"Is this Charlize?"
Christian couldn't believe the girl's performance.
Though he hadn't been able to confirm it yet, the blond girl, despite her obvious immaturity, was supposedly the future Evil Queen. However, even if that was the case, and even though she would go on to win an Oscar, Christian had read comments suggesting that Charlize Theron's acting skills were not top-notch.
Starting as a model, she carried the common problems of model-born actors, with relatively rigid and limited facial expressions. Compared to actresses like Meryl Streep or rising stars like Jennifer Lawrence, she appeared lacking in confidence. In the film "Burning Plain", she was reportedly overshadowed by Jennifer, despite Christian never having watched it.
Thankfully, in "Snow White and the Huntsman," she had the chance to act alongside Kristen Stewart, who was also a newcomer. Thus, Charlize Theron didn't seem to be a naturally gifted actor, and her future improvement depended on time.
However, the blond girl's performance truly surprised Christian.
Christian had seen the old version of Spider-Man, the one not directed by James Cameron. The iconic scene of Spider-Man hanging upside down and kissing Mary Jane in the rain was famous. Charlize's performance, though virtual, evoked something different, something more captivating and beautiful.
Even though the kiss scene added a touch of color to the movie, it was challenging to shoot, especially a virtual one. Kissing the air might seem silly, even for someone as beautiful as Charlize. Yet, the blonde girl's performance left Christian in awe. It felt as if he could see the non-existent Spider-Man hanging upside down in the air, lost in the excitement of kissing the girl next door, Mary Jane.
"Should I hail a cab for a three-day farewell to reality and admire this? Something just doesn't feel right"
Charlize's unexpected acting abilities left Christian in lament, but he understood that it was more likely Alexis's acting skills at play. After all, the current beauty in front of him was not truly Charlize; it was "Alexis" they had to deal with. While Charlize remained conscious, her role was limited to providing emotions and imagination for this performance.
Yet, it was this "just" that astonished him even more.
Christian knew that despite his proficiency in various magical knowledge, he lacked the experience to deal with demons and ghosts, having just crossed over to an era where he could practice spells. However, dealing with a ghost-like Alexis, who could possess a living person, was a daunting task. To ensure victory, Christian opted for traps. Luring the ghost into these traps, though, was a tricky problem.
Much like the previous interaction with Charlize, a ghost at Alexis's level wasn't inherently powerful. Unlike his master, the Old Ghost, Alexis was usually unaware and filled with negative emotions, making it chaotic. Such a ghost, in this state, wasn't inherently threatening. If one could maintain a peaceful and optimistic mindset, avoid generating negative emotions, and refrain from triggering the ghost, even if possessed, they could stay safe. However, this was easier said than done. Maintaining a positive outlook for an extended period was challenging, and those capable of such mental discipline were unlikely to produce negative emotions that attracted ghosts.
Therefore, in most cases, the safest approach was to exorcise the ghost. The problem Christian faced was that getting rid of Alexis required triggering the traps he'd set. But doing so would inevitably activate the unconscious ghost, allowing it to observe his plan and judge whether it was a trap. Alexis might not fall into the prearranged trap at all.
This is where Charlize came into play.
As instructed by Christian, Alexis took control of Charlize's body. It was as if Charlize's consciousness had been pushed to the background, becoming a deeper, vaguer, subconscious state akin to a ghost. In this state, her consciousness couldn't directly control the body, but it could influence it, subtly driving her actions.
For instance, Charlize's previous suicide was largely due to Alexis's interference in her subconscious. Charlize, while drunk, hadn't entirely lost control, but her already depressed mood was amplified by Alexis, leading to her suicide.
Christian planned to use this same principle. After the separation of Charlize's consciousness and Alexis, he aimed to subconsciously influence Alexis, who controlled her body, making her hallucinate to cooperate with the trap. This approach was challenging because Charlize had to stay awake, even while in a subconscious state.
Fortunately, even before crossing over to this era, Christian had researched ways to alter consciousness effectively using spells and had discovered drugs that could be combined with spells for remarkable effects. In one example, he used a sedative called hymenone to help Charlize fall asleep. Now, he used painkillers combined with his spells to keep her conscious even while possessed by a ghost.
On the premise of keeping Charlize's consciousness awake, Christian needed her to exert enough influence over the ghost controlling her body to make it hallucinate and step into the trap. This required Charlize's imagination and emotional control. It was a test of her skills as an actor, and Christian had prepared a plan B.
However, Charlize's acting abilities surprised him. She controlled her emotions and imagination effectively, causing Alexis to completely hallucinate, thinking she was at an audition, and walking into the trap. In some ways, her ability to control emotions and imagination was even more impressive than Alexis's acting skills.
Perhaps Charlize was better suited for roles that required mental and emotional depth. Despite her extraordinary beauty, her acting skills were a valuable asset. It was amusing, but as Marilyn Monroe had shown, even iconic figures could have their acting methods.
"Cut"
Although Christian was taken aback by Charlize's explosive acting skills, he didn't forget his role. In his script, he played the part of the casting director for the James Cameron version of "Spider-Man." Alexis had almost completed her performance, so he called for a stop and then put on a satisfied expression.
"Excellent, Alexis, you did exceptionally well. You're the best among all the actresses who auditioned today. The others were either fidgeting or couldn't stop giggling. What do they think this is? It's not a third-rate horror movie; it's a James Cameron film"
After a moment of thought, he waved his hand decisively.
"Never mind the games. I have a tight schedule with more auditions to conduct. Miss Alexis, I believe you're the perfect choice for the role of Mary Jane. I'd like to start negotiations for a contract with you if that's agreeable."
