Kenji let the cloud of dust and aftershock of the massive explosion wash over him as his robe billowed around him as the gale force winds tried to tear the fabric off his shoulders. But before the smoke could clear Kenji heard a distressed squawk and a nonverbal call for help echoed inside his mind.
Spinning on his heel, Kenji ran in the direction of the distress call, and a second later, he broke through the obscuring dust cloud to see his vulture companion now on the ground with one wing clearly broken clutched against its body. But despite its injury the abyssal creature wasn't out of the fight as, with a surprising amount of speed it sprinted across the uneven terrain, often appearing no more than a dark blue and red streak as it avoided the slew of force projectile thrown at it by the Brute who looked far worse than when Kenji had last laid eyes on him.
The man's clothing was hanging off him in long, tattered scraps soaked in blood while his naked green skin was burned black in batches, no doubt having suffered heavily from the vulture's explosive barrage.
Seeing him run over the Vulture made a beeline for Kenji before coming to a stop by his side and letting out an indignant screech that had a surprising amount of emotion behind it.
"I was busy," Kenji responded without thinking about the fact he was talking to a glorified turkey, "You were doing fine on your own."
The vulture screeched as it gestured to its injured wing.
An angry roar interrupted their conversation, and Kenji looked over to the brute, who raised his hammer high above his head before bringing it down on the earth with a boom, sending a cascading wave of razor-sharp stone and dirt across the ground around him in a complete circle.
Staring down the violent wave of earth Kenji bent his knees before launching himself forward to meet the attack head on. Building up his momentum as he flew across the ground Kenji looked over to see the vulture matching him stride for stride its pitch black eyes full of vengeance and rage.
Turning back as the cascading wave of rock and stone rose up, ready to crash down on them, Kenji pushed off the ground and jumped, clearing the attack and soaring high into the air.
Staring down at the brute, Kenji's arms snapped out as he sent two daggers flying down at the man. In response, the man sent out a short shockwave, knocking the daggers off course but not powerful enough to interrupt Kenji's descent.
Snapping his fingers, Kenji caused the knives' to explode, creating a cloud of dark purple smoke.
The brute frowned and readied his hammer to send another shockwave when a dark shape pierced through the smokescreen, forcing him to dodge as a razor-sharp wing passed through the space where his neck had just been.
Stumbling back, the brute planted his feet and spun on the vulture that was about to take off, running ready to smash the bird into a paste when a foot slammed into his jaw with enough force to send a couple of bloodstained teeth flying into the air.
Staggering back, the brute's vision went spotty, but it cleared with a jolt of pain as a dagger plunged into his shoulder but stopped as it hit his collarbone. Roaring in agony, the brute reached up and closed his massive hand around Kenji's wrist, but when he went to snap it like a couple of dry twigs, he felt nothing.
Swinging around, Kenji felt his arm rotate almost three hundred degrees in its socket, but he felt no discomfort from the motion as his foot flashed out, hammering down on the dagger sticking out of the brute's shoulder like a loose nail and sending it through the collar bone.
A sickening crunch echoed through the air, followed by an equally agonizing scream as the hand around Kenji's wrist loosened and he slipped free. Using the brute as a springboard, Kenji flipped and landed in a crouch a few feet away. The man collapsed to one knee, and his hammer slammed against the floor.
Through gritted teeth and foaming spittle the brute slowly rose back to his feet, one arm hanging limply and hammer forgotten as he stared Kenji down, "W-who…the hell are you?!"
Standing up as well, Kenji stared the man down before answering, "I don't know…not anymore."
The brute snarled at the answer and opened his mouth to respond when a distance sound reached them that quickly grew louder with each passing second.
The brute's head whipped around as a flash of fear crossed his face, and Kenji followed his gaze to see some kind of plane flying towards them at top speed, "Shit, a response team!"
Kenji ignored the brute as the vehicle drew closer, and he realized it wasn't a plane at all but a massive carrier jet that seemed capable of carrying several passengers and a hefty load of cargo.
Soon, the dull sound of the engines turned into a roar as the jet started to circle around them before turning on its floodlights, which beamed down Kenji and the brute.
"Warning! You have been found outside city limits and possess an unregistered Alpha Weapon. Surrender yourself now and be prepared to be taken into custody. Any attempt at fleeing or retaliation will be met with force."
A blaring voice came from overhead as the jet started to descend, whipping up a storm. The stream of air from its jets sent rocks and debris flying in every direction.
"Fuck this I'm not going to the lower levels!" The brute screamed as he made a break for it, covering a surprising amount of ground in a short time.
"Please, a chump like you wouldn't last a day in that hell hole."
Kenji's head snapped up as the a door on the side of the carrier jet opened and a winged form flew out of the like a missile shooting down to the earth with a vengeance.
The brute whipped around and froze to stare up at his impending doom, "No…no it can't be…you're not supposed to be here! Why are you here?!"
"Tough luck," The same voice echoed out somehow above all the noise the pursuer slammed into the Brute who had one last chance to scream before a plume of dust shot up into the air as the missile slammed into him.
But the dust was cleared a second later revealing a stunning figure behind which spread two leathery wings covered in dark red scales.
"Are you going to run as well?" The pursuer asked as they stepped off the brute's still form and turned to face Kenji who stood stock still unmoving and unresponsive.
When Kenji didn't respond the pursuer snorted, "Fine, suit yourself."
In a blink the pursuer launched themselves across the ground covering the distance between Kenji and them in the blink of an eye, but still Kenji didn't react even as the woman thrust her claws hand forward ready to sink her claw into his skin.
But all Kenji could do was stare at her face as a thousand memories from what seemed like a lifetime ago flashed through his mind as a wellspring of repressed emotions burst forth at the sight of her, "Toga."
The pursuer froze her elongated and razor-sharpened nails resting only a few inches away from Kenji's face, "W-what did you just say?"
Reaching up, Kenji placed his hand against the side of Toga's face, his shadowy hand contrasting against her alabaster skin, "Toga…I finally found you."
A fearful, but at the same time hopeful look flashed across Toga's face as she reached up with a shaky hand and grabbed Kenji' wrist, "Kenji…is that you?"
