Capítulo 101: Captain America

The room appeared rudimentary, lacking furnishings and adorned with old-fashioned walls. However, a notable absence caught Max's attention: where once hung photo frames and other decorations now lay empty spaces on the walls.

"At least I'm not dead, and the crossing seems to have been successful," Max mused quietly, observing his surroundings. He found himself lying in bed, covered with a quilt, while three-sided thorns rested on the bedside table nearby.

Judging by these clues, Esme must be safe.

His self-healing abilities were already at work, swiftly tending to his injuries. Yet, uncertainty lingered regarding the nature of this new world.

Max's thoughts were interrupted by approaching footsteps, and the door swung open.

Esme entered the room, dressed in a manner reminiscent of the 1940s, which startled Max slightly.

"Are you awake? How are you feeling?" Esme greeted him with a smile as she approached the bed. "We did it. But you won't believe what kind of world this is."

"Let's start by discussing what happened," Max replied.

"I'm not sure how far apart our worlds are, but for us, it felt like taking a single step," Esme began, recounting their experience. "You passed out as soon as we entered the crossing gate, and so did I. However, thanks to the protection of the silver samurai armor, I glimpsed it before losing consciousness – a light, the other side of the door. The process felt both lengthy and fleeting, as if it happened in a mere moment."

"When I came to, we were lying not far from here. The silver samurai armor remained intact, and I was unharmed. As for you, your condition seemed almost beyond human. I feared the worst, but then I witnessed your remarkable recovery, so I brought you here."

"There was no one around when I arrived."

"How long have I been unconscious?" Max inquired.

"It's been four days since we arrived here," Esme responded.

Only four days?

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his condition during that time, the rapid progress of his recovery hinted at a deeper integration of his self-healing abilities.

Feeling increasingly rejuvenated since waking up, Max anticipated a swift return to full strength.

"Tell me about this world," Max requested.

Esme's smile widened as she obliged, "It's a bit different from our timeline. It's 1945, and World War II is still ongoing. Thankfully, our current location in Alaska is far removed from the frontline. This house likely belonged to someone who fled due to the war's outbreak."

"During World War II?" Max queried.

"Yep," Esme confirmed. "That's the timeframe."

"So, is there someone named Captain America?" Max inquired further.

Esme's expression shifted to one of surprise. "How did you know? One of the reports I caught wind of mentioned Captain America, supposedly a super soldier deployed by the United States, battling on the front lines against Germany. Apart from that, I haven't stumbled upon any information about mutants in this world."

A faint smile tugged at the corners of Max's lips. The presence of Captain America hinted that this might indeed be the universe of the Avengers. Perfect. This was the world he desired most.

"The specifics aren't crucial. What matters is that this world could be conducive to our survival," Max asserted. "Can you reach out to them?"

Esme shook her head slightly. "Their minds seem cut off. Maybe I can attempt to establish contact via the brainwave machine."

Max had anticipated this outcome. "And the items you brought?"

"No issues there."

"Head out, gather some funds, procure all the necessary materials for the brainwave machine, and scout for a suitable nearby location to purchase outright. Once I've recuperated, I'll commence production of the brainwave machine."

"Can you manage that? Even with the production process knowledge, it shouldn't be a simple task," Esme questioned.

Max grinned knowingly. "Ever heard of a fellow named Howard Stark?"

"Howard Stark, the renowned genius scientist, wealthy playboy?" Esme recalled. "You plan to seek his assistance?"

"If the Cerebro fails to establish successful communication, perhaps he can offer some aid."

"After we're successful, wipe his memory," Max added.

"Understood," Esme nodded, refraining from further inquiry.

After exchanging a few more words, as night descended, Max found himself free to move about. Following a quick meal, Max and Esme prepared to retire.

Esme had tidied up their shared space, and after spending several nights together, there was no sense of awkwardness between them.

The following morning, Esme gathered her belongings and headed out.

Max rose from bed and embarked on his morning exercise routine, noting a significant improvement in his physical condition. His body felt rejuvenated, his strength and self-healing abilities noticeably enhanced after their recent ordeal. Even his overall stamina seemed to have received a considerable boost.

With these improvements, he reasoned, he shouldn't succumb to fainting if he were to reopen the gate of crossing.

His clothes had been worn down during the crossing, but with no one around, Max didn't bother covering up as he stepped out of the house.

Alaska, situated at the northwestern tip of the North American continent, shared borders with Canada to the east and was surrounded by the Arctic Ocean, Bering Sea, and the North Pacific. Its rugged terrain boasted numerous mountains, with Mount McKinley standing as the highest peak in North America. While the southeastern and central-southern regions enjoyed a temperate climate, the inland areas experienced more extreme temperatures, ranging from a balmy 26 degrees in summer to a chilling minus 15 degrees in winter. Overall, it was a chilly locale.

Despite the cold, Max found himself relatively comfortable, surmising that he must be in one of the inland areas.

Seated on the front steps of the house, basking in the gentle sunlight, Max contemplated his next steps. Firstly, he needed to establish a connection with another world using the brainwave machine. Secondly, he had to establish a base of operations in this remote region.

Although technically part of the United States, Alaska's geographical isolation, nestled away from the mainland and separated by Canada, made it an ideal location for discreet development. With World War II still raging, discretion was paramount; waiting for global peace was a luxury they couldn't afford.

Secrecy was key.

With land prices relatively low and access to global resources, Max envisioned enclosing the area and constructing a fortified stronghold, leveraging their resources to their fullest potential.
