Capítulo 27: Wedding plus one

Suzette deftly pulled up a chair in front of Alana, who was indulging in a mouthful of donuts.

With a poised demeanor, she interjected,

"By the way," and flashed an expectant smile at her companion.

As soon as Suzette began speaking, Alana hastily consumed the donuts, interrupting her mid-sentence and preventing her from finishing her thought.

"I had a hunch that you were plotting something,"

she remarked, setting the donut down on the flimsy paper plate and opting for a swig of the bottled water instead.

"Give me a moment to say what is on my mind. Will you be taking a leave of absence? Michael's friend has a wedding invitations and he needed a plus one, so you can be the lucky companion. I have never seen you with anyone else,  Perhaps you could consider accompanying Michael's friends instead. "

With a hopeful grin, she contemplates her plan.

Alana's arms formed an X as she firmly declined the proposal, leaving no room for doubt.

"Lana, I beg you!" she pleaded, fearing that she may have inadvertently divulged Alana's consent to Michael.

The vehement of Alana's response was a resounding

"HELL NAW!"

With a slight roll of her eyes, Alana pressed on with her task of completing the patients' notes. The pet parents were scheduled to arrive in just an hour to retrieve their beloved companions. As she perused the list of prescriptions that required dispensing, her gaze swept over each line with a practiced efficiency. With a deft hand, she composed a message to the technicians, instructing them to prepare the necessary medications.

"I would be happy to cover a weeknight shift for you, if that works for your schedule."

With no other options available, Suzette found herself compelled to volunteer for the graveyard shift, fully aware of the sacrifices she would have to make. Alana's fingers ceased their rhythmic tapping on the keyboard as she leaned back in her office chair, her gaze fixed intently on Suzette's face.

"Three weeks". Alana was well aware that convincing Suzette was a lost cause, given her fondness for frequenting bars and her gregarious nature at social gatherings.

"DEAL!!"  With a nod of her head, Suzette accepted, leaving Alana utterly mystified.

"Tell me, who might this gentleman be for whom your willingness to assist knows no limits? "

With a weary expression, Alana gazed at her.

With a giggle, she suggested,

"He happens to be Michael's close friend, and I believe he would be an ideal match for you."

"Dont even think about it"

With unwavering focus, she persisted in her task until the very end. At long last, she breathed a sigh of relief as she carefully placed the medication scripts in their designated location.

"Although I understand your perspective, it may be beneficial to have a partner in your life. It seems as though being alone is an everyday thing for you."

Suzette was not privy to much of Alana's past, in contrast to Shin, who had attended the same university as her and had crossed paths with Connor on a few occasions.

Alana's face fell as she came to the realization that she was by herself. Trembling with trepidation, she recoils at the mere thought of re-entering the dating scene. The haunting memory of being betrayed in the past looms over her like a dark cloud, casting a shadow of doubt and fear over any potential future relationships. In the aftermath of Connor's betrayal, she found herself grappling with a profound sense of inadequacy and self-doubt. After enduring the pain of heartbreak once before, she resolves to remain unattached and prioritize her own well-being. She pushed the thoughts back of her mind and pretended it does not bothering her.

"I have completed my tasks for the day. The technician will be providing an explanation for the cases we encountered last night. As for me, I shall be taking my leave," she declared, grabbing hold of the entire box of delectable donuts and playfully sticking her tongue out at Suzette.

With a box of donuts in hand and a yawn escaping her lips, Alana emerged from her office. As she glanced over, she observed Melanie and the other skilled technicians conducting their morning handovers with precision. Her eyes then fell upon Suzette, who had thoughtfully provided breakfast and coffee for the team. Alana's face lit up with a smile as she observed Suzette's kindness towards the staff member. The aspect that she finds most appealing about her work environment is the equitable treatment of technicians by the doctors, regardless of any hierarchical distinctions.

She basked in the adoration of the crowd, waving back with equal enthusiasm.

"Good morning, everyone! , Take care," she uttered softly before stepping out of the clinic and making her way towards the parking lot. As she settled into the driver's seat, she carefully positioned the box of donuts on the empty passenger seat beside her. Without missing a beat, she reached for one of the sweet treats and savored each delectable bite as she prepared to hit the road.

She backed up her Volvo with a donut still lingering in her mouth and made her way back home to her cozy bed and soft pillow.

With her eyelids drooping and exhaustion setting in, she cranks up the volume on her music and belts out the lyrics, all while munching on a mouthful of delectable donuts. As the vehicle approaches the intersection, the traffic light abruptly shifts to a crimson hue. Simultaneously, a neighboring car gradually comes to a stop alongside her. Despite her intention to turn right, the prevailing traffic regulations at these particular lights prohibit right turns during a red signal. With unwavering patience, she waited for it.

A sense of being observed crept over her, causing her to pivot and direct her gaze towards a nearby vehicle. It was then that she discerned Connor's unwavering stare fixed upon her. She couldn't believe her eyes - there was no mistaking it. Connor was in the company of another woman. Once more, she shifted her gaze and the traffic light shifted from red to green. With a sense of urgency, she swiftly veered to the right and accelerated, ensuring that she wasn't being pursued.

At the sight of her, Connor was momentarily dazzled. He had been on the search for her, but it seemed as though everyone was keeping their lips sealed. As the car honked, it jolted him from his thoughts. Dawn's grip on his arm tightened as he swiftly accelerated, determined to catch up with the freight that he had previously delayed.

As he drove, Alana occupied his thoughts incessantly. With her short hair and a beaming smile, she appears to be in high spirits. Why? Shouldn't she be consumed by sorrow and despair? Does this imply that she is currently involved with someone else? Has she truly moved on? His grip on the steering wheel was tight, revealing his knuckles that had turned white.

Dawn observed the alterations on his demeanor and instinctively reached out to soothe him, placing her hand gently on his lap. In a moment of clarity, he released his grip, recognizing that his emotions had gotten the best of him.

With the knowledge that Alana is presently in the capital, it becomes clear why her whereabouts have eluded him in Beaufort.

The absence of her presence left him yearning for the sound of her voice, the brilliance of her ideas, and the radiance of her spirit. She shines like a lantern, illuminating the world of those around her. Despite his admiration for Dawn, he remains desirous of Alana's affection. There is a possibility that if he were to implore her to return to him, she may harbor a desire for it in secret. There is no need for Dawn to be informed.

His determination to win back Alana knows no bounds, regardless of the length of time it may take. Should she already be in a committed relationship, it would necessitate her departure from said partnership. The mere notion of another person laying a hand on her sent him into a tailspin once more. He whisked Dawn away to the Killiam Corporations and promptly departed for the condominium that was to become their new home.
