Capítulo 72: Traitor

As Blink looked at Max, the initial panic slowly subsided. Taking a deep breath, she explained, "The hound's sensing range for Mutant positions isn't that far. I've teleported several times to shake them off, so I believe I haven't exposed this place."

Max nodded casually. "If they find us here, it's fine. But why are you being targeted by them?"

"It's probably an accident," Blink replied. "I wanted to go back to my adoptive parents. They've taken in many Mutant orphans. Somehow, the hounds discovered them, and they've been on the run since."

"It seems the Hound Project has divisions beyond Trask Industries. The two-headed Hound you mentioned is likely a more advanced stage. The project resumed after Campbell's death, and it's not a coincidence they're targeting a nearby Mutant base."

Blink instantly showed concern. "I'll inform Lorna and the others. Blink, be ready to take us to your foster parents." Max understood Blink's worry and promptly called Lorna to alert them.

Blink opened the portal again, and Max stepped through. Though Blink could open portals continuously, there was still a distance limitation, requiring visibility to open the portal.

Portals kept opening and closing, changing locations until they arrived at a country road, not far from a house.

Blink hurriedly ran towards the house. The closer she got, the more unsettled she became.

It was too quiet.

Upon entering the house, the living room was empty. Blink whispered her adoptive parents' names, but there was no response. She stomped upstairs, finding no one there either. Blink, with Lauren in the living room pointing toward the utility room, Max standing at the door, continued his search.

Blink's pace slowed, each step sapping her energy. Max stayed silent, not stopping her, only turning slightly to the side.

The smell of blood became overwhelming.

Blood stained the utility room floor, and the lifeless bodies of an elderly couple lay there.

In an instant, Blink burst into tears.

They were too late.

"Why? They were just ordinary humans, adopting Mutant orphans. Why wouldn't they be spared?" Blink's whispers turned into anguished screams.

Max reached out, embracing Blink as she wept.

Silently comforting her. After a long while, Blink pulled away from Max's arms.

"I want to avenge them!"

"Good!" Max nodded decisively.

"This is my affair, my responsibility..." Blink began but was cut off by Max.

"You are a member of my team. Your affairs are our affairs."

"Yes, we are a small team!" Lauren added with the same determination, realizing that if Max hadn't rescued them in time, Campbell might have taken her parents too.

"Buy them first, and then we...revenge!"

After several hours, the trio solemnly laid to rest the twinkling adoptive parents in a nearby resting place.

Wiping away tears, Blink turned to Max. "What shall we do now?"

"They must have targeted more than just this place. I'll start by consulting Lorna about the situation here. They should have information on the locations of other Mutant organizations in the vicinity. Perhaps we can catch them off guard," Max suggested, retrieving his phone to call Lorna.

The phone rang several times before connecting, the background noise suggesting a hectic environment.

"Max? You said it. The hounds attacked several underground bases. I gathered a lot of people who escaped. Those guys planted hounds as internal traitors in the underground base, and the locations were all exposed," Lorna quickly informed, her voice eager.

"Do you know where they are?"

"Not sure."

After a brief pause, Max handed the phone to Blink, instructing him to guide Lorna in identifying nearby underground bases. After a while, Blink nodded, signaling Max that they had the information.

"Tell her to hang up," Max directed.

Blink prepared to open a portal.

After a prolonged moment, the portal emerged, revealing what appeared to be a church.

Exiting the portal, Blink stumbled slightly.

"I'm fine." Blink reassured Max and Lauren, gritting their teeth as they shook their head.

"It seems like this place hasn't been discovered yet."

There were no signs of destruction in the surroundings, and an eerie quietness enveloped the area. Inside the church, an elderly man kept a vigilant eye on them, clutching a shotgun.

"We located this place based on information from the Mutant underground base. Have you experienced any attacks?" Lauren inquired.

The old man in the church sighed in relief, eagerly opening the door. "You've finally arrived. I don't have a car to transport them, so I had to hide them."

As he spoke, the old man led them to the back of the church, where an abandoned container sat.

With some effort, the old man pulled it apart, revealing an empty interior.

"Don't worry; they are your own people. They'll take you to a safe place." The old man reassured them, and a sudden transformation occurred within the container.

More than a dozen people nervously emerged from the hiding place. Men and women, old and young, they soon realized there was no vehicle in sight.

"No car? How do we leave?"

Observing the group, Max spoke calmly, "Identify the traitors among you before we take you away."

"Traitors?" The dozen people exchanged uncertain glances. Was there betrayal among them?

"I know who the traitor is."

A blonde girl spoke softly, approaching Max's side.

"You know?" Max raised an eyebrow, and she leaned in, whispering into Max's ear, "The man with the backpack, he's the traitor."

Surprised, Max examined the group. Indeed, there was a man with a backpack, blending in with his unassuming sweater and hood.

"How did you know?" Max inquired.

"I can read other people's minds," she replied, revealing her telepathic ability.
