“Funny,” I say to John. “Because I’ve never heard of you until now.” I scowl at him, not trusting the casual way he holds himself.
He chuckles lightly. “I’m not surprised. I try to keep myself under the radar. On the other hand, you were put on the map the second you got those new eyes of yours. A born alpha. I never thought I’d live to see the day. Your grandfather was one, your father’s father.”
I stare at him in shocked disbelief. “Then why wasn’t my father born an alpha?”
John shrugs. “Don’t know, but that was part of the reason he was so resentful of his father and why he tried so hard to become one. What he did after he gained his new status is why I left. That was eighteen years ago, but it feels like it was yesterday.”
My mom walks up beside me. “John? That name doesn’t sound familiar. You must’ve left before I met Nicolas. He never mentioned you.”
