I PARKED my car in front of the plant shop and hesitated. The day had passed so quicky. I didn’t want Lily to leave the passenger seat and end our date. I’d even driven back as slowly as possible from Clearwater, not wanting our day to end, but now I my excuses were running low.

Before deciding on mini-golf, I considered taking Lily on a typical date and using my money to wow her. A private helicopter ride to New York, an expensive dinner, a limo—I’d throw out all the stops. No restaurant within a hundred miles from Pelican Bay was anything like we had in New York, but after getting to know more about Lily I decided that wasn’t her cup of tea.

Mini-golf sounded normal, unimposing, and safe.
