Chapter Text
"Sooooo…." Sun started awkwardly as he sat before Blake and Ruby, the rest of Team SSSN nowhere to be found (except for Neptune, who was, contrary to his cool boyband image, studying really hard at his desk and writing so fast with his pencil that it was literally smoking) at the moment. Neptune wasn't listening, because he also listened to really loud math rock while studying. "What's up? Is this about the uh… the thing? The uh… hunting down criminals thing? Also aren't you supposed to tell like… teachers about this kinda thing? I swear Professor Ozpin said something about not fighting crime without backup or something…"
"We have Ruby and Penny, what more backup could we possibly need?" Blake deadpanned, rolling her eyes while Ruby just perked up and giggled, tail wagging behind her as she bumped her shoulder against her not-really-sister-in-law and grinned. "Whatever. Are you and your team in? We could go in without you, but more people means less chance of something stupid happening."
"Yeah but that also means more people get in trouble if Professor Goodwitch gets mad at us," Ruby pointed out, clearing her throat a bit and looking to the side. "I mean, I could probably handle it all myself, but… I don't wanna show that off yet."
"..."
"... That?" Sun asked, both him and Blake staring incredulously at Ruby as she simply smiled without elaborating, as if they both already knew what she could do. Which… Sun didn't, but Blake knew what Ruby was and had a bit of a guess considering that she'd seen Ruby spawn grimm. Not just making inanimate objects out of grimmstuff, but actual, moving, real grimm. Beowolves, Ursai, even the horrific things she'd called Rosebuds that did pretty much all the chores around the dorm now because… of course they did. They also baked cookies and made breakfast when Ruby was too busy canoodling with Penny in various places to pay attention. "What's that?"
"Oh, it's where I summon all of my Rosebuds with all of my weapons and have them attack at once! Well, I guess I shouldn't bring out the heavy machine gun if there's new recruits. Or my punt gun greatsword," she mused, tapping her chin and shrugging as a Rosebud spawned out from beneath her cape, horrific crackling and gurgling sounds echoing through the room as the abomination against nature ripped out of Ruby's back and fell to the floor- much to the shock and horror of Sun.
"WHAT THE SHIT IS THAT!?" he cried, throwing himself back and raising his staff for defense, Neptune continuing to stay oblivious as he wrote an essay of truly impressive length while Sun shrieked like a little girl. "WHY AND HOW DID A GRIMM JUST POP OUT OF YOUR BACK!?"
"... It's… just kinda… what I do? It's not that weird, Sun," Ruby shrugged, the Rosebud waving and shaking itself off as it more or less just copied Ruby's mannerisms- the two grimm things doing a secret handshake before the Rosebud tottered off and proceeded to crawl out of the window like a horrific spider demon and vanished. "She's just gonna make some cookies. Or… I am? I guess? I dunno, I'm basically controlling them mostly but it's kinda like an autopilot? Anyway. Yeah I could do that with like three hundred-ish Rosebuds but it'd get… messy. Especially if there's people without Aura there. I don't wanna kill innocent people who just want things to get better."
"... Let's shelve that for another day. Maybe if we're fighting a giant horde of grimm or something," Blake shuddered, trying not to go pale at the thought of three hundred horrific Ruby shaped grimm wielding weapons with her level of proficiency charging down a rally full of White Fang members- most of whom would have likely only joined the cause because they were sick of the racism that was constantly perpetuated throughout all levels of society in every Kingdom.
Even if Vale was nicer about it, there were still way too many places that barred faunus from entering and way too many shitty old people who were way too cocky about shouting slurs at faunus walking down the sidewalks. Plus all of the other issues, like the council, the cops, the way their housing was always demolished and never rebuilt, the cops, the excuses they kept using to push faunus further to the fringes of the city, the cops, the way faunus were still paid lower wages even when it was supposed to be illegal to do that, the cops …
Anyway.
"Y-yeah uh… fucking- you're uh- you're in control, right? They're not gonna start attacking random people?" Sun asked, staring out of the window at where the Rosebud had left, then back at Ruby with a shudder of trepidation. "Like, those are safe , right?"
"Huh? Oh yeah, they're fine. I mean I guess they were kinda dangerous when I first learned to do that back when I was a lil kid but I was pretty bad about my aggression back then. It's all good now! I haven't been so emotionally stable since before I was four!" Ruby answered, grinning cheerfully and bouncing on her toes slightly. "Penny's so nice… ah… I miss her already…"
"... Ruby, you literally saw her ten minutes ago. She's still in our dorm room, and that's a three minute walk away from where we are now ," Blake sighed, palming her face and grumbling at just how fucking needy the two were with each other. Honestly, if either of them were at all good at poetry, Blake knew damn well that Penny would have composed a thousand sonnets about how much she loved Ruby by now, and also would have performed each and every one of them to Ruby. And vice versa. It was cute, but also… well. They tended to get distracted a lot. "Anyway. Sun. You guys coming or not?"
"... Well. Uh… I mean… Uh…" Sun looked between Ruby and Blake for a long moment, seeming rather nervous about the entire thing before he quickly pulled out his scroll and tapped out a question into his team's groupchat, with Neptune silently holding his thumb up for a moment before returning to what looked like… multivariable Dust calculus???? Wasn't that a third year course??? Huh. Well, Blake always had suspected that Neptune was smarter than he looked… not that that was a high bar to clear. "Yeah okay uh, Scarlet n' Sage say yeah… and Neptune said okay… so… I guess we're going! I don't really wanna wear a mask tho."
"It's fine. There are occasionally humans that join up with the White Fang. Not many, and it's not like they're usually extremely welcome… and not many in recent years because of the violence and increasing bigotry on both sides… but there were. If we can get someone to pose as being misanthropic enough that they'd want to join the White Fang even with the calls to violence that Adam has been perpetuating…" Blake paused, then looked over at Ruby. "... Mercury is coming with us, right? They're not going on a sudden last minute week long mission?"
"Nah, they've been doing the short form stuff closer to Vale cuz Cinder said she doesn't wanna leave us alone for a month again after what happened last semester," Ruby shook her head, rubbing her neck awkwardly and grimacing as her cape fluttered of its own volition to wrap around her. "Ugh. I know you know this by now but your ex is a jerk ."
"... What happened last semester?" Sun asked, somewhat already knowing he'd regret asking in an instant.
"Well, the night that you showed up and used Penny as a springboard, I uh… well there was a big fight full of White Fang goons and a thief named Roman Torchwick over at the docks and then Blake's ex boyfriend-"
"Adam Taurus, leader of the Vale White Fang and a wanted terrorist in three Kingdoms," Blake interjected, sighing quietly and shaking her head. "Don't ask. It's a long story."
"Right…"
"-showed up and he had a really cool Semblance that was almost like Yang's but instead of using Burn he channeled damage into his weapons and increased their attack power, and he shot me in the head and my head exploded!" Ruby finished, then patted her skull for good measure. "I got better, and then I mauled him and ripped his arm off! And stole his weapons!"
"Serves him right. I'm still sorry I didn't manage to kill him myself," Blake growled, looking away and gritting her teeth as she glared off at nothing with crossed arms and a general posture of anger and regret… which caused Ruby to immediately pull her into a side hug as her cape wrapped around the both of them. "Gah! Dammit Ruby warn me before you do that!"
"Nope! Then you'd dodge it!"
"Grr… ugh. Fine." Blake sighed, slumping in defeat before looking back at Sun. "Don't ask how she managed to shrug off having her head explode. It was… not a good moment. For any of us. We got cocky but it's not gonna happen again. Just… stay out of the way if you see a red haired bull faunus with a katana."
"... Duly noted. Right. Well. I'm gonna… go back to studying. For now. You said the meeting was next week?" Sun asked, seeming visibly disconcerted but still rather chill as he sat back down and pulled a textbook open- upside down and not at all paying attention to it as he sorta kinda tried to indicate that he didn't want to know more. "Like… south Vale-ish?"
"Yeah. Again, you don't have to come if you don't think it's safe," Blake nodded, giving Sun as many outs as he needed to realize that he didn't have to throw away his whole evening to go fight organized crime and/or militant terrorists. "No pressure."
"Yeah! We just thought you'd like to be included- no hard feelings if you're not up for it," Ruby continued, still hugging Blake. "Oh, right! Blake- I've been working on Petal Burst and I think I've got it down so it's not as nauseating anymore! Do you wanna try again?"
"... You just want an excuse to get back to Penny faster, don't you?" Blake deadpanned.
"I miss my wife, Blake. I miss her a lot," Ruby shot right back, pouring on the melodramatic melancholy attitude as she hugged Blake tighter. "Anyway! Thanks for joining anyway Sun! If you guys wanna back out tell us like the day before, okay?"
"Uh… sure?"
"Great okay thanks bye!"
"Wait Ruby no-!"
And with that Ruby and Blake vanished into a blur of rose petals that rocketed out of the open window with a rush of wind that sent the curtains flapping wildly and threw papers everywhere.
"... Man, Team RWBY sure is weird," Sun muttered, scratching his head as Neptune started cursing up a storm from his work being interrupted. He brightened up a moment later, though, hopping to his feet with a roguish grin. "Weird, but fun!"
