only two spots, and registration opens tomorrow. The trials will take place over the next three days."
Kane felt a surge of excitement. Heaven wasn't forsaking him after all!
Kane had always planned his moves carefully, and he'd already been to the Ecruteak Gym once. He never intended to return, thinking there would be no need, but now it seemed like he had almost missed out on a golden opportunity.
If he could secure a position as an apprentice at the gym, he'd have the prestigious Ecruteak Gym backing him, and the orphanage would never dare make a move against him. His problems would be solved in one stroke.
Feeling a weight lift off his shoulders, Kane's mood instantly lightened. He almost felt euphoric.
No longer holding back his excitement, Kane even invited Ryuusei to dinner, knowing that petty, greedy people like him could be useful later on. If Kane managed to get into the gym, he might have plenty of ways to use someone like Ryuusei.
It turned out to be the best meal Kane had eaten since his rebirth.

Out of the orphanage, Kane now shifted his focus toward the training of Ariados and Drapion.
In his previous life, the most successful research he conducted on poison-type Pokémon involved these two: Ariados and Drapion. He had tried many different methods, experienced countless failures, and experimented on nearly all poison-type Pokémon.
In the end, he found that only Ariados and Drapion had the potential to be cultivated into Pokémon capable of wielding highly toxic venom. The key was in their genetic composition, which was more favorable for poison training than any other poison-type Pokémon. However, the breeding process took multiple generations worth of wealth.
Ariados had the largest poison sac of any poison-type Pokémon allowing it to store large amounts of venom. Meanwhile, Drapion had the most venom-secreting organs, with venom coming from its pincers, teeth, mouth, and tail.
However, even with these advantages, it took four generations of careful breeding to perfect and stabilize their poison sacs. Once this was done, Ariados and Drapion would be capable of consuming toxic orbs refined from the poison sacs of seven specific poison-type Pokémon.
These seven Pokémon were the key maternal Pokémon in the genetic group, whose poison needed to be consumed gradually to enhance the poison sacs.
Among all the venomous Pokémon, only Salazzle's venom sac was off-limits. Its corrosive fire poison was fatal to any poison-type Pokémon that tried to ingest it, a lesson Kane had learned the hard way in his past life when he lost a prized Ariados to his greed.
Now, with limited time and resources, Kane knew he couldn't afford to focus on such complex breeding experiments. Successfully breeding a high-tier Ariados or Drapion would take at least three years, and for now, his focus would have to be on securing his position at the Ecruteak Gym.
Kane already had a plan in mind.
He would target his benefactor from his past life, Mr. Tatsuo, the owner of a cultivation house in Thunder Town.
He would offer Tatsuo part of his genome cultivation method as payment. Of course, Kane would hold back the most crucial part of his research for himself.
But before that, Kane needed to visit the black market. Two of the maternal Pokémon he needed weren't native to the Johto region, and he would have to try his luck in the black market to obtain them.
