Capítulo 34: Work annoyances
Juliet was feeling frustrated. She had made no progress in the last two hours that she had been working or attempting to work. She had been listening between the audio recording she had managed to catch on her phone during her time at the club the night before and trying to compare it with the audio tapes that had been sent to her office that her boss had let her copy for reference. Thus far, she still could not distinguish who the voice belonged
She could tell that it was a male's voice, but from what she could tell, it didn't belong to either Richard or Daniel. Or if it did, they were speaking in a false tone of voice or using something to change their tone so that they wouldn't be recognized. Knowing that it was two men at least meant that for now she could discount any female works and Melissa from being suspects in the case.
Her headache hadn't gotten any better over time and in fact all the straining she was doing to hear was probably making it worse. The painkillers had dulled it and Juliet had been trying her best to drink water, but the throbbing refused to go away.
Puffing out her cheeks she laid back on the sofa. She didn't have time to waste as she needed to have something positive to report to her boss, but at this point it just felt as though she was wading water and not getting anywhere.
Her stomach was beginning to grumble as well, but she with her head, she didn't think that there was much of anything that she would be able to risk eating without making it worse, plus the looming feeling of nausea wasn't going away either.
Walter was a person of interest to her since he was one of the bouncers there and guards who kept an eye on the VIP area. He seemed to be well trusted by Daniel and from what she had found it, it seemed as though he had been working there for a few years already. She hadn't managed to catch a clip of his voice from that night since he hadn't been around her too much and although she tried, she couldn't trust her memory to enough to say whether the voice could belong to him or not.
She was going to have to find an excuse to be able to spend more time at the club before the weekend. She was sure that once her and Richard started working she would get familiar with more of the guys who worked or frequented the club and there would probably be opportunities if she did it right to talk with them or at least be involved in conversations close enough that her phone would be able to catch their voices.
She groaned as she put her hands over her face, what she really needed right now as more money or rather, her office did. They hadn't been around for very long, but their revenue had mostly remained unchanging since she had been there.
They never got a lot of cases which she wanted to plan on her boss, Carl because of the way he handed potential clients and the prices that he tended to charge for jobs despite the fact that they weren't as well established as some of the other similar competitors in the area. He refused to listen to anyone however when they tried to bring this up to him and put it off on the fact that they were just too stingy to pay for good services.
The case that Juliet was currently working on was one of the first big cases that they had gotten in a while where someone was willing to pay good money to have this investigated and it was only by the pure chance that a woman in a club would draw less attention than a man that she got the chance.
A part of Juliet wondered though if this was some type of setup that they were being tricked in to following. She couldn't say for sure, but there seemed something that was rather too honest and straight about the club for either Daniel or Richard to be involved in whatever was going on. Of course, that didn't rule out any of their VIP or frequent visitors. It wasn't uncommon for good patrons to take advantage of getting on the good side of club owners to get away with almost murder right under their noses because they gain that much trust from them.
It wasn't like she could ask Daniel if there had been anything suspicious going on with the club lately though. He might either suspect that something was up with her or that she didn't feel comfortable working at the club based upon what had just happened the previous night.
Such things never bothered her though. It wasn't like it had happened to her after all, plus she was fully capable of handling herself in such a situation anyways. What she really needed was a reason to be able to ask questions without being suspicious.
Closing her eyes, she continued to ponder this dilemma. She could maybe ask Richard to be her ears, but she didn't want to risk getting an outsider too involved in something as important as this. It was bad enough that she had to already lie to her boss about her getting the job without anyone knowing the real reason behind it.
If Carl found out that she had blown it on her first night on the job, not only would he yell at for hours if not days about, he'd likely either fire her or demote her and not put her on another case for at least a year, if she was that fortunate.
For now she was just going to have to do her best and keep her head down while she thought about a better option and wait for this 'job' she was going to be part of to start.
Discounting the current day where she felt like she wouldn't be able to go to the club even if she wanted to due to the hangover she had, there were still at least four more days where she could visit the club on her own and figure out a solution to her problem. Getting into the VIP area wouldn't be that hard now that she was going to be working there, but that didn't guarantee that she would find anything interesting if no one was there or if doors were closed. She would have to figure that out.
