Under Max's comforting presence, Lauren's sobs gradually subsided, but she clung tightly to Max's arm, seeking a sense of security.
"Andy's Ability Awakening..."
"The entire school collapsed, and he was terrified. I shielded him, called my parents to pack their things, and set a meeting point. The plan was to take Andy to find my parents and then call you. But, when I saw someone from the Sentry Secret Service, I... I had no choice but to separate from Andy, letting him go to his parents first while I distracted the Sentry Secret Service."
"After diverting them, I realized I had lost my phone somewhere. I didn't dare to wander around searching for Andy and my parents, so I ran here to hide. I thought you would definitely see the news and come to find me, so I stayed here without going out. But you really managed to locate me."
Lauren's emotions seemed to flare up again, and her grip on Max's arm tightened.
Max gently rubbed her head. A 16-year-old girl who dared to lead away the Sentry Secret Service in such a situation, yet remained frightened while hiding here when the situation was unknown—for nearly a whole day. Her mental resilience was commendable.
"In that case, call them first for an update, and then I'll take you to find them." Max handed his phone to Lauren.
Lauren made the calls, starting with her father, but there was no answer after several rings. Anxious, she hung up and called her mother, but again, no response. Finally, she desperately dialed Andy, but the outcome remained unchanged.
"What do we do? No one is answering," Lauren pleaded, looking at Max for guidance.
With no responses and uncertainty about their well-being, Lauren's only anchor was Max.
"Let's go and check."
Realizing Lauren's distress and her impending tears, Max didn't waste words. He opened the door, gesturing for Lauren to follow him into another space.
Max started the engine inside the car, with Lauren guiding the way.
Throughout the journey, Lauren remained uneasy. After about an hour, the car arrived at a suburban house.
"No sign of the Sentry Secret Service."
Max stated, got out of the car with Lauren, and entered the house. The interior was modest, indicating it had been vacant for some time.
Opening the door, Max and Lauren emerged from different spaces.
Lauren called out anxiously as soon as she stepped out.
Regrettably, there was no response.
She searched every nook and cranny, desperately hoping for a sign, but found nothing.
"How could this happen? Aren't they here yet?" Lauren turned to Max.
Max shook his head slightly, noting from certain details that someone had been there.
Seeing Max's gesture of denial, Lauren sank to the ground as if the last bit of hope had crumbled. Observing her, Max retrieved his phone and made a call.
As the call connected, Max's voice, tinged with a hint of discomfort, reached Lauren's ears.
"Changing the mission objective? Yes, but the price should also change."
After a brief conversation, Max ended the call and turned to Lauren. She was gazing up at him.
"The Sentry Secret Service has captured your parents and Andy, exposing your identity. They are on the verge of capturing you," Max stated casually, walking to the nearby sofa and taking a seat. "I previously intervened in their plans to capture Andy, and now the goal has shifted to you."
Lauren stared at Max, her expression blank, and then asked, "So, you want to capture me?"
"Rest today. Tomorrow, I'll take you to the Sentry Secret Service. My business with them will be concluded. Barring any complications, they'll detain you with your family," Max remarked. He paused, and Lauren's eyes flickered with hope. "Then, you can take the opportunity to rescue everyone, right?"
Max nodded.
Lauren breathed a sigh of relief. Despite the risks, this was an opportunity to prepare for her family's rescue. She trusted that Max had no reason to lie. However, a concern lingered – the cost.
Though Max hadn't disclosed the price, saving their family from the Sentry Secret Service couldn't be cheap. Despite her discreet savings, it might not be enough. Considering their assets might be frozen, Lauren couldn't help but worry.
Although Max didn't know why the Sentry Secret Service hadn't monitored their location, he didn't plan to change their resting place for the day. After a simple meal, Max retired to the master bedroom upstairs to practice his Ability.
He had become more adept with the double doors. Now, he contemplated how to open doors simultaneously from a greater distance, achieving the effect he had mentioned earlier.
Seated on the bed, Max gently waved his arms, and two doors materialized almost side by side. Entering one door led to a different space. Max turned around and emerged from the other door.
After a moment of contemplation, Max activated his ability once again.
One door materialized before him this time while the other appeared on the roof. Max entered the different space again, but a slight frown formed as he stared at the door above his head.
Getting out of the door above without the aid of tools proved challenging.
The different space seamlessly integrated with the world space, triggering a recollection of a previously overlooked issue in Max's mind.
Kitty, when utilizing her ability, experienced a suspended state. Without control, she would keep sinking. However, the different spaces seemed to possess an inherent attraction, allowing normal movement. Lauren had mentioned a unique energy within the different spaces. If Max could sense and master this energy, could it alter certain laws within his space?
Gravity, for instance.
Could he manipulate gravity to enable flight within his spaces?
