The farm was a quaint one. A semi typical front which a little blue house up front with a porch. You could see part of the barn just behind the house which was painted classic farm red. No different than what one would expect from a farmhouse.
“Wow”. Takoda said. “Not a bad setup!”
“It’s not much.” Casey said. “But it’s been in the family for so long that we go it to our ancestors”.
“I think their pleased”. Takoda said.
“Can you take us to where the owls stay?” Wiyot asked.
“Are you an ornithologist or something?” Casey asked.
“They are fascinating to me”. Wiyot said.
Casey took Wiyot and Takoda to the owl barn. The exterior was a sky-blue barn house that blended into the scenic background of the farm. On the inside, the owls were no longer in cages, but it they saw that the owls were tagged on their right ankles. Within the barn the owls were able to roam free throughout it’s confides. Wiyot squinted his eyes as he watched some of the owls perform a pecking motion.
“This is something”. Calian said, having just walked up with Halian in tow.
“You guys keep them around just to keep down the rodent population?” Wiyot asked.
“That’s not the only reason”. Casey said. “But it is a big part of it. Like last week, one of them was chasing a rat. It was crazy, the rat grabbed the wire and nearly got away. But the owl had a buddy who finished the job”.
“How lovely”.
“Casey!” Henry cried out.
“Time to appease the old man”. Casey said. “But please, make yourselves at home!”
“Thanks again Casey”. Takoda said.
“Don’t mention it”. Casey said as she smirked and winked at Takoda before taking off.
“Yeah guys, she loves me”. Takoda announced.
“Ever thought that she’s just being nice to you?” Calian asked.
“Hey now, don’t hate the player, just hate the game”.
“Speaking of games, what cruel one is this?”
“We got to do something”. Halian said.
“If you want to go deal with Henry then go ahead”.
“I got to take a walk guys”. Wiyot said.
“What?” Calian said. “You truly have nothing to say?”
“I just have to clear my mind a bit”.
“Tch, some leader of the pack”.
“Don’t worry, I’ll be back”.
Wiyot left as he walked through the farm. He saw the fields where they grew their grain which felt endless to him. There were apple trees as wells filled with apples plenty ready to be plucked. There was a pond where ducks congregated nearby. Nearby crickets chirped as a frog leaped from the water onto a lily pad.
Wiyot decided to take a seat at a bench at the lake. As he looked up in the sky there was a hawk in midair. The hawk swooped down to the pond and snatched up the frog up from the lily pad and then flew away into the distance.
As it grew darker Wiyot returned to the barn. Calian, Takoda, and Halian had all left. The owls were the ones who remained, doing their rodent control job. Wiyot had transformed into a owl as he walked away the area. The barn was packed with an abundance of rodents that scurried from one end to the other.
“Welcome to the family”. Shayan asked, having walked up to Wiyot with a piece of straw in his mouth.
“Is this the life that you actually want?” Wiyot asked.
“It is the life that I have been given”.
“But for all you know, you were meant for so much more”.
“Where did you get that idea? If that was true, then I would not be here. But here I am, and here you are as well”
It was after that Wiyot began to survey the area. He noticed that there was crack in the wooden walls of the barn that were big enough for owls to get through. He could see that there was a beaten path just outside that the owls would take when they were too lazy to walk. He continued to walk in the barn as he noticed more cracks and holes around.
Night fell and the owls were getting ready for dinner. At the same time Casey had cooked dinner for everyone. Inside of the house laid a simple, yet intricate home. Their walls were blue. The den, which had an old school design with green and light beige, the floors were made up of hardwood, and their tv had an antenna.
The kitchen had a big wooden table that looked as though the mahogany was chopped down the day before. The cabinets lent themselves to a similar feel. The kitchen top looked as though they were in some cabin diner.
“You boys are some lucky sons of bitches”. Henry said. “Casey cooked up a nice one”.
The table was laid out with mashed potatoes and gravy, ham, chicken, spareribs, collard greens, corn on the cobb, peas, carrots, white rice, and chocolate chip cookies for desert. All of the ingredients had originated from the farm. Once Wiyot took his first bites, he could not hide his enthusiasm for the meal.
“Wow”. Takoda said as everyone dug into her food around the table. “Casey, this is incredible”.
“Aww, don’t gas me up!” Casey said.
“What is gas up?” Henry asked.
“Blowing smoke up your ass”. Calian answered.
“Thanks, Calian”. Takoda said.
“No worries”.
“But this is awesome!” Halian said. “Thank you so much! I really mean it!”
“Don’t worry about it”. Cassey said. “It’s just nice to have some company for once. It’s been a while since…well, mother died”. A sharp silence overcame the room. Henry put his head down as Takoda, Wiyot, Calian, and Halian all stared at Casey.
“Your mother would be proud of you”. Wiyot said. “Excuse me”.
Wiyot left the kitchen and decided to outside of the house. He then sat on the porch and stared out into the distance. He could hear the owls hooting at the night’s sky as he began to settle in. He then got up and walked to the barn. Wiyot stopped short of walking in as he stood right in of the entrance around some of the owls on the current shift.
“Hey”. Wiyot said, “We need to talk”.
