Chapter 104
"This has been… a bit of a disaster," Ozpin stated dryly as he reviewed the reports over the last night, grimacing as he threw the datapad down and folding his hands in his lap as he glanced at Glynda and Qrow, then stared at Ironwood with a hard look. "I admit it. The situation was handled poorly, and as much as it has resulted in the capture and incarceration of Adam Taurus, there were… far too many deaths. Far too many."
"On that we agree. What the hell is going on, Oz- this is a shitshow! Why hasn't Ruby Rose been brought in yet- or better, why hasn't she been k-" Ironwood started, slamming his hands down onto Ozpin's table with a furious glare… only to stop short as Qrow's Aura of wind and bleak death filled the room, the sound of steel shifting as he leveled Harbinger II at Ironwood without a second thought.
"The next words out of your better not be killed , or I'm going to take your empty head right off of its fucking shoulders, tin man," Qrow hissed, glaring heavily as his crimson eyes seemed to glow in the dark despite the well lit nature of the room, Harbinger II's gears whirring ominously as the blade began to curl back on itself in preparation for a real, serious fight. "You don't get to make that decision. Not now. Not ever. And if you think for a single gods damned moment that I'm going to let you execute my niece then-"
"Qrow! Settle down!" Glynda stepped in, standing between the two and halting their dick waving contest as she swung her riding crop around and flung both men back into their seats with a huff of displeasure. "James- don't you dare try to execute one of Beacon's students on a whim like this! What kind of a leader are you, that you'd think that's the appropriate response?"
"She's dangerous! She's a grimm in human form with Silver Eyes! She was, just tonight, mind controlled by Salem and used to nearly commit an atrocity, and it's a gods damned miracle that, out of everyone that got hurt tonight, it was the White Fang that bore the brunt of the casualties!" Ironwood almost shouted, slamming his fist against the armrest of his chair as he looked around the room, gritting his teeth and tensing his fingers as his prosthetics whirred beneath his clothes. "What makes you think that thing is still a human instead of a plot by Salem to infiltrate our Kingdoms and sow chaos!?"
"That thing is my fucking niece! Her name is Ruby Rose, she's spent eleven fucking years as a half grimm, and she's a better person than you are , James," Qrow continued to glare, feathers growing along his cheek as his Aura continued to swirl around him, cape waving in the wind it generated as he held Harbinger II's handle in a death grip, planting the blade into the floor of the office as he tried very, very hard to not murder the General of the Atlesian Military.
"Please- calm yourselves. Yes, Ruby Rose is half grimm. Yes, what happened tonight caused a terrible amount of deaths even if they were those of the White Fang. Yes, Salem's direct intervention has caused Ruby's mental state to become compromised… but you're forgetting the most important thing, James," Ozpin stated, projecting footage of the fight into the air as he compiled the reports together- CCTV footage from the entire area showing the fight from multiple angles and timestamps. On the screen, the three members of Ozpin's conspiracy watched as the thing that was Ruby Rose fought against her own friends, family, and loved ones- the rest of their group alternating between Adam Taurus and taking out the remaining Rosebuds in the arena they'd made. "The rest of Team RWBY and Penny knew exactly how to handle the incident. They cordoned off the area, prevented the spawned grimm from leaving their barrier, dispatched them efficiently, and managed to keep Miss Rose on the ropes despite the sheer power of her grimm form. You may also notice, James, that Miss Polendina was noticeably less damaged and injured than everyone else. Even in the depths of her madness, Miss Rose hesitated to fight her significant other, and applied noticeably less force against her team and Team CMNE than she applied in the few times her attack path crossed with Mister Taurus."
He paused, steepling his hands and pursing his lips as he stared between Ironwood and Qrow. "That said, she caused quite a lot of damage, and the fight itself caused the collapse of the entire warehouse, killing two civilians and twenty White Fang members. While I commend their effort to spread the efforts of their crime fighting among a larger group… I cannot say that they were entirely successful, even with the significant amount of intelligence they recovered."
"What intelligence?" Ironwood asked, narrowing his eyes as he leaned forward. "How could they have possibly acquired more information about the White Fang's movements than the entire Atlesian Military?"
"Because they actually managed to infiltrate a meeting instead of just goose stepping down the street and blaring war horns," Qrow snorted, leaning back and settling into a cocky slouch with one leg up and resting on the seat of his chair as he allowed his Aura to relax. "Guess we actually have a confirmation of what's going on in Mountain Glenn now?"
"Yes, actually. Salem's forces, in conjunction with the White Fang that they have suborned from Adam Taurus, are planning to use the subway lines connecting Mountain Glenn and Vale in order to perform targeted strikes in key locations around the city, opening holes wide enough for the grimm to invade and using the resultant chaos to cause the fall of the city. If not for the efforts of Teams RWBY+P, CMNE, JNPR, and SSSN, we would not have this intelligence, though by now we may have to assume that her forces will have decided to follow a different plan of attack instead of continuing with what we already know," Ozpin nodded slowly, eyes gazing into the middle distance as he tried to think of the appropriate response to the situation at hand, the video screen hovering beside him continuing to play the video footage from earlier that night.
"Hold on- what's that?" Ironwood asked after a moment, leaning forward as Ruby's flash of silver eyes filled the screen and completely blew out the camera feed for several long moments in a sea of white. "After the flash of silver light- Taurus was captured with severe trauma and almost half of his body missing. His weapon wasn't recovered after the attack, what the hell happened to him?"
"You haven't heard?" Qrow huffed, shaking his head. "Remember how Adam lost an arm to Ruby? Turns out the lil bastard lost a bit more than just an arm . She mauled him good, and apparently he replaced a good chunk of what was missing with grimm stuff. Including some kind of freak thing that replaced his weapon somehow. Never seen a grimm like it before, but it got burned away by Ruby's eyes and everything."
"Speaking of- how is it that she can use her eyes while in grimm form?" Glynda asked, pushing her glasses up slowly as she stared at the feed, frowning in a mix of disgust and worry at the sight of her student's bestial form slumping to the ground, her human body half grown out of the beast's skull while the some fifty eyesockets dotting the creature's body smoked and burned, empty pits full of char that dissolved away into nothingness over the course of several minutes. "It seems to cause her severe injury, even- she seemed to be completely blind for a moment until she somehow regenerated them."
"Miss Rose is… an interesting scientific study. Both Mister and Miss Polendina have expressed interest in conducting a thorough examination of her biology, though I suppose that will have to wait. Speaking of- James, I know you were compiling a list of teammates to accompany Penny to the Vytal Festival. I believe it imprudent to do so now." Ozpin shrugged ever so slightly, never once losing his aura of calm and cool (and slight befuddlement) as he spoke to the room.
"What- why? Why now, when she's already been compiling reports for me to read while I selected her team? I already had a team selected for her…" Ironwood asked, furrowing his brow in confusion.
"Separating Miss Polendina from Miss Rose at this point in time may prove detrimental to both of their emotional states- they seemed to be quite inseparable, moreso than usual, when they arrived back on campus, and while normally Miss Rose is the one who growls at people when they seem to be some threat to Miss Polendina's wellbeing, tonight it seems the opposite has occurred," Ozpin answered, recalling the way that Penny had growled at him with a crimson flash in her eyes as she held an unconscious Ruby in her arms, carrying the shorter girl in a bridal carry while Floating Array hung in a dazzling, deadly formation above and around her body. "She seemed quite adamant that she be given some time to make sure Miss Rose's mental well-being recovers as soon as possible. Given the circumstances, I'm inclined to agree. Perhaps closer to the Festival itself, but I think they should stay together for now."
"I've already modified their schedules," Glynda nodded, pulling her clipboard out of seemingly nowhere and checking something off with a strike of pencil on paper. "They can take the next week off, but I'm hoping they'll at least be able to perform half days after that."
"Ruby's tough. She'll bounce back… she just… might need some time to stop beatin' herself up over a bad situation," Qrow muttered, then stood. "Cinder's answer is still no, by the way. Is that all? Because I need to sleep."
"Well, the other thing is that I'm docking your pay for the next two weeks for directly tampering with Beacon's security net," Ozpin deadpanned dryly. "But other than that, you may go."
".... Yeah, that's fair."
And with that, the meeting ended with Qrow throwing himself out of the window. As usual.
