Zhang Mei Xing's heart felt heavy. The expression on her pale face was sour as she looked into the mirror. The sound of the water droplets dripping down from her chin was also adding to the irritation in her heart, so she closed her eyes.
'Why did my guide forget to mention about this?' The question came to her as she wiped her face using her handkerchief.
There was one thing that Liu Yang did not explain to her. That a guide's job in a 'test' world was NOT only to monitor the progress of the examinee and loan cheats if applicable.
Every time an examination was close to its end, a guide would have to use the identity of a key figure, most of the time, a rival, to create troubles for the examinee. The reason for this was the term 'butterfly effect'. With but a flap of a butterfly's wings, a typhoon could occur somewhere.
A reincarnator would definitely take advantage of things they knew to change the original history. But the more changes occur, the more the future they know would become unrecognizable.
The goal was to add some variables in the critical juncture which would truly test an examinee's adaptability, morality, and wits. The gist here was that those who could reincarnate should not be the type who could not redeem herself or proceed with her goals without the cheat called 'knowledge of the future'.
"I don't know how to react to this…" Zhang Mei Xing kept shaking her head, feeling lightheaded as she thought of her new mission.
On the user interface that was hovering before her, she could read that she had to act like Shen Li and at the same time, do something extra to test Xiang Linxin's intelligence which was deemed as her weakness by the 'system'.
So how was a trainee guide supposed to do to achieve that?
<System: Use your brain and imagination.>
"…" Great.
Zhang Mei Xing closed her eyes again.
Thinking about it, now her mission was to create a scene that would 'guide' that woman to use her wits to survive or teach the woman to become much more active in scheming. It was probably the last one for this test.
It was giving her the feeling that in order to truly pass, Xiang Linxin had to outwit her.
"Wouldn't it be too harsh?" Zhang Mei Xing grimaced thinking of Xiang Linxin who was so impulsive and not prone to using her head sometimes.
However, after thinking for a minute or so, she realized that this was inevitable.
Not considering the goal of the Temple, if things were considered from the perspective of a guide, they would definitely be called a failure if the person they handled could not do anything once a situation outside of her 'knowledge of the future' or 'cheat' arises.
On the system panel, the criteria 'Counterattack', 'Avoid Death', 'Regain What's Mine' glowed conspicuously, with the bar corresponding to Counterattack already full. About the two others, although the girl did not do much, Avoid Death was already three-fourths filled, which meant on the last day, the girl only needed to prevent getting into another car crash.
If Zhang Mei Xing's memory did not fail her, lady Xiang's mother had a huge inheritance that was being eyed by the half-sister and stepmother. The girl was the only remaining member of the Liu family so everything would be left to her, though the age condition was a puzzle.
As long as Xiang Lin survived, nobody else could rob the fortune away. Yet surviving shouldn't be a problem if the guard was by her side.
'In other words, if things were left as they are now, Xiang Linxin basically passed. But it was a fact that in terms of plotting, unveiling others' schemes, and coming up with counterattacks, Xiang Linxin is still lacking.'
'Still, what kind of passer is the Temple asking from me?'
She then sighed. At this point, she had already accepted her situation, knowing only by not dwelling into the matter anymore would she regain her wits and calmness.
In any case, for the two days to come, she would be Shen Li.
Of course, it was the bad girl scheming against her half-sister, not the lover of Song Heng, the refrigerator CEO.
Zhang Mei Xing was not fond of the man so after walking out of the restroom, she politely chased him away when he finished the tea. She even sneered a bit upon seeing the disappointed glint from his eyes. Probably the man was expecting something spicy to happen between them so he was making that expression.
'Hmmph. Fool, dream on.' The woman laughed a bit upon remembering that the tea she served, while could help one sober up, was actually not that good for the kidney.
…
Several hours passed. A new day dawned.
Since the system stipulated her to be as awful as possible, Zhang Mei Xing woke up early and headed to where 'her' mother was.
'Hmm. This Madam Shen looked to be glowing more than usual.'
'It's probably because she finally became the official wife of her beloved man.'
When she saw the woman looking so relaxed in the garden while enjoying her breakfast, she just couldn't help but comment internally.
"Mom."
"Li'er!" A happy smile appeared on Madam Shen's face upon seeing her.
"How surprising that you woke up early." There was also a lovely smile on her face, but there was a hint of teasing in her eyes. Under her daughter's gaze, the Madam's face flushed.
The two talked for a while. The girl was thankful that a major event just happened so there were a lot of things to settle and from time to time, people were asking for the madam's instructions.
Zhang Mei Xing did not stay long and only sounded out the madam's opinion about Xiang Linxin's deeds last night. As she had little knowledge of Shen Li's habits and speech pattern, she was afraid to give away clues that she was not Shen Li.
"I would not stay long, Mom. I remember something that I want to talk about to… Heng."
As the affectionate pet name escaped from her lips, only the system knew how awkward Zhang Mei Xing felt about it.
"I heard he left quite late after the party. He must be not up yet. Are you going to his penthouse then?" asked the madam as 'Shen Li' stood up.
'I don't know where that penthouse is…' Zhang Mei Xing grimaced internally, kind of regretting that she did not explore this world more.
Looking at her expression though, Madam Shen seemed to have thought that 'Shen Li' disliked her plans being transparent to others. Laughter came from the other woman as she waved a hand. "Your face says it all, my dear. Go, go. Have the driver just ferry you there."
"Okay, mom." Zhang Mei Xing was glad she wore a pair of wedge sandals so it was easier to run away. Each sandal's heel was three and a half inches high. Yet it was already okay compared to the other killer high heel shoes owned by the real Shen Li. While Zhang Mei Xing was a woman, colors drained from her face at the sight of shoe racks housing beautiful high heels that were more than six inches high.
Anyway, she had successfully fled, and after the driver sent to Song Heng's house, she actually left and looked for somewhere with no people. A coffee shop nearby registered in her sight where she entered, hiding her face by wearing a huge pair of shades and covering her mouth with a handkerchief.
Half an hour passed and after eating some cake for breakfast and finishing a cup of coffee, she raised a hand to call the waiter.
"Excuse me."
"Yes, Ma'am?"
"Where's the restroom here?" She spoke in a low tone while casually looking around.
"Ah. That way, Ma'am." The other pointed a finger in a direction. "I saw that you're by yourself so I suggest you bring your important items with you."
'Shen Li' smiled kindly at the polite boy.
The latter watched her go to the restroom, then went back to serving other customers. The café was in an exceptionally good location, near a school, a mall, a marketplace, and next to a row of high-rise buildings. There were rarely vacant chairs in the place. However, the café was not that large and tables were sparsely distributed. Also, the boy had a good memory.
After the waiter recited a new order to his colleagues at the counter, he looked around and wondered whether the pretty lady from before had already left. He was a bit puzzled since he had not seen her again even though he was constantly moving around in the place.
What he didn't know was that 'Shen Li' had really left a few minutes ago. And she didn't commit eat-and-run since she made sure to leave a few bills on the cashier. It was just that nobody had seen her since then.
Once done confirming that she could still travel between two worlds, she left the café, planning to head towards a few places to spy on Song Heng and other key figures responsible for Xiang Linxin's accident.
