Capítulo 6: Puzzles and Zombies

Entering the library, Claire's immediately met with the zombie that had entered as they ran out. It lunges at her from the right, only a few feet away. She quickly ducks under its arms and runs past. As she hurries past some tables something grabs her ankle. She looks down to see a police zombie laying underneath one. She stomps on its arm, forcing it to let go of her. She runs through a door, leading to a small indoor balcony of sorts overlooking a small reception room. A statue of a unicorn with its front hooves resting on top of a large medallion towers over her, sitting in front of a guard rail. She walks up to the statue looking at all the intricate details, it looks as if it could come to life and jump off the pedestal at any moment.

"Hey, Claire," Leon's voice suddenly emanates from the radio, causing her to jump a bit. She grabs the radio off her belt.

"Yeah?"

"There's two weapons in the locker, a shotgun and a grenade launcher. I don't see carrying both of them around being a possibility, so, which one do you want? I can leave it in the lobby for you,"

"Um, how much practice have you had using a grenade launcher?"

"Zero,"

"I'll take it than, don't need you blowing yourself up,"

"A-Alright," Leon replies, slightly nervous.

Claire puts the radio back on her belt and pulls out the notebook. Scrawled underneath the drawing of the statue are three symbols. The first is two fish, one on top of the other, facing opposite directions. The next is a scorpion and the last one a vase with water spilling out of it. At the unicorn statue's feet is a fancy looking, rectangular plac made of marble with some aged, gold-painted trim. In the middle is a smaller rectangle with a round cylinder placed in it. The edges are black, with three dials in the center. They all have different symbols on them. Banging can be heard coming from the door she came from.

Touching the cold metal sends chills into Claire's hands as she fidgets with them. Turning the dials to match the drawing in the notebook causes an audible click to trigger as the dials stiffen. Suddenly, the medallion opens up to reveal a secret compartment, a smaller medallion with a unicorn engraved on it. As she grabs the medallion and stuffs it into her bag the door bursts open with the two zombies from earlier stumbling through it. As she brings up her pistol, she sees that the other slots are all empty.

Shit! I forgot to reload!

She waits for the first zombie to get closer before she quickly runs around them and uses the last bullet in her gun to shoot the second one. Heading back into the library she's about to head for the door out into the lobby, but a nearby corpse wakes up and blocks the path. She hurries over to the ladder but as she's about to climb it, she spots something on the ground between some bookshelves. A red handgun ammo box.

I could really use the ammo…

She quickly rushes over, and grabs the box before jumping to the ladder and climbing. As she goes up it she can feel one of the zombie's hands brush up against her shoe. She reaches the top and checks the contents of the box. Five bullets. She puts four into her gun, one in her bag, and tosses the box aside as she clicks the barrel back in place. She looks down at the three zombies down below, all walking towards the ladder and raising their hands in the air, trying to reach her despite how far up she is. There's some stairs leading back down in the other corner of the room. But what if the zombies follow her into the lobby? She doesn't have the ammo to spare.

"Hey Leon?" She asks into her radio.

"Yeah?"

"Do you know if there's another way from the library to the lobby?"

"There's the door in the upper floor. You just head through the door in the next room into a hall and follow it to some stairs. At the bottom you make a left down a hall and then a right. The first door to the left is an office and there's a door there that leads into the lobby,"

"Alright, thanks...you really know the layout of this place,"

"Oh, not really, I have a map,"

"Oh, well thanks again,"

"No problem. Be careful, I...saw something outside the windows up there,"

"...Alright, thanks for the heads up,"

Saw something outside, on the third floor? It better have just been a bird.

Turning around, Claire sees the door Leon mentioned is right there. She heads on through, entering a murky, dust filled roomed that wreaks of death. A few feet in front of her, slightly to the left, a body dangles from the ceiling. Everything in the room seems to have a bluish-grey tint to it from the stuffy air. As she holds back the urge to vomit she tip-toes past the zombie.

CLANG!

Claire jumps away from the body as it suddenly lowers a couple inches, swings slightly and then comes to a halt. Claire uncovers her mouth and catches her breath and relaxes her body. She quickly steps away and looks around, seeing a large cell to the left. Sitting behind the bars, is the woman statue. She makes sure to keep her distance from the hanging body as she walks past it and a thick support pillar to her right.

Walking up to the cell, she finds the source of the smell, several dead bodies of cops piled in the other side of the cell. Where the door presumably must have been, is a barricade of wooden planks all stuck up by barbed wire and nails. A bar of C4 is taped onto the middle.

"Who the hell did this?" Claire mutters to herself as she steps back to look at all of it. She bumps into a something. She turns to see it's just a small nightstand, with a slip of paper on it. The hand-writing was done haphazardly, like some crazy lunatic wrote it down. What's written is just as crazy as you'd expect from something that looks like this. Whoever wrote it was the one who put everyone in there and barricaded them in.

Well, if this place has C4, they must have a detonator for it. I should get this medallion to the lobby first.

Claire heads to the other side of the room, passing by the hanging body once more, and past some more furniture covered in tarps to a door on the wall opposite the one she came in from. Heading through, she's greeted by moonlight and the rain trying to break its way through the windows. Turning left she sees a barricade made of furniture is blocking the path. Turning to the right the path is clear, leading to a corner and continuing to the right. She heads down the hallway, staying away from the walls and hearing some creaking beneath her feet. Turning the corner, her shadow suddenly appearing before her on the ground startles her a bit.

At the other end of the corridor sits a door, and the path also continues to the right once again. She makes her way to the door, and can see in the corner of her eye, more stacked up furniture blocking the way to her right. She heads through the door, finding herself in a small, quaint, room filled with fancily-carved bookshelves all lined with books. A desk sits in front of hr hugging the left wall, a small arm-less mannequin sitting atop it next to a desk lamp that struggles to keep away the enclosing darkness.

Walking up to the desk she turns to the right to see the room extends a bit, a massive hole in the wall leading out into where the hall she was in before continues. The wallpaper and dry wall around the hole has been broken away, revealing the brick-work underneath. She heads on through the hole, making a left and continuing down the hall into a large open stairwell that goes all the way down. An elegant, bronze chandelier hangs in the middle, just a foot or two below her. A couple lights below are on and faintly light up the stairwell, showing a body laying at the very bottom. Walking past some boxes, she starts descending down the stairs. That's when she hears a window break somewhere down below.
