Emma was already up when Max stirred the next morning. Nothing out of the ordinary; he'd have breakfast downstairs as usual. Though Max appreciated the discipline of rising early, it sometimes robbed the morning of its charm. Grabbing his robe, he descended the stairs. As expected, Emma had breakfast ready downstairs, timing it perfectly with his awakening.
After a quick wash, Max joined her at the table.
"Everything good for today? I'm planning to head out and hunt for a job," Emma announced.
"Speaking of work, have you ever thought about what you want to do in the future?" Max inquired casually.
Emma nodded. "I want to be a teacher."
"A teacher?" Max chuckled softly. It made sense, given Emma's initiative in setting up a school akin to Xavier's School in the comics and later joining Xavier's School. Seems like the idea had been brewing since childhood.
"I suggest you keep studying. With more knowledge under your belt, you might have better chances of becoming a teacher," Max suggested.
Emma smiled but didn't reply. Did she go to college? Such thoughts didn't occupy her mind at the moment.
After breakfast, Emma packed her essentials before setting out to job hunt.
So far, Emma had portrayed herself to Max as an ordinary individual, never mentioning Abilities or Mutant status. Did Max pick up on that? His telepathy couldn't decipher Emma's thoughts on the matter. Progress seemed smooth so far. Max feared disrupting it by bringing it up hastily. Maybe he'd broach the topic when the timing felt right.
Around noon, Peggy made another appearance.
"Think it over," Max urged.
Taking a deep breath, Peggy replied, "I want to hear your information first. If it's valuable, I... I can agree to your request. But if not, I'll stick to your initial conditions. Just give me some time."
Max grinned, saying, "Leviathan is a special Soviet organization. You're investigating the theft of Howard's weapons, right? Howard was mistaken for a traitor. I can shed some light on that. Leviathan's stolen goods are involved, and Leviathan itself is a formidable adversary with deep roots. They'll be your primary challenge for a while."
Leviathan could be seen as HYDRA's precursor, much like the HYDRA linked to Red Skull. HYDRA went through numerous transformations to become the HYDRA seen in later Avengers narratives.
"In light of your message, watch your neighbors, those you've rescued, and your boss carefully," Max cautioned, his words making Peggy furrow her brow.
"What exactly do you mean by that?" she inquired.
"You're an excellent agent. I believe these hints alone are sufficient for you to analyze and adapt to the situation," Max replied with a smile, offering no further explanation.
Peggy's neighbor, Doty Underwood, is a Leviathan agent and her main adversary. Additionally, a professor Peggy will later save turns out to be affiliated with Leviathan. There's also someone with hypnotic abilities who is her boss and nearly caused the destruction of half the city.
While Peggy might be perplexed now, she'll undoubtedly be able to react when the time comes.
"So, now you can decide if this information is worth it," Max concluded, smiling at Peggy.
Is it worth it?
"I don't believe you're so interested in my kisses. The people around you, past and present, are pretty—prettier than me," Peggy said solemnly, her voice tinged with a hint of doubt. "What I don't understand is what draws you to me. I can sense that you're not really interested in me. But for this information, I'm willing to pay the price."
Max met her gaze with a smile as Peggy slowly rose and approached, then took a seat beside her. After a deep breath, Peggy leaned in and initiated a kiss.
It was devoid of any emotion, lacking in feeling.
After a moment, Peggy pulled back and stated, "I've paid the price. The items mentioned earlier should be enough for you to get what you want. If there are similar transactions in the future, I think this method of payment could work, don't you?"
"It depends on the value of our collaboration," Max replied with a faint smile. "To be honest, it wasn't as satisfying as I had imagined. I might need to up the ante next time."
Peggy said nothing more, rising from her seat and exiting the room.
Was her demeanor as calm as she claimed? After all, it was her first kiss. Perhaps she was using that calm facade to conceal her true feelings. As Peggy emerged from the room, she coincidentally encountered Emma's return.
Their eyes met briefly before Peggy spoke, pausing for a moment. "No matter what you think of him, his true nature isn't as straightforward as you believe."
Emma seemed taken aback by Peggy's unexpected revelation. "I only believe what I see," she replied tersely, prompting Peggy to depart without further discussion.
Upon entering the room, Emma noticed Max absently touching her lips, a look of realization crossing her face as she pieced together what had transpired.
"Have you found a suitable job?" Max inquired.
Emma shook her head. "I'm still looking. There are plenty of opportunities out there, but nothing's clicked yet. Who was she? She mentioned outside that your true nature isn't as simple as it seems."
"What do you think?" Max locked eyes with Emma. "If I were hiding something from you, how would you feel?"
"Everyone has their secrets," Emma murmured softly.
