As everyone began circulating and chewing, my doorbell rang. Thinking to myself I hope this isn’t Erica stopping by to be nosey because she sees Linda’s car out front, I looked out my peephole to see the next to last person I expected.

“I bet you are surprised to see me here,” Karen said, smiling and holding a covered dish in her hand.

Standing in the doorway, I replied, “You’re right. When I didn’t hear from you when I sent the invite I figured you were too busy to respond.”

I could have invited her in, after all she did bring food, but I wasn’t in the mood to just sweep away all the weeks without talking just because I knew what was in the pot was probably her grandmother’s potato salad.
