Many soldiers had densely surrounded the base, with tank muzzles aimed at the room where Blink and others were located. Fighter jets hovered in the air, ready with missiles, creating a firepower display equivalent to a war zone.
Inside the room, everyone anxiously watched the unfolding battles outside, especially those recently rescued. Their urgent desire to escape clashed with the reality of being confined in the room. The imminent threat of artillery attacks loomed, and the room's occupants feared for their lives.
"They are back," Sophie and Phoebe said in unison.
As their voices faded, Max and Esme entered the room.
Max opened the sliding door with a wave of his hand.
"Take these people away, head directly to Lorna's side. I will join you later and open the door to let you out," Max instructed Lauren.
"Why are you staying?" Blink questioned.
"I haven't found the person in charge of this project yet," Max replied.
"Then I'm staying!"
The ongoing Hound Project had led to the deaths of Blink's adoptive parents, and upon hearing that the person in charge hadn't been found, Blink refused to leave.
"He's dead."
"He tried to escape when the prisoners broke out."
"I killed him."
The three voices of Esme resonated, and Phoebe was the last to speak.
"Are you sure?"
"Absolutely!"
The three affirmed in unison.
"Then go."
With the person in charge now deceased, there was no need to remain. For Blink, exacting revenge by killing the project's leader and thwarting the Hound Plan was the most fitting conclusion. After all, surviving as adoptive parents, no matter the circumstances, was no longer an option.
Blink guided them into different spaces one by one. As soon as they entered, a loud bang echoed, breaking the wall and forcefully throwing several people who had been approaching out of the room.
Gunfire erupted, and missiles were launched from the fighter jets in the air. The thermal imaging technology revealed the number of people in the room, prompting an immediate and aggressive attack.
"Lauren."
Max called out softly, and Lauren quickly shielded the crowd, extending his hand.
In an instant, the surrounding air condensed to form a transparent force field, effectively blocking the incoming gunfire and missiles.
Explosions rattled outside the force field, and Lauren gritted his teeth to endure.
"Hurry," Max shouted, prompting others to go o into his dimensional space.
Observing their retreat, Max called out to Blink, "I plan to let you open a portal to return these things. Can you handle it?"
Blink glanced outside and nodded determinedly. "Yes!"
"Lauren, fall back."
Lauren obeyed, and Blink took charge.
As shells and missiles approached rapidly, Blink remained intensely focused. The portal in her hand expanded, covering the entire wall. Previously, her portals were the size of a person, but now it seemed to span the entire wall.
"Ah ah ah ah ah!"
Shouting hoarsely, cannonballs collided with the portal, exploding on the other side just above their heads.
Explosions resounded outside, accompanied by soaring flames and the ground shaking.
Retracting the portal, Blink weakly collapsed, supported by Max.
"Gone!"
Max grinned, holding Blink as they, along with Lauren, entered the different space.
This time, both Lauren and Blink performed exceptionally well.
The car slowly drove out, providing a clear view of the aftermath from the different space.
Several tanks were completely destroyed, and the wreckage of fighter jets burned not far away, creating chaos.
Mutant underground base.
Trucks materialized directly at the base. After ensuring no trackers were present and confirming the absence of infiltrators, they opened the doors to release the occupants. The already crowded base became even busier as Lorna and others quickly attended to the newcomers.
Certainly, they won't lay the blame on Max for bringing in so many people once again. After all, it was their fellow Mutants who came to the rescue. The fundamental goal of this organization revolves around aiding Mutants.
"Is that so?"
Witnessing the descent of Esme and her two duplicates, Lorna, John, and the others couldn't help but be taken aback.
The three duplicates were identical.
"The Hound Project should be completely dismantled this time, but there might be hidden remnants. Moreover, our recent actions have stirred things up, and the ensuing Mutant assault will likely be formidable. Stay vigilant," Max discussed the current scenario with Lorna.
Lorna, indifferent to the Hound Project's demise, focused on the overall precarious situation of Mutants. Without the looming threat of the Hound Project, she believed their circumstances could improve.
"Where are you heading? I'll see you off," Max offered to the three Duoying Cuckoos.
With Sophie and Phoebe rescued, and the Hound Project obliterated, the mission objectives were accomplished. The presumed collaboration should naturally come to an end.
"We're just going to explore a bit."
"Check if the Hound Project is truly eradicated."
"Thanks for your help this time."
The three expressed their gratitude in unison.
"Alright."
Max, not eager to prolong their interaction, signaled for Blink and Lauren.
Max deliberately took a detour before finding a secluded spot to drop the sisters off, ensuring the secrecy of their location. Only then did he drive back home.
Returning home, Blink and Lauren retreated to their room to rest. The recent mission had drained them both physically and emotionally.
