Interlude: Enri Emmot
==========
Outskirts of Carne Village
The sounds of feet running through the dusty path were overshadowed by the clanking of the armor as the soldiers ran. A girl and her older sister was also running away from them, as if those soldiers are going to kill them.
The truth was, they were.
The two sisters are both villagers from the soon-to-be-destroyed Carne Village. It was attacked by these unknown armored soldiers who started a bloodbath, killing every villager in sight on horseback. It was a bloody mess, one they could not forget for a long time.
Their father had sacrificed himself for them, telling them to run away to survive the massacre of their village. He held one of the armored men, preventing him from giving chase to the two sisters. However, it was a choice that only ended in his death. The sisters heeded his words, and ran as quickly as they could.
But they couldn't run away forever, that much they knew. Their legs were aching, and the soldiers have seemingly infinite stamina. They are basically gasping for air while running, but the older sister knew that they couldn't stop, lest they were killed. But it was all for naught, because Enri tripped over a rock she didn't notice and fell over, taking Nemu with her.
As soon as she fell, she knew she was done for. Yet even in this situation, she put the well-being of her sister before her own. A heroic sacrifice, one that she knew would be unheard of. To others, it might be foolish, but it was all that she knew she could do to save her sister. She curled up, covering her sister with her body.
A sword struck her back, somehow missing all her vital organs. Pain blossomed, and she grit her teeth to endure it. She would not give them the satisfaction of hearing her scream in pain. One part of her was resigned that she was to die here. Another prayed to her deity for someone to save them.
And, as if her prayers were answered, somebody did.
The soldiers took a step back, as if afraid of her. She was confused for a second, but she noticed that they weren't looking at her, but behind her. Looking at what they're looking at, she saw why the soldiers were scared.
There was a rip in space. She couldn't see the other side for some reason, but the people, or rather, the undead stepped through the portal. One was a skeleton, most likely an Elder Lich, clothed in a velvet coat, and on his hand was a golden staff with seven snakes with orbs in their mouths, reflecting sunlight off its golden glory.
The Elder Lich looked at the girl, before looking at the soldiers. Even though it had no face, those witnessing the scene was sure that he was looking at them in contempt. He reached his hand out in front of the soldier who wounded her, as if taking something.
"'Grasp Heart!'"
The Elder Lich suddenly closed its hand as if crushing something, and the knight collapsed in front of him. It was a weird scene, but in Momonga's perspective, he did as the spell said, he grasped the heart of the knight and crushed it between his palms. The other knight recoiled in shock at what happened. He could not understand what the Elder Lich did, but it was certain that his comrade died and prepared to run away.
"I see... It's not just my body, but my mind is no longer human," Momonga murmured under his breath.
The second figure stepped out of the portal. It was someone in armor, painted black and shining in blood red. His helmet is flat-topped, with two square slits for eyes. His armor has a metal pauldron on the left shoulder, and it has an emblem. A circle with an inverse arc with two triangles sticking out at the ends, painted white. He has a metal gauntlet on the left arm, while his right arm is covered in black bandages. His leggings are layered in plating, giving the appearance of scales. His weapon is a bastard sword, hanging on his back. It was straight, but the blade from the guard was an inch wider in comparison to the end of the blade before it edges to a point. The scabbard was black as well, with a red crystal on the center of the guard of the blade.
"To not be conscious of someone dying is not being inhuman, Momonga," he said, his voice higher in pitch than the skeleton's baritone voice, "They're murderers, so it's natural not to feel anything even if you kill them."
"I'd like to see you do better," the Elder Lich— no, Momonga is his name— said, scoffing.
"Watch me."
The air exploded and he was gone. To the naked eye, it seems like he disappeared, but it was not the case. It was just that he moved faster than the eye could process, and disappeared before anyone noticed. A shout was heard, and Enri looked on to the source of it.
The man who disappeared was now in front of the soldier, his unsheathed sword sticking out behind the soldier. It seems that his speed compensated for the dull edge that the scabbard has and pierced through the metal armor that the soldier was wearing.
"Even me too, huh." It was not heard by the sisters, but the Elder Lich picked it up.
"It seems that we had changed, Mercury."
"Yeah. I would have been vomiting from disgust, but I feel nothing but joy from killing one of these bastards."
He said that with so much venom that Enri was surprised at what happened in his life to hate people like this.
"I was contemplating on running away if my 9th tier spell didn't work on them. I thought that it would only stun them, but for it to be this effective..."
"Yeah. It seems that my mind can keep up with my body's agility. I didn't even augment myself with skills or use any attack skills, these bastards are so pathetic that it's laughable."
"I will run another test to see if there are any changes to my ability. 'Create mid-tier undead, Death Knight!'"
A cloud of darkness appeared above the bloodless corpse and enveloped it. It clung to him like a second skin above his armor, and sunk into his body. At first, there were no changes, but the knight's body convulsed and stood up slowly. Then, a wet dripping sound was heard as black goo slipped through the headpiece's gaps. It flowed seemingly without end, covering his whole body. It then started to grow, from some feet tall into a 2.3-meter monster called 'Death Knight'. Its body was no longer human, turned into a skeleton with pieces of armor on his shoulders, head and a cape to cover its dark body. It also had a large sword and shield, sized perfectly for it. It looks so evil, that merely looking at it causes despair in the beholder. But to Momonga and Mercury, this was nothing but a minion.
"That's fucked up. I want to see what this one would turn out." He pulled out his sword from the body that no longer convulsed, meaning it was dead. He swung the sword diagonally from his left swiftly, cleaning all the blood that clung to the scabbard. "'Create high-tier undead, Abyss Watcher!'"
Another cloud of darkness appeared and enveloped the other soldier. His body also convulsed and stood up slowly, same as the Death Knight. It also made a wet dripping sound as dark blue goo flowed from its headpiece. It surrounded the body and changed it, but it did not grow. Instead, his whole armor changed, from his pointed headpiece to the steel pauldron that now covered its left shoulder. Its face was rotting, bot covered, and its eyes glowed red. Its steel armor had changed into lighter armor, but even though it was giving the appearance of leather, anyone who saw it was sure that it was tougher than metal armor. A ruined, tattered cape hangs behind it. It also carries a large greatsword on its right shoulder and a backhand dagger in its left. Even though it was smaller than the Death Knight, anyone with enough knowledge would know that the smaller one was the bigger threat.
"That's fucked up." The knight with similar armor, Mercury, said.
"Death Knight, exterminate all the knights who are attacking this village."
The monster simply replied with a roar and charged into the village.
"This is really fucked up. Abyss Walker, go make sure you do the same."
The Abyss Watcher simply opted for a nod and ran faster than the Death Knight who has larger legs.
"Hm... I did not expect it to obey its job."
"Same. I thought it doesn't leave its summoner alone."
Mercury came to back to talk directly face-to-face with Momonga.
"Well, what do you think we should do now?"
"We wait for the other two to cross, Momonga."
"—Sorry for making you wait."
A melodious third voice suddenly cut in between them. Another figure stepped out of the portal. It was a female, that much they knew because of the voice and the armor. It looked like a devil, with horns on its tall headpiece and wields a bardiche and kite shield combo. It hugged her beautiful figure, not exposing even a single patch of skin. Whoever was the wearer of this devilish armor, they are sure to be beautiful.
"I'm sorry for being late as well, I was asleep when my master called for me."
Another voice spoke up. It was also feminine, but what greeted her sights was surprising. Instead of form-fitting armor like the one the first female has, hers seem to be more alike to her master. A tattered tricorn cap was adorned upon her head, and her face was covered with a scarf. It only revealed her mesmerizing blood-red eyes. Her armor was similar to her master, painted black which shines blood red. If not for the fact that her voice is feminine, everybody would have mistaken her to be a male. Her weapons are alien to Enri. It looks like a long, narrow metal pipe attached to a steel body. A one-eyed telescope also sits on the top of the weapon, though its use is unknown. It looks like a complex weapon. It has a sash connected to the butt end and the second metal pipe under the longer one, slung on her back.
"You know undead can't sleep. Stop spouting lies, Sloth," the armored man said. Enri's eyes widened. She was undead? It wasn't obvious because her whole face was covered, but if she was undead, then she fears what's underneath the scarf.
"Of course, Mercury-sama. I simply meant that I didn't want to go on the incursion. Its going to be boring anyways."
"Of course it's going to be boring. It's supposed to be boring. But it's an important job of every group, you know? Sooner or later, we would have to do our part to contribute."
"But why didn't you send Lust? Isn't she better at doing this?"
"She is, but I asked for you because you have your job class. It's most likely unique and something that the enemies wouldn't expect."
"But if you reveal your secrets early, aren't you losing the trade in information?"
"It's not a loss if nobody finds out about it," he said darkly.
After finishing their conversation, they looked onto the still bleeding Enri and her sister.
"Then, how will we dispose of these humans? I'm pretty sure they heard too much."
"...You didn't ask Sebas about what we're doing here?"
Only her silence answered him.
"Ah, of course you didn't, you lazy idiot. Well, Momonga decided to save this town for some reason or other. The enemies are the knights in armor massacring the village. I want to make sure that some of them leaves alive to spread what we did, but I need you to hide in an area where you can spot enemies but cannot be spotted back in return."
"So airborne is out of the question..."
They murmured among themselves, not letting Enri hear any more than what she heard. After a minute, they look like they know what they're going to do with them. Mercury took out a phial containing blood-red liquid. It was a Minor Healing Potion, but Enri didn't know that. Mercury walked towards them holding the red phial in his hand, offering it to them.
"Drink it. It's a Minor Healing Potion. It'll heal your wounds."
His voice was calming as she looked into his eyes. She was completely mesmerized by them that she numbly took the potion, took off the cap and drank it. It tasted like mild strawberries, and she felt pain blossoming on her back. It shook her out of her hypnotized state, but she felt that her wound was indeed closing up. In just a few seconds, the skin is as good as it was before she was attacked by those soldiers.
"Was there anything weird that happened? You looked like you were in pain before you completely went back to normal."
She was still blanked out for a second before she finally responded—
"Y-Yes, there was something weird. I felt my torn muscles and skin heal and it was painful, but after that, the pain was gone."
Was it abnormal? After all, healing your muscles, skin, blood vessels and nerves at the same time in a short amount of space is bound to be painful, right? But the sisters and the four powerful beings that came from the portal didn't know about this.
"Is that so? This is unsettling..."
He started murmuring about various ways of making sure that the potion doesn't cause them to black out if they have a large amount of fatal wounds that instantly heal. The only solution seems to be adding quick acting, short lived, powerful anesthesia to help numb the pain and to be able to get back into the fight quickly. But there are some problems with this. Would adding this miracle anesthesia dilute the effects of the healing? Would it be incompatible and destroy the healing potion? Would creating the miracle anesthesia even possible?
"Anyways, I'll talk about this with someone who knows alchemy. For now, we should be going to the village, don't you think so?"
"Mhm. I think so too," Momonga replied, "But what are we going to do with these humans? They already heard far too much, and we already gifted them with a potion. Do we save them, or do we kill them?"
"Innocents shouldn't be killed, Momonga," Mercury sharply said, "I suggest giving her something to defend herself with."
"Right, I'm sorry I suggested that." He turned to Enri, "Do you know magic?"
"No, no I don't know it, but I know of it. An alchemist comes to our village, he is a friend of mine who uses magic."
"...Is that so? That makes things easy to explain. I'm a magic caster."
And so, he casted his spells on the sisters.
"'Anti-life Cocoon', 'Wall of Protection from Arrows'."
After finishing casting his spells, he explained to them the effects of the barrier that surrounded them. He also fished for something through a small portal. He took out a pair of horns that doesn't look anything out of the ordinary. After explaining what the horn does and what she must do next, he turned to leave, the black knight following behind him and behind them were their respective subordinates.
"Th-Thank you for saving us!"
"Thank you!"
"This much is worthless. Thank us later when we do something that's fitting."
Even with Mercury saying that in an annoyed tone while not turning, they still felt grateful for the help that they have given to them.
"Wh-What are your names? I need to know the names of my savior."
The four of them stopped walking. The Blood Knight turned around to address Enri properly.
"He's Momonga, and I'm Mercury. Remember the name Ainz Ooal Gown, for that is the name of our group."
And so, he turned back and the four marched onward towards the village
