When Ren's consciousness comes to, she finds herself amongst an endless amount of luminous clusters spread about a voidlike expanse. Just as she's wondering where she is, Ren hears the disembodied voice say in her head, [This is the multiverse network that we'll use to navigate to the desired simulations.]
"These are all different multiverses?" Ren asks yet isn't sure how since she doesn't seem to have a body. "Is it because I'm just a data string of consciousness or whatever?" she accidentally thinks aloud, as there's currently no barrier between speech and thought.
[Yes and, more or less, yes.]
"Weird. So, what now?"
[Now, you may make suggestions concerning the type of world you wish to enter and I'll find one that best meets the conditions. However, don't go overboard with your request.]
Finding it a pleasant surprise, Ren asks with interest, "I get to pick? Really?" Unwittingly she adds her additional thoughts, "Not even in the stories I've read is such a thing common."
[Yes,] the voice responds while making a note.
"Mm," Ren hums as she ponders the type of universe she'd like to live in. "I'd want there to be magic. I don't want to live life weak and without my abilities," she adds, remembering her pitiful death. "And... Are there any universes that there were novels of in my universe? Such as Harry Sotter or A Song of Frost and Flame. Well, maybe not those ones... But, you get what I mean, right?"
After a couple moments of silence, the voice says, [Searching.]
Ren waits patiently as she admires the view however, after an unknown amount of time, she comments to herself, "I suppose it would take a while to check all these universes."
Uncomfortable with her thoughts being broadcast, Ren continues to clear her mind and lose herself in the view.
With her mind unburdened a strange sense of serenity gradually fills her.
The vast expanse of nothingness surrounds her like a blanket yet Ren unexpectedly finds herself feeling subtly connected to everything.
"...Probably imagining it."
Despite her best efforts, thoughts eventually surface from her curious mind.
"If those are simulations, then am I in a simulation now?"
"Have I always been in a simulation?"
"Have I been approached by the Creator?"
"Or is it just some adolescent player trying to mess with me?"
"Does this Rumpelstiltskin have some kind of ability to create simulations?"
None of her musings are answered by the mysterious entity that now seems to share her mind.
Eventually, Ren grows restless with how long it's taking and calls out, "Oi, Rumpelstiltskin! Are you done yet? Do you not have some kind of search engine to make it go quicker? Can you not multitask? Even I grow bored after so much nothingness."
Ren doesn't expect a response however, after several long moments, she hears, [I'll see what I can do. So far, I did find one multiverse that could meet your parameters.]
"Finally! Which novel is it like?"
[Based on the Aarne-Thompson-Uther index and the Motif-Index of Folk-]
"Stop, stop," Ren interrupts the perceived word vomit. "Can you just get to the point? I don't need the technical babble."
[...] The disembodied entity searches for the most well known version, [Snow White.]
"..." Measuring her thoughts, Ren comments, "Somewhat bland but I suppose it could be worse."
[Would you like to enter? If not, I'll continue to search for an unknown duration,] the voice states plainly.
"Alright, alright. I get it, Rumpelstiltskin," Ren responds. "Everything should be fine so long as I avoid the Queen. No matter the role I'm landed with, she's best avoided." After a few moments, a new thought comes to her, "Unless I am the evil Queen... Well, Only one way to find out: send me in." Ren suddenly gets the idea to ask the voice about which role she'll get however it's only partially formed before being cut off. "Oh, right! Can't you tell me whi-"
...
Darkness.
Pain.
Those are the only things Ren remembers when she wakes.
The smell of petrichor, earthy decay, and rust surrounds her.
A deep, penetrating chill has settled into her body yet she continues to stay there awhile coming into herself.
Her sore, earth coated body curls into itself in an instinctual yet doomed effort to shelter some heat.
'Cold.'
After cautiously opening her eyes against the bright sunlight, Ren finds herself in a lush forest with an overcast sky. The light burns at her eyes, causing sharp pains to shoot through her head; the dark strands veiling her face do little to shield her from the perceived brightness. Ignoring this, Ren attempts to sit up but quickly finds her head in her hands — as if trying to keep it together — and sinking to the ground as disorientation overtakes her.
When the spinning slows to a stop, Ren tries again. Her stiff, weak limbs cause her to accumulate several abrasions and bruises in her failed attempts.
Eventually, Ren finally stumbles shakily to her feet with the aid of a nearby tree. It's only then that she becomes aware of how dry her throat and empty her stomach has long been. Her throat and centre increasingly ache like fire devouring her from within, eating away at her very being. Even thoughts are consumed by the hunger before they can manifest.
A nearby sound grasps her attention.
Drawn to it, Ren stumbles her way through the forest until she comes to a shallow stream. A thought manages to surface through her rampant hunger.
'Liquid.'
Instinctively she falls to the moist earth beside it and drinks desperately, cupping the clear water in her hands to drink from them. While it coats her parched throat it does nothing to quench her thirst nor to ease her blaring head pains as the sounds around her progressively amplify to clamouring torture.
'Food,' the thought frantically escapes as Ren's head snaps from the stream to look around. Some small animals can be heard nearby yet, upon observing them, Ren judges herself too weak to catch such elusive prey.
She takes a moment to try to remember anything before now but that only causes her migraine to worsen.
'Food,' she thinks while shaking away the previous trail of thought, trying to refocus what limited brain power she has, and slowly continuing on through the forest.
Time strains as she makes her way through the forest.
The difficulty in her lungs grows increasingly painful.
Her skin feels like it's slowly burning in spite of her body feeling frozen.
When the clouds are full of colours, Ren comes to a dirt path and starts stumbling along it. Food is all that occupies her mind as her aching body keeps moving.
'Dying...'
'Need food...'
'Food...'
'Food...'
'Must eat...'
'Food...'
'Dying...'
'Need food...'
'Food...'
'Food...'
'Food, food, food, food, food, food, food, food, food, food, food, food, food, food, food, food, food, food, food, food, food, food, food, fo-'
Up ahead two figures walk on the road towards Ren.
The exhausted limbs that drag her along suddenly fill with purpose as they move closer together and Ren becomes overly aware of the drumming of her own heart.
Her mind grows hazy and her breathing becomes but shallow, needy gasps.
When the two figures are several metres away they stop and stare at the dirty, naked girl who continues forward. Their lips twist as their eyes scan her body taking in her small breasts, slender waist, wide hips, and round bottom.
Their scent catches in her dry lungs as she passes, rousing her from her daze.
The taller one calls out, "Need directions?"
Ren stops, measures her breathing, and cranes her head their way yet remains silent.
"What?" They move closer as he continues, "Can't talk?" They both chuckle to themselves while Ren stares back at them in silence. Despite the disparity in their height, both strangers tower over her petite figure.
The other, smaller, one slips his arm around Ren, "Why don't we show you the way? We could help each other out."
Something inside Ren churns.
The one in front of Ren lifts her hair and stares at her chest with hungry eyes.
Another churn.
'You...'
"Such long hair," the smaller one takes some of Ren's long, dark hair into his free hand before setting it down and letting his rough fingers glide down her body.
Churn, 'You smell...'
Ren crosses her arms, grasping her elbows in an effort to contain herself. The larger one in front of Ren grabs her wrists and moves them apart forcefully, causing Ren's eyes to snap to him and stare sharply. The smaller one beside Ren takes her wrists from the other and twists them behind her back, causing Ren to let out a weak groan in alarm.
"Before the fun," the bigger one in front says, "how about a kiss?" He takes her head in his hands and moves in.
Churn...
A predatory glint crosses her eyes, 'You smell delicious.'
His lips smash against hers and his tongue licks at her. Unexpectedly, Ren opens her mouth, granting his tongue access before biting down.
Hard.
Hot liquid rushes into her mouth, slowly filling Ren with a subtle growing warmth. She earnestly sucks on what remains of his tongue, letting his essence fill her. Even with her best efforts not to waste any, some spills down the sides of her mouth and trails down in tepid streaks. The man tries to retch himself from her but Ren had already clamped down on him with hands that easily broke free of their fleshy restraints.
Ren loses herself as she drinks her fill.
When finished, Ren finally registers how the smaller one, that was previously restraining her, had escaped when Ren was absorbed with her meal. 'You won't get away,' she thinks while letting out a wailing hiss and drops the vessel she'd previously been feasting upon to turn and search for her dessert. Without Ren to gorge on the excess, the half eaten meal starts drowning in his own blood.
Further down the road, Ren spots her dessert running away frantically while occasionally looking back with wide eyes, utterly perplexed by the turn of events. Without hesitation, Ren chases him down with terrifying speed. She soon appears in front of him, causing her prey to fall back in alarm. "No," he breathes and tries to scurry away but her stride is faster. Ren catches him with ease and pulls him in intimately. Horror and befuddlement befall his face as she caresses it, one hand weaving his hair between ravenous fingers.
"Before the fun," she licks her lips, tasting the blood that's already there. She then leans in and takes, what feels like, her first deep breath as she presses her body to his. Breathily she whispers in his ear, "How about a kiss?" The irony of her words barely have time to register before she abruptly latches onto his neck. Her sharp teeth pierce his skin — occasionally gnawing at the wound — causing the thick warm liquid to flood her mouth.
'This,' Ren thinks in ecstasy while her prey desperately strains against her. 'This is what I needed.'
Her mind numbs as heat fills her at last, spreading everywhere throughout her being.
A warm hue gradually returns to her pallid skin.
Caught in the moment she barely registers his pleading murmurs preceding the limp of death. Nevertheless, she continues indulging herself, savouring the feeling of revitalisation, before finally releasing her prey and wandering back to her earlier meal.
Blood continues to leak from his tongueless mouth, flowing onto the dirt path. The life gone from his eyes.
"That's a good look for you," Ren comments in a voice raspy from disuse while cocking her head to the side and letting a small smirk creep to her bloody lips.
Welcome to my version of a grim, dark fairytale ~
In case you're wondering why they didn't notice the blood in her hair when they were close by and touching it, it's because only the hair on the back of her head is stiff with blood while the rest is just has some twigs and dirt in it.
